Book Review

Medicine Wheel Plain & Simple: An Introduction to Native American Astrology
by Deborah Durbin

I had a flashback to the 1980’s when I opened this book. I saw the system familiarized in Sun Bear and Wabun’s The Medicine Wheel: Earth Astrology, complete with correspondences to animal totems, plants, crystal and moon correspondences for each astrological sign. So, this book is “New Age;” don’t pick it up thinking that you will learn find a new (or rather, ancient) system of working with cosmic forces here. And you won’t gain any insight into the cultural astronomy or archeoastronomy of the indigenous people of the Americas – the mythic tales of the stars brought down to Earth and how those energies affect human affairs.

That said, you will have a fun tool for broad astrological divination by the equivalent of your sun sign to play with. Medicine Wheel Plain & Simple offers a different lens for examining personality types, strengths and weaknesses, than the zodiac wheel we are used to. Like Sun Bear and Wabun’s book before it, this book uses a Northern American perspective on a seasonal calendar: winter is cold, summer is hot. The calendar wheel is divided into seasonal quadrants with a “ruling” animal totem for each. The wheel is further divided into 12 signs, like the familiar astrological signs, but ruled by animal totems instead of constellations. So, if like me, you are born between April 20th and May 20th, I am a Beaver, member of the Turtle Clan, born under the Frogs Return moon in the Spring Season rule d by spirit-keeper Wabun – Eagle on the East of the Medicine Wheel. My sign is also associated with blue camas plant, the color blue and the mineral chrysocolla. There are many correspondences to investigate here! Interestingly, the description of a Beaver personality was reminiscent of my Taurus self: “slow, methodical, practical, reserved…easygoing and slow to anger, but once roused, they can have a fierce temper…” My compatibility with other signs is similar to my astrological compatibility – I am married to a Snake (Scorpio)!

Durbin has included a section on finding your personal animal totem. She discusses a shadow totem, one that terrifies you, that tests you and teaches you what you need to overcome. Interestingly, mine is Snake, the opposite of my Beaver totem, containing the qualities that Beaver most lacks. And being married to a Snake, I have learned a lot from our differences. She also includes a short section on working with predictive Medicine Wheel astrology by throwing pebbles or shells, noting where they land, and interpreting the energies and qualities of the quadrant and sign in that section of the wheel.

It’s unfortunate that the book purports to be “An Introduction to Native American Astrology.” There are so many beautiful star myths, tales and creation stories in the traditions of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. And the ancient Mayans had a complex astrological and seasonal calendar. And to imply that all Native American cultures used a homogenous system is stereotyping of the worst sort. Medicine Wheel: Earth Astrology, the book on which this one appears to be based, sourced itself in earth-based cycles rather than representing a specific “Native American” system. Medicine Wheel Plain and Simple is a New Age overlay of North American animal, plant and seasonal symbolism on the common horoscope wheel. But it is fun to play with! If you didn’t come across Sun Bear and Wabun’s book in the 1980’s, this one’s worth a look!

Calendar Review

A Year of Crystal Healing 2019

Learn About the Chakras and Healing Powers of 13 Powerful Crystals

16 Month Calendar

This 16 month calendar (Sept 18-Dec 19) is designed by Phil Buchanan, photographed by Exquisite Crystals and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc. It retails for $14.99 in USA. It is a standard wall calendar size. It features 13 beautiful crystals in full page photographs and explains under each crystal both that crystal’s healing powers and it’s chakra powers.

The crystals featured are a nice mix, and include: clear quartz, fluorite, ajoite, amethyst, aura quartz, amazonite, moonstone, blue sapphire, brandberg quartz (amethyst), aquamarine, smoky quartz, turquoise, and celestite. All the crystals chosen are either clear, blue, green or purple in color. Not sure if this was intentional or not. But worth mentioning. It also has the moon phase dates at the top under each month.

If you enjoy looking at beautiful photos of crystals, and learning a bit about them as well, then this is a very nice calendar for you. The pictures are gorgeous, especially if you like blues, greens & purples, or if that color scheme fits your decor, this will look beautiful on your wall.

I love that is has the moon phases clearly marked right up top under the month for easy reference. I love that it includes a little bit of information each month on the featured crystal. Great for beginners to crystals to learn as they admire the pictures. I personally love that they made this calendar as a crystal enthusiast myself! Crystals are becoming more popular and many are now starting to get interested in them for both their aesthetic value as well as their properties. I love seeing products featuring crystals!

I highly recommend this gorgeous calendar. Bring some crystal magic into your space by hanging this calendar and getting familiar with their essence.

Wood Crystal Grid Review & Interview with Kelly Matthews from Zen and Meow

Wood Crystal Grid Review & Interview with Kelly Matthews from Zen and Meow

Kelly Matthews from Zen and Meow was so kind to send me one of her lovely wood grids made of birch in a pentacle design. It was the twelve inch size and I really enjoy the larger size grids. Lots of room to fit crystals! In her etsy shop there are tons of options for designs and all come in four sizes, 3 in, 6 in, 9 in, and 12 in. ranging in price from $7 to $33. Its great that you can personalize both the design and the size to your liking. The wood is simply top notch quality and the engraving of the design looks stunning.

