Raising a Tree Hugger

Mother Earth, from which we come
Combined with the light from Father Sun
Add the elements, from water and air
And the planet becomes a perfect lair

Now we are here, human beings on Earth
Growing from our beginnings at birth
Look around you every day
Help the Earth in every way

As you grow up and become who you are
Don’t forget the power of our Father Star
Look to that which is observable and close
Do not chase that which is elusive as a ghost

Young and old are all the same
Aren’t we called by the name
Homo sapiens, a human indeed
The Earth as our home, plant a seed

I have given much thought to the afterlife, and the unknown. And I have come to a realization that to me, feels profound. Why do we look to what we don’t understand, when we can accomplish so much in the Here and Now? Our children should be taught to be happy and do things which make the Earth a happier place as well. We cannot ever know about worlds beyond, so lets take what we do know and make the most of it.

As Pagans we understand this better than some, but we still search for the supernatural. I suppose this is an innate part of being human, but we should teach our children to do instead of wonder. A certain amount of wonder is essential, but too much can be costly. Let’s take the focus away from that which cannot be explained and look instead toward finding solutions to the different issues we see in our world today.
