I've always been curious about the Ouija board, but have never attempted to use one. I suppose I was "afraid" of what it may conjure up. I found your article very informative and interesting. Maybe I'll give the Ouija a try sometime.
I,too, enjoy your writing style. It comes from an obective point of view and is very detailed.

I really liked this piece, i've always been interested in how things came about, especially items that have been around for awhile. That's so cool that the name is "yes-yes", it's like it's already telling you that you will receive the answers you seek.
Can't wait for your next installment!

Wide-spread belief in talking boards as a gateway to inviting evil into one's life started in 1973 w/ the release of the movie "The Exorcist." When young Regan "plays" w/ a Ouija Board she invites the demon in which then possesses her. There had been tales and stories of "strange" things happening for decades before but no one really put 2 and 2 together until 'The Exorcist.'

"Witch Boards," "talking boards" and the trade-marked named, "Ouija" Boards have been around for over a hundred and fifty years. Spiritualists, at the turn of the last century, used these boards as 'parlour games' to entertain the non-believers and to communicate w/ passed loved ones for true believers. Before such boards were "invented" this form of communication was divined thru the use of tea leaves, rolled chicken bones, tarot cards, crystal balls, pendulums and scrying mirrors and bowls. All having the same effect - providing the 'seeker' the answers to the questions they sought about the future, fortune and dead loved ones.

Although harmless by nature, modern "Ouija" Boards are nothing more then pressed board, paper and plastic.... things you might find in your every day brown bagged lunch. But its the psychological realization that may be the cause of the negativity and evil presences that people claim to have experienced while use these "tools."

If you believe strong enough in that something will happen, it just might, thru the power of the mind. So, if you're wanting a ghost of dear dead gramama to come thru your psychic connection just may in fact bring her forward. OR... and one of a number of spirits - good or evil - that may be surrounding you. Remember, evil can only be let in if you invite it. And people playing w/ talking boards, in essence, are inadvertantly inviting evil spirits in.

Im not saying that talking boards are safe... and im not not saying that talking boards are not safe. What i am saying is if you do not know how to channel your feelings and emotions i wouldnt mess around w/ any divination devices. Period.

I love your writing style and your structure flows so well. This in a very informative piece into the origins of the Ouija and the practices that surround it. I feel that is is merely just a toy, and the movement to make out words is just a subconscious reaction to the suggestion of supernatural contact. If there is spirit contact involved in the use of the Ouija then it would be far to dangerous to have on the shelves of any toy store. I look forward to your next piece.
