Crystals For Self Love & Drawing Love Into Your Life

Well its February & we know what that means….love, hearts, chocolates and…..crystals!! Crystals are an amazing tool to use yourself if you are focusing on self love, and great for gifting to loved ones as well. There are crystals for drawing love of all kinds into your life. I feel its important to not get caught up in just relationships & partnerships on Valentine’s day. Not everyone is currently in a relationship, and some are not able to spend the holiday with their partners. None of these people should  be left out. Love is for the self first & foremost so lets celebrate that. And if you are blessed enough to have a partner to celebrate with, then share the love by gifting them a love crystal. Read on to find out my top picks for crystals to bring love of all kinds into your life.

Morganite is a stone that just oozes love in my opinion. Its gentle, soothing and feels like a warm embrace. This is a stone of divine love in fact and therefore vibrates strongly with a beautiful love energy. This stone is a heart and higher heart (thymus) chakra crystal. Its potent for helping romantic partnerships. It helps you to respect both yourself and others. It enhances patience. Its a great crystal for women as it helps them to see and appreciate both their inner beauty and their strength from within. It also helps to connect with divine feminine energies. Morganite assists in connecting with the angelic realm. This crystal holds the vibration of divine love. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Pink Danburite is one of my very favorite crystals. So I may be a bit biased here. Danburite is amazing in so many ways, but pink Danburite has all the properties of Danburite but with a good dose of heart opening added in. Pink Danburite gently, but powerfully, opens the crown chakra and then links and attunes it to the heart chakra. It activates higher consciousness from a heart based perspective. The pink variety of Danburite is a heart chakra and higher heart chakra stone. It increases acceptance of ones self and others. It brings emotional healing and releases fear, grief and anxiety. Brings in the energies of serenity and peace. It resonates with angelic realms and brings harmony from that realm down into your heart….um yes please!  This stone helps the heart to resonate with divine love, which also promotes self-love. We can all use more self-love in my opinion.

Ruby. Say the word and it makes one think of love. And passion. Ruby is a very powerful love stone that opens and activates the heart chakra. It actually protects the loss of heart energy. It helps us to connect to others and helps us to be more emotionally aware. It dissolves any emotional congestion and balances the emotions. Ruby has an intense energy that stimulates loving emotions and passion. It amplifies energy, drive and success. It helps you see and open yourself up to divine love. It makes you see the true nature of love. Ruby helps you to become a vehicle for divine love to flow through to others. Ruby brings bliss and love.

Green apophyllite. I have a real thing for this crystal. When I hold this I immediately feel so comforted and loved. Green apophyllite cleanses and balances the heart chakra. In fact it is said that all one needs to do is be in the presence of this crystal to cleanse and balance your heart. This crystal helps you to connect to mama Gaia. It balances the emotions with gentle, loving energy. Its a very healing stone. It helps you to let go of harbored resentments and heals a jaded hurt heart. It brings clarity to situations and decisions of the heart. Green apophyllite helps you to forgive and to release emotions that no longer serve you. It helps you to reach a meditative state and enhances spiritual growth. It infuses you with spiritual love and light and opens you to beings from the higher realms. Most importantly, this crystal opens your heart to joy and love and enhances your ability to receive all the good things in life; friendship, marriage, children, abundance of all things, and love. Sounds like heaven.

Pink/purple Lepidolite is such a workhorse and should be a staple in everyone’s collection in my view. Usually when you think of Lepidolite, you think of an anxiety or stress relieving stone. It contains lithium in it so it is for sure a great stone for this. But for me it is much more than just that. Before we can invite all the things we seek into our lives, we first need to learn how to cope with and treat our discomforts. We must be healthy mentally and spiritually in order to both love our self and to love others. This stone is your new best friend. This stone opens and releases pain and suffering layer by layer. It helps you overcome emotions that keep you from doing what you want in life. Wow….that is the real deal. That cuts right to the chase doesn’t it? Its our fears and limiting beliefs that hold us back from our hopes and dreams. Start releasing it! What are we holding onto it for? Holding onto a fear becomes a self-fulfillling prophecy. We make the very things we fear come true by sending so much energy to them! Crystals are tools, our allies in becoming more happy and complete beings. I truly believe that. My life has been so enriched by working with crystals, meditating and getting in touch with my heart space. Lepidolite helps you find your emotional center. It balances emotions and mood swings. This stone opens up your heart to love and a nurturing vibration. It helps remove the worries and fears. It dissolves energy blocks in all the chakras, making way for happiness and love to dwell. Calm, tranquility and bliss….yes I’ll take that please!