I actually purchased a grid from Zen and Meow about a year ago. The custom wood engraved astrology chart. You send her your natal chart information and she engraves your chart onto wood. There is also an option to include a report of your natal chart which I also ordered. The price ranges from $22 to $52 depending on size and if you also want a report. I was thrilled with my purchase and very highly recommend it. I keep mine propped up on my altar, but you could grid with it or even hang it on the wall if you’d like. Such a neat idea to personalize your natal chart on a grid!

I highly recommend Zen and Meow wood grids. She also sells small tumbles for gridding available in her shop at a good price. If you are looking for top quality wooden grids check out Zen and Meow!

Kelly was so kind to answer some questions I had. Here are her responses.

Q: How did you get started making and using grids?

Kelly: I opened a metaphysical shop in Gettysburg about 4 yrs ago which really piqued my interest. I look at crystal gridding as another form of magic. Using nature, ritual and intention to manifest what we want.

Q: What are the different styles and materials you make your grids?

Kelly: I have quite a few grids that focus on sacred geometry, I have a line of animal totem grids, chakra related grids, as well as hand drawn mandala grids. I make all of my grids out of Birchwood.

Q: What is your personal favorite grid you offer and why?

Kelly: I really dont have 1 favorite, but my most popular grids tend to be the honey bee, dragonfly, flower of life, chakra grid and most of the sacred geometry grids. I find people are really drawn to sacred geometry, it tends to go hand in hand with gridding.

Q: What do you use gridding for?

Kelly: Mostly as a way to manifest something specific into my life, similar to how I would use an altar. I look at it as magic.

Q: What are some of your favorite crystals to grid with?

Kelly: Once again i really don’t have a favorite. It really depends on what I’m trying to draw into my life. I do use clear quartz on most of them with other stones.

Q: Why is gridding an effective tool to add to one’s daily practice?

Kelly: I believe its as effective as you make it. If you just toss some stones on a grid it’s not going to be as effective as you taking the time to setting an intention, pick out stones that really resonate with your intention, making offerings etc. I practice all sorts of magic so gridding is just one avenue and not always a daily practice for me. I recommend combining it with other forms of magic in order to be as effective as possible.

Q: How long have you worked with grids?

Kelly: For about 4 yrs.

Q: What’s one thing you want to share that I haven’t asked?

Kelly: I make custom wood engraved astrology charts which make great gifts for friends, newborns, and yourself. You can even have one created for a couples wedding date. I make wood cut sacred geometry jewelry out of alder and walnut woods. They are super lightweight and I use sterling silver for all the findings and hooks. I do take custom requests for grids so if there is ever a design you want but I don’t carry just ask.

Cloth Crystal Grid Review & Interview with Nicole Kirchner from Invocations to Gaia

October, 2018

Cloth Crystal Grid Review & Interview with Nicole Kirchner from Invocations to Gaia

Nicole Kirchner from Invocations to Gaia was so kind as to send me one of her handmade cloth grids to try out. I was sent one with the Vegvisir – the Viking Runic Compass which I just adore. (I love all things Viking.) It’s on cotton with black ink and the edges are burnt which gives it an old world aged look which I personally love. Its a nice size, 10 in. X 10 in., perfect for putting on my altar or on a side table.

If you check out the Invocations to Gaia’s etsy shop there is a huge selection of grid patterns you can choose from and Nicole will also take custom orders if u don’t find what you’re looking for. Cloth grids are very low cost, so if you are on a budget this is the way to go. The prices for these cloth grids are between $7 and $9! Its also easy to travel with as you can place it in a book to keep flat until you reach your destination. And It’s very lightweight. I have really been enjoying my cloth grid and I recommend these grids highly! It’s simply beautiful and great quality.

I was lucky enough to have the chance to interview Nicole Kirchner from Invocations to Gaia. Besides Nicole’s etsy shop, she is a Sociology Graduate Student who’s primary research focuses on marginalization and stigmatization of the Pagan Community. Both her work with her etsy shop and her graduate research allow her to support the Pagan Community in many ways.

Here is what Nicole had to say about all things grid related.

Q: How did you get started making and using grids?

Nicole: I have been placing crystals in gridding patterns for a few decades and was gifted my first cloth for gridding about 5 yrs ago. This was in a triple moon pattern. I began making my own cloth grids about 2 yrs ago, when I wanted to use patterns for my gridding and needed an affordable option. A few of my fellow sisters asked for me to make them gridding cloths and thus my gridding cloths were born.

Q: What are the different styles and materials you make your grids?

Nicole: I currently carry the following designs, but I can do other designs as a custom request:

-Celtic Tree of Life

-Moon phases

-Zodiac grid

-Vegvisir-Viking Runic Compass

-Pagan Wheel of the Year

-Pagan Triple Moon

-Reiki Crystal Healing

-Native American Medicine Wheel

-7 Chakras with Lotus Flower

-Celtic Knot

-Sacred Geometry Germ of Life

-Sacred Geometry Seed of Life

-Sacred Geometry Flower of Life

-Kabbalistic-Hebrew Tree of Life

They are all made with 100% cotton fabric for the earth element, usually white, although I can do special orders for different fabric colors. Before I do anything with the cloth, they are misted with a saging spray that I hand make to cleanse the energy of the cloth and add the water element. I create the designs digitally and they are placed on the cloth with fabric transfers. Some of them have hand added color that i do with fabric markers. Once the design is in place I burn the edges of the cloth by hand to add an aged look. This also adds the fire element as the cloth is burned and I blow out the fire. Finally, I charge the piece with Reiki energy as I am a Okuden Level 2 healer, and the whole piece is sealed.

