Who can look at a circle of stones, standing stones, without feeling a sense of awe and amazement, without wondering who made this, why is it here?

Megalithic Portal is an independent website run by prehistoric site enthusiasts. This book was collaboratively put together from people across the globe. For more information, please visit their website.

This is a good sized book, limited to stones within Britain and Ireland. It is chock-full of articles, photos, maps, appropriate quotes.

I love that it describes the different types of standing stones from circles, to dolmen to chambered tombs and beyond.

The chapters are broken down by location, West of England, South, North, Midlands and East, as well as Wales, Scotland and Ireland, covering over 1,000 sites. Each individual site includes a photo and pertinent information.

For Outlander fans, it does include “Craigh Na Dun”, which I was saddened to hear is completely fictional, but is listed as the site of the circle used in filming.

I cannot begin to describe the amount of information included in this book, or the amount of work and love that has gone into it. Thumbing through the pages, looking at the beauty of these stones brings a sense of belong and connection, at least for me.

If one has an interest in Neolithic rock and stone formations within the United Kingdom, this is the book you have been waiting for.