Rhodochrosite is a stone that really screams heart to me. Its such a gorgeous shade of pink one can’t help but think of love when gazing upon it. And rightly so, this stone encourages you to reach a state of joy, happiness and love. It aids in emotional healing and encourages you to love yourself. It can stimulate your inner child and promote a childlike joy in your life. It can bring forgotten memories to the surface in order for healing to occur. Rhodochrosite is a powerful heart chakra stone. It vibrates to the energy of love. In this case it focuses on the energy of love directed at the self. Its a very active stone that helps you to heal especially if you suffer from low self-esteem. Self-love is what it’s all about friends.

Ahhh rose quartz. Probably the one love stone most people are familiar with above all others. Its easily accessible and inexpensive and therefore the first recommended stone when wanting to draw love into your heart or life. And just because its such a common crystal, that by no means makes it any less powerful or special. Its a perfect stone for someone new to working with crystals and those very experienced alike. Rose quartz is a very high vibration stone. It is a heart chakra and higher heart chakra stone. It’s a stone of unconditional love and infinite peace. It helps you to open your heart so you become receptive to love. It teaches you how to love yourself and encourages self-forgiveness and acceptance. It invokes self-trust and self-worth. Rose quartz is an emotional healer. It draws love to you and supports love in an existing relationship, by restoring harmony and trust. It promotes receptivity to love and beauty of all types. If you need some love, call on Rose quartz.

I hope this sparked some interest in working with some of these love crystals. Whatever type of love you want to attract, I’m sure one of these will be more than up to the task. I hope whether you celebrate Valentine’s day or not that you make bringing more love into your life a priority. And if you do celebrate V-day, crystals are the perfect way to spread the love.

Notes from the Apothecary

February, 2019

Notes from the Apothecary: Cumin

Cumin is a fragrant spice in the apiaceae family, meaning it’s related to carrots, parsley, and the similar looking caraway. We use the seed of the plant in both cooking and magic.

Cumin has been used for thousands of years, and most likely originated near Syria, based on evidence from nearby excavation sites. Cumin was a table spice in Ancient Greece, a tradition which continues today in Morocco. The Romans adopted the use of cumin, and Spanish and Portuguese colonists eventually brought the spice to the Americas, where it is enjoyed in a range of cuisines.

The Kitchen Garden

Cumin is one of those mesmerising flavours that simply doesn’t taste like anything else. When I was first learning about cooking Indian food, I had not realised that cumin was such a commonly used ingredient. Adding it to my store cupboard changed my life. Most curries I cook now have whole cumin seeds fried until they pop and release their smoky, earthy goodness into the hot oil. Every chilli con carne is blessed with my kitchen’s holy triumvirate of cumin, coriander and turmeric, making the house smell simply divine.

Whole seeds and ground cumin are both readily available in grocery stores and supermarkets. I’ve found that the best value way to buy cumin is to visit an Indian or Mexican store or wholesaler, as shops that don’t specialise tend to bump the price up.

The Apothecary

Cumin seeds are used as a natural medicine all over the world. Alleged cumin medical properties include being an anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antispasmodic, carminative, aromatic, digestive, and an emmenagogue. In their book about healthy seeds, Danny Sarmiento writes that cumin helps prevent the harmful effects of stress on the body. That must be why I love a cumin heavy curry on a weekend after a hard week!

Sarmiento also states that cumin can offer relief for asthma sufferers as it may dilate the airways. There’s also some indication that the seeds may be effective for treating diabetes.

The seeds are filled with nutritious vitamins and minerals including iron and manganese, so they’re a great addition to just about anyone’s diet.

The Witch’s Kitchen

Cunningham lists cumin in his encyclopaedia of magical herbs. He states the spice is masculine, associated with Mars and fire, which makes sense when you think of how this spice is often used in hot curries and Mexican food! Heat is definitely linked to cumin. But I also find it earthy, and grounding.