Q: What is your personal favorite grid you offer and why?

Nicole: I actually have 3 favorites. They are the flower of life, the moon phases and the medicine wheel. The sacred healing energies in the flower of life and medicine wheel are very powerful tools to add to a personal crystal grid and can greatly intensify the intentions. The moon phase grid can enable you to specifically tap into the energy of the various phases of the moon to further focus the intention of your grid.

Q: What do you use gridding for?

Nicole: Practically everything…LOL! But seriously, practically everything. If there is any intention, concern, sabbats or whatever that I want to focus more intensely on or bring more energy to, then I set a grid. There are certain grids that are always set up around my house and altar, such as, a healing grid on a chakra cloth in my manifestation room where i do Reiki sessions or a prosperity grid on a flower of life cloth in my home office.

Q: What are some of your favorite crystals to grid with?

Nicole: I always have clear quartz points in my grids. But besides quartz there aren’t any favorites because they ALL are my favorites. Each stone can serve a high purpose and bring the energy you need, it just depends on the intention or purpose of that specific grid. Although, I have to say that labradorite, citrine and smoky quartz make their way into many of my grids.

Q: Why is gridding an effective tool to add to one’s daily practice?

Nicole: First, the process of gridding can be very meditative and cathartic. It is a beautiful way to calm your mind and truly focus your intentions. Second, the added energy of the crystals and the geometric patterns of the grid layout naturally increase the focus of your intentions. If you add a gridding cloth, then you can further intensify this energy.

Q: How long have you worked with grids?

Nicole: As I said earlier, I have been placing crystals in gridding patterns for a few decades, but did not use cloths to guide my gridding or to increase the energy at all. It wasn’t till about 5 yrs ago that I was gifted my first cloth for gridding. The first cloth of purple cotton with a triple moon design, showed me the beauty and energy that a patterned cloth could add.

LED Crystal Grid Review & Interview with Jessica Miller from Cracked Crystal Co.

October, 2018

LED Crystal Grid Review & Interview with Jessica Miller from Cracked Crystal Co.

Jessica Miller from the Cracked Crystal Co. was so sweet as to send me one of her LED light up grids to try out. It measures 11in X 9.5 in X 1 in. It came with 2 different design plates (made of glass). You can interchange them in the wooden holder. It’s so neat to have 2 options! You place the glass grid you are working with into the wooden slots to hold it in place. Then you attach the plugs that come with it and connect to an electric source. It’s easy to put together. Then you set up your grid. When you are ready to add color to your gridding experience, it comes with a remote to control which colors you want to use.

Only thing I would recommend is including instructions for the remote (sometimes I need the extra help lol). After I turned it on it was a gorgeous blue. I wasn’t expecting it to be so bright! It’s visually stunning! Then I changed the colors many times and each color looked cooler than the last! So much fun and really brings a new layer to the gridding process! I love being able to change colors to suit my intentions. I took pictures of the different colors but unfortunately the pics do not do this grid justice.

It doesn’t translate onto the picture. But trust me it is a feast for the eyes! I really am enjoying this grid and look forward to trying different color combinations with different stones. A whole new world of possibilities! This LED light up grid is $85 and comes with 2 glass grids. You can choose which 2 patterns you want.  In the etsy shop there are also wood and lucite grid options as well. I highly recommend this light up grid. It truly is magical!

I had the opportunity to ask Jessica some questions about gridding and here are her responses.

Q: How did you get started using and making grids?

Jessica: I’ve loved crystals for a long time and grown a lot in my spiritual journey throughout the years. Grids helped me better understand my crystals and energy work so of course I wanted to help spread that knowledge.

Q: What are the different styles and materials you make your grids?

Jessica: Currently we offer grids in wood, lucite and glass. We feature several sacred geometry grids and a few homemade patterns.

Q: What is your personal favorite grid you offer and why?

Jessica: I am personally partial to our cut out flower of life grid. It’s delicate and gorgeous to look at. I also so appreciate how different our illuminating grid is. There is something powerful about that color under your crystals!

Q: What do you use gridding for?

Jessica: Stress relief mostly. I find setting up the grids very relaxing. Taking the time to listen to your stones and see how they work together is so rewarding.

Q: What are some of your favorite crystals to grid with?

Jessica: Ok so my absolute favorite combo is amethyst and celestite. Such sweet and loving energy. Like a hug from the universe.

Q: Why is gridding an effective tool to add to one’s daily practice?

Jessica: It’s a time to set aside for yourself and your crystals. Like meditation its important to take that time daily (or as often as you can).

Q: How long have you worked with grids?

Jessica: I began working with grids in 2017, so not very long! Honestly, I used to think they were foolish. What would I get out of gridding that I didn’t get from my stones on their own? Boy am I glad I tried it!

Q: What’s one thing you want to share that I haven’t asked?

Jessica: This practice is there for self-love and improvement. Remember, you are wonderful and your journey is beautiful. May you be well, happy and peaceful.

