Septem (the Latin word meaning seven) was the seventh month of the old Roman calendar, the ninth month of the current Gregorian calendar and the first month of Autumn. Septem is the Latin word meaning "seven", as September was the seventh month of the old Roman calendar.When other months were added to the calendar, the name was modified.

The traditional birthstone or amulet of September is the blue sapphire.

The aster and the morning glory are the month's traditional flowers.

During the month of September, the Great Wheel of the Year is turned to the Autumn Equinox, one of the four Lesser Sabbats celebrated each year by Wiccans and modern Witches throughout the world.