According to Cunningham, the spice is used for protection magic, to ensure fidelity, for exorcism and to prevent theft. Bread baked with cumin seeds won’t be stolen by spirits, so if you follow this superstition, don’t leave cumin-spiced bread out for the fair folk! Cumin can be burnt with frankincense to create a powerful protective incense. Scatter cumin and salt to create a protective boundary. Carry in a pouch at handfastings to drive negative thoughts or energies away from the happy couple. Or add some to the wine later on, for an exciting wedding night!

Home and Hearth

Mix cumin seeds with fine salt. Walk the boundary of your home at Imbolc or the Spring Equinox. Sprinkle the protective mix while you visualise your home as a safe and special place. Imagine the sun’s returning light suffusing your home with a warm, comforting glow. The salt and spice mix will keep negativity at bay, whilst allowing love entry, and encouraging loyalty.

I Never Knew…

There’s an old superstition that you should curse and shout as you sow cumin seeds, to ensure a good crop.

Mojo Bag of the Month

July, 2018

Raising Your Vibration

Your mojo bag for this month is one that will help to raise your vibration! With the many shifts and changes that are coming, we need to raise our vibration to ride out the wave. If we fall below the surface, we will get caught in the undertow!

The first stone shown here is Polychrome Jasper! One of my all-time favorite stones as it is called the “happy energy“ stone and it is said to bring good fortune and a happy outlook on life. All jaspers are protective and nurturing, however, polychrome brings emotional balance, is a stress reliever and increases stamina and the ability to adjust to change. This beautiful stone aids quick thinking, promotes organizational abilities and seeing projects through to completion. It stimulates the imagination and helps to manifest ideas into action. Polychrome Jasper is useful for those starting new business pursuits and it also assists in a tuning to and communicating with animals! Also, it just feels really good to hold! *grins*

Mugglestone is the next stone to the right of the Polychrome in this photo. Mugglestone is a cross between Tiger’s Eye, Hematite and Red Jasper. Mugglestone incorporates the traits of all three of these stones. Together they provide strength, stamina, focused will, physical energy, grounding, balance and confidence. They strengthen first second and third chakras. It is important to keep your balance as you are raising your physical and energetic vibration.

Rutilated Quartz is in this mix because it is a vibrational healer. This type of clear quartz contains fine strands of real gold. It promotes spiritual growth, draws of negative energy, cleanses and energizes the aura, aids astral travel and channeling, facilitates contact with the highest spiritual guidance and protects against psychic attacks. The alleviates dark moods and acts as an antidepressant as it relieves fears, phobias, and anxieties, releasing destructive thoughts and counters self-hatred. Excellent for all chakras!

In the photo, below the Rutilated Quartz, you will see Hematite. An extra boost of hematite helps to manifest light, making the spiritual physical, and the balancing of opposites. Also helps to move through adversity and helps us to see the silver lining behind every dark cloud. Enhances first chakra.

And lastly, Tourminalated Quartz is clear or white quartz with rods of Black Tourmaline shooting through it! As we know, most black stones work well for grounding and protection. Quartz works as an amplifier! So, Tourminalated Quartz helps with purification, recovery and protection from negative influences. It clears out bad vibes and helps to remove blockages. Allows one to receive the full spectrum of light necessary for proper energetic and physical health.  It assists in purifying on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level, so further growth can be undertaken. It “washes“ the aura, clearing energy patterns that have created stagnation. It helps to identify emotional patterns that need to be purified and cleansed. It is excellent for healing and clearing rooms, as well. It can also be used to aid in purifying the physical body after substance-abuse and those are attempting to improve their diet. The stone also resonates with our chakras.

About the Author:

Tala is a healer of multi-cultural decent and influence. Her heritage is a mixture of Celtic, African, Native American and European decent. However, her spiritual journey began when she and her mother were living throughout Mexico. While exploring one of our world’s ‘Sacred Power Spots’, Chichen Itza in the Yucatan, Tala was struck by a bus and was pronounced dead. She was revived when three indigenous Mayan Shamans appeared from the jungle and proceeded to pass her body between them and chant. They brought her to their hidden jungle village on the mountain to recover and heal for three days. When Tala emerged from the jungle on the fourth day, she told her mother’s companion that she had been “given the light of god by the Mayan people”. She was five years old when she experienced this N.D.E. (near death experience). This opened the door to her receiving messages and visitations from spirits to this day.