Q: For my readers to follow/contact you, what are all of your social media links?

Retha’s Crystal Reflections

July, 2018

The Power of Quartz

Ah quartz…my very favorite crystal type. I get excited about every single piece of quartz I own. Hopefully after reading this you will get excited about your quartz too, despite how small or humble your piece, it is a powerful tool! The variations are endless, each piece is unique in its exact formation, it’s colors and it’s inclusions. I wear & work with quartz every single day. I hope you will too after learning more about this treasure!

Quartz is silicon dioxide. It is a mineral that is composed of silicon & oxygen atoms. It has a hardness of 7 on the MOHS hardness scale. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earths continental crust, behind feldspar. Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system. The ideal crystal shape is a 6 sided prism terminating with 6 sided pyramids at each end. In quartz crystals silicon and oxygen atoms are joined in a tetrahedron (4 sided triangular pyramid). Linked in spirals, they can be left or right handed. This structure accounts for quartz piezoelectricity. Pressure on a quartz crystal causes positive and negative charges across it (piezoelectricity). It was discovered that alternating electrical charges cause a piezoelectric crystal to vibrate, the basis for quartz use as oscillators to control radio waves or keep time.

Quartz crystals have many commercial uses in fact. Quartz is used in watches and clocks and in a wristwatch vibrates more than 30,000 times per second! They are also used in computers, microwaves, TV, radios, medicine, credit cards, and industrial tools. In electronics they can change a mechanical force, such as a blow from a hammer, into electrical energy.

Quartz crystals are valued for their beauty. They are often used in jewelry. Clear quartz is often called rock crystal.  The Quartz family includes many many varieties. By color, some are Amethyst (purple), Citrine (yellow), smoky (brown/black), rose (pink) and tangerine quartz (orange).

Beyond these, there are varieties named for their growth patterns or their mineral inclusions/occlusions. An inclusion is a deposit of another mineral within a quartz crystal. It radiates the energy of the mineral, focused and amplified by the quartz surrounding it. Some named for their growth patterns include sceptor quartz, faden quartz, nirvana quartz, elestial quartz, skeletal quartz, and cathedral quartz.

Some examples of ones named for their inclusions are lithium quartz, rutilated quartz, golden healer quartz, hematoid quartz, mosaic quartz, harlequin quartz, shamans dreamstone, and phantom quartz. Phew….just to name some!! Then there are also many types that are named for their location of origin, such as Tibetan quartz, Vera Cruz amethyst, Congo citrine, Lemurians and herkimer diamonds!

Properties of Clear Quartz

These are the properties of clear quartz. Keep in mind even within clear quartz the properties vary depending on the formations and inclusions mentioned above. Since quartz is a magnifier, it will magnify the properties of whatever the other mineral is, whether its within the quartz or growing with the quartz on the matrix. Clear quartz is the most powerful energy amplifier the earth due to its helical spiral crystalline form. It can absorb, store, release, and regulate energy. It raises energy to the absolute best state possible and is an amazing healing crystal because it goes back to your pre disease state. It acts as a soul and body cleanser as it cleanses the organs and the soul and connects the physical 3-D with the mind and soul. It can be used for any condition and is a master healer.

Clear quartz stores info like a natural computer program. You can program quartz to take on the properties of any other crystal, and it acts as that crystal until you deconsecrate it for that purpose. Quartz is the ultimate crystal to keep in your arsenal. While I definitely enjoy having crystals at hand in all varieties, and I appreciate working with every minerals unique energy, if I could only have access to one crystal, it would 100%  be a nice piece of clear quartz. Hands down.

Quartz can also be used to enhance psychic abilities and can attune you to your spiritual purpose. It also aids concentration, and unlocks memories. It helps to harmonize all the chakras in the body too.

Crystal healing is an ancient practice. It is thought that as light reflects off crystals the electromagnetic field of the body (the aura) then absorbs that energy. Then areas of dis-ease can be pinpointed and then healed. If you have a nice clear piece of quartz, you can use it as a scanner, running it down over the body while looking through the quartz to see areas that need healing.

Wearing clear quartz daily is an excellent way to raise your overall vibration, as well as to amplify the other crystal jewelry you are wearing. You can also program your quartz jewelry to support specific intentions or energy streams. Doing this at the new moon is a great practice to incorporate into your routine. Having a lot of clear quartz in your home is an effective way to raise vibrations in your space. Spheres, generators and clusters are great choices. Not to mention they make beautiful additions to any decor. One place I would not recommend putting clear quartz is in the bedroom. Clear quartz can be disruptive to your sleep. Amethyst on the other hand is a great option within the quartz family to place in your sleep space.

It fascinates me that while quartz is widely available on every continent, there are some types that only grow in one place on the entire earth! Such as herkimer diamonds. Isn’t that incredible? I am lucky enough to be going to the Herkimer Diamond Gem Show this month as well as going mining in herkimer, NY while I’m there. Its been on my bucket list for awhile and I’m so excited! I will be writing an article all about my experiences in Herkimer. It will be in September’s column. I hope you will come back and check it out! In the meantime, I hope you learned something new about how truly magical clear quartz is and I hope this inspires you to get your quartz out and work with it!

Crystal of the Month: Lemurians

First, a little background information. Lemuria was an ancient advanced society that pre-dates even Atlantis. It was also known as “Mu”. Lemuria was lost and sank to the bottom of the sea in a natural disaster long long ago. The Lemurians were wise energy workers. Lemuria was a civilization celebrating oneness, unconditional love, cosmic connection, humanity as a whole and healing. It was a matriarchal culture. Toward the end of the lemurian civilization, the physical beings were aware that a great change was coming. They set about to find a way to store their precious, vast knowledge on earth for later discovery. Its believed during the last 300 years or so, they were preparing for a cataclysm. Record storage was downloaded into seed crystals. They were then placed into the earth for later discovery. In these crystals, there are bar code like lines that are said to help you to download these important messages that were laser imprinted by this advanced race of beings. The key is in being able to touch these situations.

Lemurian crystals are clear quartz points that are easily identified by the horizontal line patterns, or striations, that are present on some of the point faces. They resemble bar codes and are sometimes referred to as the “stairway to heaven”. These striations can be seen but more importantly FELT. If its a lemurian seed crystal, it will have the striations on alternating faces, or on 3 of the 6 faces. If its a lemurian, it can vary which faces the striations appear. Striations usually end in a triangular face, forming the apex of the crystal. Some are frosted or matte in appearance, while others are very clear. There are also lemurian root crystals, which grow beneath the seed crystals and are the rarest of the lemurian types available to us. They are covered in sacred markings such as shamans portals and are exceptionally clear.

Lemurians can come in clear, smoky, pink, tangerine, and golden in color. They come in all sizes but should be in a wand shape tapering from a thicker base to a thinner point.

The first mention of Lemurian crystals was in the early 90’s and they were coined in a newsletter by Katrina Raphaell. She claimed that true Lemurians only came from one location, the Diamantina mine in Minas Gervias, Brazil. Others now believe that they can come from multiple places in the world. Hawaii for example is said to have a very strong Lemuria connection. I invite you to research this topic further and decide for yourself which school of thought resonates with you.

Its believed that these crystals will find the right “keeper”, and when that keeper connects with it and starts working with it, the messages of ancient higher wisdom are then downloaded into our subconscious. The information can then be accessed by us when we are ready for their wisdom. I like to ask my new lemurian crystal prior to working with her for the first time, to please bless me with their guidance for my highest good and the highest good of mama Gaia.

Lemurians are excellent tools for many purposes. They are perfect for energy workers, crystal healers, lightworkers and Reiki practitioners. Lemurians are believed to carry care or healing instructions for mother earth, and so of course are master healers for humans as well. They can’t be beat for personal healing tools.

Another use is to use it during meditation. You can put the striations against your third eye, or by running your index finger on your left hand against the lines. They are considered to be a communication tool between us and the cosmos. These crystals are attracted to the people who will aid the planet in these times.

Yet another use is in dreamwork. For greater access and recall to our dream state. Investigating your dreams aids in discovering your souls journey.

You can use Lemurians to form a protective circle by holding the crystal in your right hand and encircling the person, room or location.

Whichever way you choose to work with your lemurian know that the more you work with it the more powerful it will become. I could talk about Lemurians all day, but I hope this overview sparked your interest and you get a lemurian crystal to try!

Thanks for spending time with me this month and I wish you all many crystal blessings!!

XO Retha

Goddess Provisions

Boxes Fit for Goddesses,” is what GoddessProvisions advertise they carry. They would like to “Nourish your inner goddess and grow your spiritual practice.” Sounds interesting to me, now let’s see if they can deliver!

GoddessProvisions.com sells their boxes either monthly or as monthly subscriptions. A monthly box cost $33.00 and if you live within the USA, shipping is free.

My Box Arrives!!

You definitely know when your GoddessProvisions Box has arrived! It is a lovely, purple box with the companies logo on top. It’s website on one side.

As well as, a lovely quote of the boxes intentions covering another

…and other self promoting links cover the rest of the sides.

The bottom has the companies logo and some really cute doodles. The box does draw attention, but not in a witchy way. People will read the word Goddess, but I feel they will think of it more as something for just any woman, or for pampering. In other words, if you are in the broom closet, you are safe with this Box!

First Opening

Upon opening the box you can not help but smile at the cute doodles again! Everything is so neatly placed, you almost hate to disturb it! But I must dig in for the postcard I see poking through at the bottom.

The Postcard

The postcard I pull out is THE MOST professional catalog of inventory and information I have seen come with a subscription box yet. It is gorgeous. Laminated. Brightly colored. Includes every single item in the box. Does not leave out anything!! It shows you a picture of each item with a number next to it. The numbers are then on the back of the card and match to a paragraph about each individual item, explaining: what it is, how its used, it’s monetary value, and even how to get in contact with the creator of the item showing their logos. Completely thorough. I am blown away.

In my excitement about the brilliance of the table of contents, I forgot to mention that this GoddessProvisions Month’s Box theme is Aura Cleanse….”Radiate Light from Within.”

Aura Mist

Kate’s Magic Purification & Protection Aura Mist has a light aroma. It’s not an overpowering scent. Very soothing still. The scents inside are Sandalwood & Lavender, however I do not smell so much lavender. Stays true to the fact that it is a mist, so when it falls on your skin it does not leave a heavy or oily feel on it. More like a lovely cool sensation. They send a nice full sized bottle.