At age 23, Tala was the recipient of Shaktipat, in person directly from Shri Anandi Ma. This is a transmission of energy/ god force through (in her case) physical touch which awakens the Kundalini. It often sets the person on their true spiritual path. Many who receive Shaktipat become healers and teachers.

Over the years, combined with her continuing formal education, she has maintained a balance between the physical sciences and the metaphysical. She was one of the first 60 people in the U.S. to be sent to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX to be trained by NASA to educate local teachers about the International Space Station in its beginning stages. She became an R.C. Counselor, Peer Counselor, and an Ordained Minister for the Universal Life Church. She is a Certified Holographic Sound Healer and is a Reiki Practitioner. This year she has become an ordained Minister and Reverend of Our Lord & Lady of the Trinacrian Rose Church and has completed her 2 year apprenticeship in the Pachakuti Mesa Cross-cultural Shamanism and is now a Paco-Shaman. She has made her living for the past years as a powerful energy worker/healer of individuals and groups and a master craftsman of ritual, ceremonial and energetic tools. Her dream is to travel the world and continue her formal and spiritual education with scholars, locals and indigenous peoples.

Tala is a Spiritual Practitioner of the Shamanic arts, she studies Ancient Spiritualities from all over the world and she is a Sacred Toolsmith making tools for Shamans, Pagans and Energy Workers. You can find her at ‘A New Page’ at 1060 Newfield St., Middletown, CT

The Power of Quartz

Ah quartz…my very favorite crystal type. I get excited about every single piece of quartz I own. Hopefully after reading this you will get excited about your quartz too, despite how small or humble your piece, it is a powerful tool! The variations are endless, each piece is unique in its exact formation, it’s colors and it’s inclusions. I wear & work with quartz every single day. I hope you will too after learning more about this treasure!

Quartz is silicon dioxide. It is a mineral that is composed of silicon & oxygen atoms. It has a hardness of 7 on the MOHS hardness scale. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earths continental crust, behind feldspar. Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system. The ideal crystal shape is a 6 sided prism terminating with 6 sided pyramids at each end. In quartz crystals silicon and oxygen atoms are joined in a tetrahedron (4 sided triangular pyramid). Linked in spirals, they can be left or right handed. This structure accounts for quartz piezoelectricity. Pressure on a quartz crystal causes positive and negative charges across it (piezoelectricity). It was discovered that alternating electrical charges cause a piezoelectric crystal to vibrate, the basis for quartz use as oscillators to control radio waves or keep time.

Quartz crystals have many commercial uses in fact. Quartz is used in watches and clocks and in a wristwatch vibrates more than 30,000 times per second! They are also used in computers, microwaves, TV, radios, medicine, credit cards, and industrial tools. In electronics they can change a mechanical force, such as a blow from a hammer, into electrical energy.

Quartz crystals are valued for their beauty. They are often used in jewelry. Clear quartz is often called rock crystal.  The Quartz family includes many many varieties. By color, some are Amethyst (purple), Citrine (yellow), smoky (brown/black), rose (pink) and tangerine quartz (orange).

Beyond these, there are varieties named for their growth patterns or their mineral inclusions/occlusions. An inclusion is a deposit of another mineral within a quartz crystal. It radiates the energy of the mineral, focused and amplified by the quartz surrounding it. Some named for their growth patterns include sceptor quartz, faden quartz, nirvana quartz, elestial quartz, skeletal quartz, and cathedral quartz.

Some examples of ones named for their inclusions are lithium quartz, rutilated quartz, golden healer quartz, hematoid quartz, mosaic quartz, harlequin quartz, shamans dreamstone, and phantom quartz. Phew….just to name some!! Then there are also many types that are named for their location of origin, such as Tibetan quartz, Vera Cruz amethyst, Congo citrine, Lemurians and herkimer diamonds!

Properties of Clear Quartz

These are the properties of clear quartz. Keep in mind even within clear quartz the properties vary depending on the formations and inclusions mentioned above. Since quartz is a magnifier, it will magnify the properties of whatever the other mineral is, whether its within the quartz or growing with the quartz on the matrix. Clear quartz is the most powerful energy amplifier the earth due to its helical spiral crystalline form. It can absorb, store, release, and regulate energy. It raises energy to the absolute best state possible and is an amazing healing crystal because it goes back to your pre disease state. It acts as a soul and body cleanser as it cleanses the organs and the soul and connects the physical 3-D with the mind and soul. It can be used for any condition and is a master healer.

Clear quartz stores info like a natural computer program. You can program quartz to take on the properties of any other crystal, and it acts as that crystal until you deconsecrate it for that purpose. Quartz is the ultimate crystal to keep in your arsenal. While I definitely enjoy having crystals at hand in all varieties, and I appreciate working with every minerals unique energy, if I could only have access to one crystal, it would 100%  be a nice piece of clear quartz. Hands down.

Quartz can also be used to enhance psychic abilities and can attune you to your spiritual purpose. It also aids concentration, and unlocks memories. It helps to harmonize all the chakras in the body too.

Crystal healing is an ancient practice. It is thought that as light reflects off crystals the electromagnetic field of the body (the aura) then absorbs that energy. Then areas of dis-ease can be pinpointed and then healed. If you have a nice clear piece of quartz, you can use it as a scanner, running it down over the body while looking through the quartz to see areas that need healing.

Wearing clear quartz daily is an excellent way to raise your overall vibration, as well as to amplify the other crystal jewelry you are wearing. You can also program your quartz jewelry to support specific intentions or energy streams. Doing this at the new moon is a great practice to incorporate into your routine. Having a lot of clear quartz in your home is an effective way to raise vibrations in your space. Spheres, generators and clusters are great choices. Not to mention they make beautiful additions to any decor. One place I would not recommend putting clear quartz is in the bedroom. Clear quartz can be disruptive to your sleep. Amethyst on the other hand is a great option within the quartz family to place in your sleep space.

It fascinates me that while quartz is widely available on every continent, there are some types that only grow in one place on the entire earth! Such as herkimer diamonds. Isn’t that incredible? I am lucky enough to be going to the Herkimer Diamond Gem Show this month as well as going mining in herkimer, NY while I’m there. Its been on my bucket list for awhile and I’m so excited! I will be writing an article all about my experiences in Herkimer. It will be in September’s column. I hope you will come back and check it out! In the meantime, I hope you learned something new about how truly magical clear quartz is and I hope this inspires you to get your quartz out and work with it!

Crystal of the Month: Lemurians

First, a little background information. Lemuria was an ancient advanced society that pre-dates even Atlantis. It was also known as “Mu”. Lemuria was lost and sank to the bottom of the sea in a natural disaster long long ago. The Lemurians were wise energy workers. Lemuria was a civilization celebrating oneness, unconditional love, cosmic connection, humanity as a whole and healing. It was a matriarchal culture. Toward the end of the lemurian civilization, the physical beings were aware that a great change was coming. They set about to find a way to store their precious, vast knowledge on earth for later discovery. Its believed during the last 300 years or so, they were preparing for a cataclysm. Record storage was downloaded into seed crystals. They were then placed into the earth for later discovery. In these crystals, there are bar code like lines that are said to help you to download these important messages that were laser imprinted by this advanced race of beings. The key is in being able to touch these situations.

Lemurian crystals are clear quartz points that are easily identified by the horizontal line patterns, or striations, that are present on some of the point faces. They resemble bar codes and are sometimes referred to as the “stairway to heaven”. These striations can be seen but more importantly FELT. If its a lemurian seed crystal, it will have the striations on alternating faces, or on 3 of the 6 faces. If its a lemurian, it can vary which faces the striations appear. Striations usually end in a triangular face, forming the apex of the crystal. Some are frosted or matte in appearance, while others are very clear. There are also lemurian root crystals, which grow beneath the seed crystals and are the rarest of the lemurian types available to us. They are covered in sacred markings such as shamans portals and are exceptionally clear.

Lemurians can come in clear, smoky, pink, tangerine, and golden in color. They come in all sizes but should be in a wand shape tapering from a thicker base to a thinner point.

The first mention of Lemurian crystals was in the early 90’s and they were coined in a newsletter by Katrina Raphaell. She claimed that true Lemurians only came from one location, the Diamantina mine in Minas Gervias, Brazil. Others now believe that they can come from multiple places in the world. Hawaii for example is said to have a very strong Lemuria connection. I invite you to research this topic further and decide for yourself which school of thought resonates with you.