Seaweed Bath Co. Detox Facial Bar

All natural ingredients like seaweed, charcoal, & volcanic ash. This bar of soap is Vegan and cruelty free. It has 65 vitamins and minerals. It’s for gently exfoliating skin while washing away toxins from the environment. It says unscented, but I’m gonna be honest, it has a slight scent. Not an unpleasing one or pleasing one. Just a small scent. It lathered up nicely. Just like any other soap would. Most importantly how did it make my skin feel after washing? Really amazing. You know the tightness you get from a regular soap bar because it is very drying, so it leaves your skin feeling very taut on your face. You get none of that feeling with Seaweed Bath Co.’s Bar, yet you still feel completely fresh & clean. Twenty minutes later my skin still felt soft, clean, yet more moisturized then usual. No oily spots anywhere, either.

Jade Facial Roller

Jade is a wonderful stone of health and healing revered in China. By rolling the Jade Facial Roller over your face your circulation is increased in your skin while promoting lymphatic drainage & releasing toxins. Facial muscles relax and collagen is stimulated, improving elasticity. All the while reducing fine lines, dark circles, & Puffiness.

GoddessProvisions.com provides a website on their postcard that teaches you the proper way to use your new beauty & relaxation tool. Written instructions, a drawing, and a video are provided.

Provided is a beautiful solid jade roller. It looks heavier then it is, but it is by no means flimsy. At first is it cold on the face and a bit hard and shocking. A bit squeaky. The massage it gives your face is lovely. The feeling is relaxing. Only time will tell if it does all it says, but the quality is definitely there.

Munde Fragrance

Pax Apothecary Munde Vibrational Fragrance is the companies own blend of essential oils in a glass, roller ball dispenser bottle. The scents included are bergamot, carrot seed, cedarwood, lavender, lemongrass, and saro. You are to roll this blend onto your pulse points to clear energetic blocks so you can pursue your purpose. Very fragrant. Not my personal choice of smell. A bit pinsesol & lemon drops to me. Maybe to manly for me. But it’s strong, good quality oil. Not a weak blend. The scent lasts a long time. My husband enjoys the scent and tested it and it’s longevity for us.

Rose Detox Tea

Essential Life Detox Tea ingredients include organic ginger, dandelion root, tulsi & lemongrass. This is a loose tea. It has a sweet, earthy flavor. Very delicious taste and I am picky with my herbal teas. It is for purifying your energy field and cleansing your body from the inside out. It leaves you feeling very relaxed after drinking with a nice after taste on your tongue. The packaging gives you instructions for ratio and & steeping.

Decorated Selenite Heart

Fractalista Selenite Heart has a gorgeous design laser-etched onto it. It is very fragile. A great tool for energy workers. Used over your Chakras in times of anxiety, stress, or depression. It absorbs excess emotions and breaks up energy blockages and cleanses your aura.

My Over All Impression…

These definitely are “Boxes Fit for Goddesses.GoddessProvisions.com definitely delivers a box that pampers the Goddess in us all. The products are of amazing quality. Solid, full sizes, working, delicious, beautiful, & lasting. Just about every item comes with a full explanation on it, but if it doesn’t there are no worries because the beautiful postcard GoddessProvisions provides explains it all. Instructions on what it is used for, the name of the company, links to the company, even links to instructional videos on how to use the products. They really cover all angles so there is no confusion on the buyers part. I would definitely recommend purchasing a box from GoddessProvisions. The quality it amazing.

Unfortunately we do not have our usually Q & A with the company, but I thought I would provide a little more on what GoddessProvisions offers.

Retha’s Crystal Reflections

A Beginners Guide to Choosing & Working with Crystal Shapes & Types

Crystals & stones come in so many varieties it can be quite overwhelming at first, this is an overview of how to choose the appropriate type for what you want to use your crystal for. Of course you can get creative and improvise, this is meant to help show you some of the options there are and what it all means. Most important when choosing a crystal to work with is how it makes you feel, touch it and get acquainted if you can. If buying online from a picture, spend a minute looking at the photo and observe how it makes you feel when tuning into it. Intuition can really help guide you to the perfect crystal tool for you. And experiment! That’s the fun of crystals! Your experience will be unique to you…there are no wrong choices.

Spheres:

A sphere is a crystal or stone polished and carved into a sphere shape. They come in endless varieties & sizes. The main reason one would choose a sphere shape in particular, is because spheres radiate energy from all sides and in all directions. They are great for the home or on an altar to raise the energy of your space. If you wanted to bring love into your space, you would want a rose quartz or Rhodochrosite sphere for example. Spheres are also great to hold in your hands during meditation.

Generators:

Generators are flat on the bottom and generally have six polished sides. They come to a point mostly but can have a  flat ridge on top too. They have many uses but my favorite use is in crystal gridding. They are perfect as the center point of the grid. You can use generators to direct energy in a certain direction as well, in the same way you would use a wand, as a generator is basically a wand with a flat bottom that can stand upright. Some like to collect generators and make a generator garden, which is simply a grouping of them. I personally have a big generator garden and I love it. Quartz generators in particular are ideal for use in gridding as quartz is the highest vibration crystal there is.