Its believed that these crystals will find the right “keeper”, and when that keeper connects with it and starts working with it, the messages of ancient higher wisdom are then downloaded into our subconscious. The information can then be accessed by us when we are ready for their wisdom. I like to ask my new lemurian crystal prior to working with her for the first time, to please bless me with their guidance for my highest good and the highest good of mama Gaia.

Lemurians are excellent tools for many purposes. They are perfect for energy workers, crystal healers, lightworkers and Reiki practitioners. Lemurians are believed to carry care or healing instructions for mother earth, and so of course are master healers for humans as well. They can’t be beat for personal healing tools.

Another use is to use it during meditation. You can put the striations against your third eye, or by running your index finger on your left hand against the lines. They are considered to be a communication tool between us and the cosmos. These crystals are attracted to the people who will aid the planet in these times.

Yet another use is in dreamwork. For greater access and recall to our dream state. Investigating your dreams aids in discovering your souls journey.

You can use Lemurians to form a protective circle by holding the crystal in your right hand and encircling the person, room or location.

Whichever way you choose to work with your lemurian know that the more you work with it the more powerful it will become. I could talk about Lemurians all day, but I hope this overview sparked your interest and you get a lemurian crystal to try!

Thanks for spending time with me this month and I wish you all many crystal blessings!!

XO Retha

Septarian

In my opinion this stone is truly fascinating. I have on many occasions gotten lost in the patterns that occur naturally in this mineral. Septarian consists of a combination of Calcite, Aragonite and Limestone along with other minerals depending on the particular stones origins. It’s also known as a Dragon Stone because it’s thought to contain all four elements, but doesn’t it look like a dragon’s egg? Especially when it’s in the form of an egg! It brings to mind what I imagine a dragon’s egg would possibly look like, or at the very least a prehistoric egg of some sort. It really is a striking stone.

It’s said that this stone is millions of years old, made from molten lava melting the perfect combination of minerals to create this earthly gem. With that being said, I was surprised to find that Septarian’s weren’t listed in many of my crystal books. Not that I believe what’s written is always correct, or that its the only way to define a crystals purpose, but it is nice to have a starting point or additional information when you purchase or receive a new crystal. I’m hoping the authors will someday write a revised edition to their books to include this lovely gem.

This stone is said to be used by Shamans for grounding during their journey work. My personal experience with this crystalline structure is when once held, I felt immediately grounded and in sync with the rhythm of the Earth’s energies. On occasion when I have to go to a party or social gathering and I’m feeling a little self conscious or unsure, I will add a Septarian to the stones that I already carry for security and protection. Another reason to carry this crystal is to help boost your self confidence. Whether you’re at a social gathering where many of the attendees are unknown to you, or you’re at school or work and have to speak in front of your peers, this stone will be an asset to help you gain the confidence and conviction to do just that. Septarian’s are really just an all around fantastic stone to have and I hope to add many more to my collection very soon.

Cleansing and Charging

Crystals absorb and hold the energy from their surroundings. Each time you or someone else comes in contact with your crystals they retain some of the energy from that interaction. After each use you should take time to clear away the energy that they’ve taken on as well as recharging to make sure that your minerals intent is restored. This ensures that your crystals are ready to use when needed.

There are a few different ways to cleanse and recharge your crystals and minerals. Below are some of the different techniques that I’ve used.

Smudging – I use white sage and palo santo wood. I will either hold the stones in the smoke or using my feather I will wave the smoke over them.

Full Moon – I normally set them on my window sill during the three day/night cycle of the full moon.

Sun – As with the moon, you can place them on your window sill or in front of a window. Just be aware that some minerals may fade if exposed to the sunlight for extended periods of time.

Water – I’ve only used this a handful of times but you can bathe them in lukewarm water. Make sure that your crystal isn’t water soluble like Selenite!

Earth – You can bury them in soil whether it be in your garden or a potted plant in your home, again I would make sure that the crystals you have aren’t water soluble.

Energy – I’ve also used visual cleansing, while holding the stones or crystals I will ground myself then visualize golden light entering my crown chakra and as it runs its course through my body, I visualize it washing over the crystal as well.

Crystals – Some minerals naturally cleanse so I have a lot of small pieces of hematite just for this purpose. There are also a few crystals that never need to be cleansed or recharged and hematite is one of them.

My preferred method of cleansing and recharging is the Energy method. I really like being touchy feely with my minerals and I feel that having a physical and visual connectedness with them strengthens our bond so to speak. That isn’t to say that it’s the best method, it’s just what works for me. Which method or technique speaks to you? Do you have one that you use or prefer over the others? Or do you do something completely different? If so, let me know I’d love to hear what works or doesn’t work for you.

Creating Sacred Space In Your Home

In my previous article I spoke about creating sacred space in the work place. Since then my boss has had to close her business, so I was left trying to figure out what I was going to do with all of my crystals that were in my work space. I have crystals scattered throughout my home, but I don’t have a dedicated crystal room per se. My twin boys are grown and have moved out, which has left me with two rooms that have remained untouched since they’ve left. That’s when I had an ‘aha’ moment, why not turn one of their rooms into my own personal sacred space?

So I set myself to packing up my sons things (with my sons approval) and cleared the walls of all the posters and tacks (tacks are now my nemesis). After a lot of sweat and I have to admit some tears (so many memories packed into one little room), it has now been transformed.

Sacred1

As a thank you gift my boss gave me the antique dresser that’s pictured, it’s the most beautiful piece of furniture with the perfect amount of space to hold my little pretties. The drawers are filled with tarot decks, incense, books, pretty much any of my magical accoutrements that I didn’t have surface space for.

I turned my sons bed into my reading nook, topped with the softest pillows and my Goddess dolls. The bookcase headboard was also another wonderful addition to hold some of my larger crystals like the 26 lb. cathedral Amethyst my husband bought me for Mother’s Day.

Sacred2

My friend asked me how I decided where each stone was going to go? Honestly I feel as though the stones just go where they want to. I unwrapped them all and laid them out all willy nilly, and seriously thought, where in the world am I going to put all of these? I felt a bit of panic creep in as I imagined that I wouldn’t have the space for all of them in the room, so I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and just let it work out as it should. When I was done I kept looking around to see what I had forgotten but sure enough each stone found a nook and cranny to call home.

I’m still lacking some wall adornments but it’s a space that I can meditate in, drum, pull my daily tarot`s, greet and touch my crystals and really just be. Of course when you create sacred space in your own home it doesn’t have to be as involved as this, just use whatever space you have available, then close your eyes, let the energy of your space surround you and just be.

Pocket Stones

Recently I visited a local crystal shop because I wanted some small crystals just for carrying in my pockets. I knew that I was going to purchase at least three pieces and that one would be a small piece of Black Tourmaline (also known as Schorl) for grounding and protection. I just wasn’t sure what the other two would be. As I walked around I found myself drawn to Dumortierite. This calming blue stone is known to raise spiritual awareness and can act as an amplifier for psychic abilities. For the third stone I chose a teal blue Fluorite for its abilities to ground, protect, clear chakras and it can also assist in organization and enhancing spiritual connections.

Excited to have my pocket stones I headed to the cash register when I was pulled to a tray of Kunzites. These crystals are a lovely soft pink/lavender in color. They are known for their aid in emotional healing and ability to open your heart to Divine Love. I then got the feeling that I needed to be on the search for heart healing stones to help me after the loss of my dad. I have plenty of Rose Quartz so the crystals that I would be purchasing were going to be pieces that I didn’t already have. I started to make my way around the tables, holding my left hand over the multitude of trays containing various crystals and minerals to see if anything pulled at me. I was surprised when Tangerine Quartz was the next to get my attention because it’s not known as a heart healer. It’s commonly known for aiding in passion and sexuality as well as having the ability to assist in creativity. I guess, now that I think about it, dad was always big on me being creative, so maybe it wasn’t such a surprise after all. As I continued on my search for the final stone, a pink Agate found its way to me. Pink Agates aid in healing the heart of old pains and can give you a sense of calmness and security. I now have three stones to carry in each of my front pockets and I can say that I feel a sense of peace for the first time since my dad has left this earthly plane.