Obelisks:

Obelisks are very similar to generators but instead of having six polished sides, they have four uniform sides. They resemble a tall pyramid. It has a flat square bottom. These are used for display, or used the same way as generators.

Pyramids:

Exactly as it sounds, its a stone carved & polished into the shape of a pyramid and can be a four sided or three sided pyramid. They could be used in the center of a grid, used on an altar or in a space to bring in Egyptian energy, or simply enjoyed for their beauty. Pyramids are a sacred shape.

Tumbles:

A rock or crystal that’s been polished into a small to medium size, perfect for so many purposes. I like to carry tumbles in a medicine bag or pouch when I leave my house. Much less hard on the shoulders than traveling with palmstones or specimens! (Take my word on that lol)! Tumbles are also great for using in grids, wearing in your bra. They can be placed in bowls in your home, or can be placed in plants, or in a bag in your car, the sky’s the limit! I like to pick out a few tumbles each morning to travel with me throughout my day. I will hold them in my hand as needed. Its a great way to learn a stone a day if you’re new to crystals.

Palmstones/Pillows:

Palmstones are polished stones that are medium to large size that are made to fit into the palm of your hand and are usually an oblong shape. Many prefer to work with them in pairs, holding one in each hand during meditation or crystal healing sessions. Pillows are used the same as palmstones but are round shaped.

Worry stones/Thumb stones:

These are smaller polished stones that have a little thumb imprint or indentation in the middle, perfect for rubbing with your thumb when you are anxious or worried. These are excellent for children or people with anxiety.

Hearts:

Stones carved into a heart shape, perfect for raising love vibrations. Many collect these, including myself.

Eggs:

Stones carved into egg shape. They are appropriate for representing new beginnings, fertility, the cycle of life, and are often seen at Imbolc on altars.

Faceted Meditation Stones:

These are carved and polished crystals with a flat bottom that are perfect for use in Crystal healing and meditations, placing it on the forehead or on chakra points along the body. Also rad for opening yourself up prior to readings or astral travel.

Platonic Solids:

These six shapes are geometric symbols that are visual instruments that can bring our vibrations into harmony with the rhythms of nature. Working with crystals carved into these magical shapes are very powerful, especially when working with them all together. They sell sets of all the platonic solids that come in nice boxes. The platonic solids shapes include: tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, icosohedron,  and dodecahedron.

Points:

Points are the natural, not polished pieces of quartz or other minerals that grow in terminations. They are broken off of clusters or a matrix. Some points have multiple points or terminations. If a point has two points its called a twin, three points a triplet. Points are perfect for gridding and its good to use one for each cardinal direction. Points function as mini wands.

Clusters:

These are a bunch or group of points or terminations on a matrix. Clusters come in all different sizes and shapes. They are stunning display pieces. I like to use clusters for charging jewelry overnight or when I’m not wearing it. Just drape your jewelry on top. You can charge your jewelry with the properties of the cluster its placed on!

Pendulums:

Pendulums are used for divination. Some also wear their Pendulums as necklaces. Pendulums are a crystal that is carved with a downward pointing tip that is suspended from a chain. They come in never ending variations and are quite beautiful. Some collect Pendulums. You can use them to get answers to questions with the use of a pendulum mat or board or by learning how it communicates. They will go left to right, up and down or in a circular clockwise or counterclockwise motion.

Carvings:

Crystals or stones can be carved into almost anything. Some common carvings include animals, deities, skulls, angels, chalices, offering bowls, mortar and pestles, boxes, etc. They are fun to collect.

Polished Massage Wands:

These are stones or crystals that are polished into the shape of a wand to be used for either massage, in meditation or in crystal healing or energy work.

Single-Terminated Wands:

These are natural or cut and polished points/wands that are used in directing energy, in ritual or in crystal healing. They are often used to make homemade wands and glued to the tips of wood or clay wands for use as a ceremonial wand.

Double-Terminated Wands:

These have a point or termination on both ends, and can be natural or cut and polished into this formation. These are required for use in activation of crystal grids. Also the ideal tool for opening ritual circle or a protective circle or bubbling around yourself or a space.

Crystal Jewelry:

One of my favorite ways to work with the properties of crystals is by wearing them! When looking for crystal jewelry, I recommend getting settings that are open in the back, that allow the crystal to have contact with your skin at all times. This will maximize their effect. They also make little metal cage pendants that allow you to put small crystals or tumbles into it and you can change out the stone as often as you like. If on a budget you can try your hand at wire-wrapping your crystals as well. These can be very simple or quite elaborate depending on your personal preference.

If you are wanting to bring in prosperity and abundance for example, you would look for jewelry in citrine, pyrite or jade. And I recommend wearing quartz every day, as it will both keep your personal vibration high and amplify the properties of any other crystals you are wearing or working with. You can also program clear quartz to act “as if” it was any other crystal. This is unique to clear quartz. Just remember to unprogram it when you are finished working with it. I wear clear quartz always and it’s my can’t live without crystal for sure. Its a great place to start if you are new to crystals and its very common, readily available and inexpensive.