I like to carry my stones loose in my pocket so they are easily accessible, but by carrying them like this there is a chance that they will chip with the friction. If this worries you feel free to put them in little pouches like organza bags, or some other tiny pouch. Most metaphysical shops sell them, but if your crafty why not make one? I like the thought of making one because it would be your energy surrounding your crystals. If you’re not crafty don’t worry, just buy a pre-made one and infuse your own energy into it.

I view pocket stones much like worry stones, for me just touching them brings calmness and makes me feel connected and grounded. Rolling then through my fingers takes me almost to a meditative state. You can purchase stones or crystals for their metaphysical properties or choose them for their beauty or even better yet, choose the ones that choose you!

May, 2016

Oh crystals, how I love you so. Where and how do I even begin to describe my connection with them. You know that feeling you get with an animal, when you squeeze them and nuzzle your nose into them, and your whole body just resonates with love? Well that’s me with crystals and minerals, I just have to be a little more careful because rocks aren’t so furry and squishy! Seriously though, when I walk into a crystal shop or mineral and gem show I am like a kid in a candy store. When I find crystals or stones that call to me, I immediately want to hug them. I’m not sure why, other than to say that I feel so much love emanating from them that my first instinct is to hold them close. Being surrounded by crystals is my true happy place, they are what grounds me, as they should since they are from the earth; true gifts from Gaia and I honor them as such.

Crystals and minerals aren’t just beautiful gifts from the earth, no, they’re multifaceted (pun intended). Not only do they bring people joy, these beauties have been used as healing tools for centuries. It wasn’t until I became a Solitary Eclectic Witch that I learned of their metaphysical properties, which only transcended my love for them.

My dad, who was a rock hound in his younger years, is the reason for my connection with these earthy treasures. I can remember combing river beds and asking my dad what to look for. He would just say, “Sis, pick up whatever rock looks pretty to you.” That has always stuck with me, and I’m happy to say that I’ve done exactly that. I love all types of crystals and minerals, from the rough to the highly polished. I will say that other than spending time with my family, nothing makes me smile more than finding a beautiful mineral shining up to me from either a river/creek bed, a sandy beach, a rock and gem show or in my dad’s rock garden.

I have memories of my dad cutting and polishing some of his finds. He also made some beautiful pieces of jewelry for my mom. Even when he wasn’t able to rock hound anymore or to even leave the bed in his later years, he still found ways to buy stones, gems and crystals for me to put to use in my own jewelry creations or to just place in my sacred spaces. I didn’t get into jewelry making until I was in my thirties, but when I did he was my greatest supporter. He’d buy some faceted gems and honored me by asking if I would make my mom something special.

My dad journeyed to Summerland a year ago and there are so many things I miss about our daily interactions. I feel the loss especially when I find a stone or I’ve thought of a jewelry design that I think he’d really love. I often still talk to him as if he were standing next to me and sometimes I think I can hear him laugh, or feel him nod in approval. I will forever be grateful to him for introducing me to these earthy gifts but most of all I’m thankful to have shared that love with him.

Jasper

Relieves stress and insecure feelings.  In medieval Europe red jasper was worn to control bleeding, and green jasper to bring rain.  In modern times amulets of black jasper have been though to ward off lightning.  Yellow for stomach, intestines, liver, spleen areas.  It is earthy and grounding.  Green is fro Respiratory and Heart.  General tissue regeneration, mineral assimilation and general healing.  Darker colors are more grounding and less conductive for healing.  Stimulates the sense of smell.  Promotes stimulation of the immune system.  The placement and effect varies somewhat with the color.  Yellow heart area.  Red is used for bronchial problems, Brown is for grounding, and green for overall healing when worn or held in hands.  The Chakra affected varies with the color.  Stone of the future.  Associated with St. Peter and early Christians.  Said to give the wearer strength and the will to do good.

Jet

Absorbs negativity.  Protects one from being hassled.  The black mineral is a type of coal formed from carbonized wood.  It has been revered as a protector against illness and personal attack by many ancient civilizations, especially those of the European continent.  People were even buried with it to protect them in the afterlife.  It was used for toothaches by the Greeks.  Acts on the 1st Chakra.  Relieves depressions, eliminates fearful thoughts, directs relationships with ones soul and spirit.  When worn it nullifies spells and charms.  When powered heals toothache and headache.