I hope this brief overview has helped you to understand the many many different ways you can work with crystals, and how consciously choosing which type or shape of crystal you work with can help to amplify your intentions. Not to mention all the shapes and varieties are beautiful and stunning in a collection or on display!  Have fun and give one of these a try! Follow your intuition and your heart and it will lead you where you are meant to go.

Crystal of the Month

Yellow Apatite – THE Manifestation Crystal!

When I am doing ANY type of manifestation work or my new moon intentions, I ALWAYS work with yellow or golden apatite. I will pair it with another crystal that is appropriate for the work I’m trying to do. If I’m working on alignment for example, I would pair yellow apatite with blue Kyanite!

Yellow apatite has a hardness of 5 on the MOHS hardness scale and is a calcium phosphate mineral. It’s nae is derived from “to deceive” in Greek, because of it’s ability to look like many other crystals, as it can be blue, green, yellow/gold, brown, or colorless. It comes from Brazil, Burma, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, India, Mexico, Greenland, Canada, and the USA, but the largest known deposit is in Kirovsk, Russia.

Yellow Apatite is a solar plexus chakra stone and is one of the purest crystals of the yellow ray. A stone of strength, mental clarity, and of learning, it enhances confidence and charisma, prosperity and manifestation, of course. It carries the energy of the fire element and is an action stone. Use this when you want to birth a new business venture or creative project.

Create, Manifest and Go Get It!!! This is a vital crystal in everyone’s Crystal Toolbox!

I’m so glad you stopped in to read my column and hope you’ll come back next month. Happy Crystal Hunting!

Crystal Blessings! XOXO Retha

Crystal Connections

February, 2018

Amazonite

A member of the Feldspar family, it’s said that Amazonite is the stone of truth. By stimulating the throat chakra, this stone assists in clear communication by aligning your speech to higher ideals. Amazonite inspires confidence, hope and enhances creative “true to self” expression. With its soothing green colors, calmness is what this crystalline structure is all about. This stone also works powerfully through the heart chakra by healing past emotional traumas.

When I worked in the financial industry I would often wear Amazonite jewelry not only because of its abilities described above but also because it’s known to relieve stress and dispel negative energy, and where there’s money, negative energy seems to follow. Thinking back, I remember wearing an Amazonite bead bracelet that I would mindlessly fiddle with when I was dealing with large amounts of money, and calm is exactly what I remember feeling when I did that. Another wonderful aspect that this Feldspar offers is its ability to assist in manifesting. Meditating with Amazonite can help clarify your intentions and affirmations, bringing your souls purpose into alignment.

To be honest, when I first started collecting crystals, Amazonite wasn’t even on my radar. I was so obsessed with the more common crystals, especially the Quartz family, that this subtle but sweet little gem was passed over many times. It may have taken a bit longer than I’d like to admit, but I can say without a doubt that I’m grateful to have this stone included in my crystal healing arsenal.

Book Review – The Good Witch’s Guide: A Modern-Day Wiccapedia of Magical Ingredients and Spells by Shawn Robbins and Charity Bedell

September, 2017

The Good Witch’s Guide: A Modern-Day Wiccapedia of Magical Ingredients and Spells”

by Shawn Robbins and Charity Bedell

Published by Sterling Ethos

Published: 2017

Pages: 305

Rituals, History, aromatherapy, crystals, candle magic, spiritual alchemy, potions, tinctures, herbs and recipes are just some of the topics covered in this hardcover book that’s approximately six inches by six and a half inches. It’s an inch thick and just feels good to hold.

As a “Wiccapedia,” it covers all the topics you need to know, and then offers lists for additional reading and reference materials.

The section on herbal folklore includes information about botanicals for health and healing, and passes along an old but potent charm. The chapter on aromatherapy explains how to use essential oils both for health and in magick, offering dozens of recipes. In presenting crystals, their properties are explained, along with instructions for using them to make waters for balancing chakras, and for relief from everything from asthma to stress.

Practical magick covers spells for mind, body and spirit. There’s a housecleaning incense spell, a healing poppet spell, money spells, and spells for protection and for love. Twenty-three pages focus on candle magic while forty-seven pages are dedicated to teas, tinctures and tonics for health and magick. A chapter offers ways to cook up some magick – literally – with recipes for soup, bread, Yule shortbread cookies, Imbolc cake and more.

The book introduces readers to a variety of tools and topics, helping them make their own magick, and it makes a reliable reference source as well.

Shane Robbins is a psychic and a paranormal researcher whose grandparents immigrated from Russia and Hungary with bottles of botanicals and the knowledge of herbal healing. Her grandmother’s tea cured the polio she contracted from one of Salk’s first vaccines. That changed her life, and set her on a course to teach holistic medicine and healing. Robbins put her research and extensive knowledge into this book.

Charity Bedell has been practicing witchcraft for seventeen years – a journey that began when she was given a copy of Silver Ravenwolf’s “Teen Witch” on her thirteenth birthday. Her witchcraft now is wild and free, incorporating shamanic techniques, prayer, meditation, trance work and offerings to connect to the spirits of the land. Bedell is committed to the Temple of Witchcraft traditions. A lifetime of herbalism and alternative healing practices also stretch back to her youth.

Each woman has written other books before this. Coming together, their aim was to inspire and empower readers, giving them a vast collection of information. The new as well as the seasoned witch will find knowledge of value. My copy has the corners of several pages turned down.
