Protection Stones

This month I think is an appropriate time to discuss protecting yourself, your aura & your space. You can use many tools to remove negative energy from your environment, such as salt, smudge, herbs etc, but my favorite way is with crystal allies of course!

There are tons of crystals we could discuss but for lengths sake we will talk about my top 10 protection stones. They are not in any order, I encourage you to work with or wear as many of these amazing stones as you can!

Smoky Quartz: Smoky quartz is one of my favorite stones for many reasons, but for wearing as a protection amulet it is my go to. I try to wear it every single day. It not only absorbs any negative energy around you, it also transmute that energy. So its such an important tool we have been given by mama Gaia. I recommend smoky quartz for wearing and for placing inside the front entrance to your home. It will absorb any negative energy ickys being brought inside your space from all who enter. It doesn’t need to be a huge specimen, a simple smoky quartz tumble is perfect. It’s also a master healer and when placed on the body will remove toxic energies, neutralize negativity and infuse the body with healing white light. It also relieves painful emotions. I have personally seen how powerful this crystal is and can’t recommend a stone any higher.

Black Tourmaline: Black tourmaline is kinda the big gun of protection stones. It’s very heavy and strong. It removes negative energy within a person or a space.  I prefer black tourmaline buried on the four corners of the property lines, or placed in the four corners of the home. It’s also the perfect stone for protection in your vehicle as it protects from theft. I keep a black tourmaline pendant hanging from my rear view mirror. It cleanses, purifies and transforms dense energy into a lighter vibration. It balances, harmonizes and protects all chakras.  It’s also another great one to wear on your body as jewelry.

Black Tourmaline Rutile: This is simply black tourmaline bars within a quartz matrix. Quartz is the ultimate magnification stone, so this is black tourmaline magnified. Black rutile cleanses and energizes the aura. It draws off negative energies and disease and helps one let go of the past. It also gives protection from the ill thoughts of others. I also love the look of black tourmaline rutile, it’s so neat looking. So this is a favorite in jewelry pieces.

Garnet: Garnet is to me gentle loving protection, and I keep a huge piece of it on my coffee table at all times. It’s to me protection of the emotions and mind. If I’m feeling stressed or on edge this is the stone I turn to for comfort & safety. It’s a talisman of protection and unyielding strength. It increases willpower and resistance to all things negative. It’s a spiritual stone of psychic protection. One of my favorite stones to wear as jewelry.

Black Onyx: Black Onyx is stone that absorbs, transforms and prevents the drain of personal energy. It helps provide emotional and physical strength when support is needed during stressful, confusing or tumultuous times. It’s a good stone for grief. It also protects you from psychic attack and guards the wearer from the evil eye.

Black Kyanite: Black Kyanite is a stone that instantly upon contact clears anything of negative energy. It also never needs to be cleansed. It’s a great stone to keep on hand, if you get a new stone or piece of jewelry you can just touch the black kyanite to it and its clear & ready to go. So simple! I also keep a blade of black kyanite with my tarot & oracle cards. When i pull them out to use them I always place my black kyanite on top for a minute before I shuffle. Black Kyanite clears all energy blockages and imbalances within the chakras. It aligns, grounds and centers. It elevates the level of good vibrations within the energy field. It repairs tears or holes when placed upon the chakra points with its healing energy. Obviously wearing this stone will keep you clean and clear of any unwanted energies as well. Its a spectacular stone!

Aegirine: This is a rarer more expensive stone but well worth the trouble to find. Its claim to fame and what makes this stone unique is its ability to act as a shield that guards the aura, all while assisting the wearer to discover their courage and confidence in refining their power and strength. It’s known as a “guardian harmonizer”. It removes negative cords and energy attachments within the auric field. It also protects from electromagnetic smog.

Obsidian: Obsidian is strongly protective and forms a shield against negativity. It blocks psychic attacks and absorbs negative energy from the environment. It draws out mental stress and tension. It’s a cleaner of psychic smog created in your aura. Obsidian is an auric cleanser. Specifically golden sheen or silver sheen obsidian can be used as a “bar of soap” and run along the entire body making back and forth motions like you are scrubbing away all negativity from your auric field.

Selenite: Selenite is a beautiful, easy to find and inexpensive crystal that u can use to clear other stones, clear a space, open ritual circle or sacred space and clear yourself. It has an angelic feeling to me. Pure white light. It looks like it’s literally glowing sometimes. Selenite resonates at higher frequencies. Used for undoing the effects of negative emotions on one’s mind and body. Placing on the body it removes unwanted or negative energies.  A great beginner stone as well. I love a flat piece of selenite or charging plate that you can place smaller stones or your jewelry on to clear.

Shungite: Shungite is a detoxifier and a cleanser. It kills and devours anything that harms people and then restores what is good. Its been called “miracle stone” and “stone of life”. It has been used for water purification since ancient Rome. It’s also a good stone to protect yourself from harmful EMF’s. I keep a Shungite pyramid in front of my tv for this purpose. It’s also a perfect stone to wear, especially if you are around a lot of different energies in the workplace, such as hospitals and trauma centers. Shungite keeps you from picking up negative and unwanted energy from others and the environment.

I hope this is a useful brief explanation of some helpful crystals to work with for whatever type of protection you are needing. These are all staples in my crystal collection and I can’t imagine doing without them!

On another note, if you are looking to start gridding, or in the market for crystal grids, I encourage you to read my three grid reviews/interviews that are in this months content here on Pagan Pages. Grids for all price points and different materials. Check it out! Thanks for stopping by this month and I hope you will come back next month!

Have a blessed Samhain!

The Seven Archetypal Stones: Their Spiritual Powers and Teachings

As the daughter of a rockhound, and a mineral lover myself, I have quite a few books on crystals. What makes this book special is that it focuses specifically on seven minerals, Obsidian, Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Emerald, Amethyst, Quartz and Diamond. Published by Destiny , and written by Nicholas Pearson, this 293 page book offers an in depth exploration that includes each stones spiritual uses, history, lore, chemical make up and geology.

What is an archetype and how does it pertain to crystals? Pearson explains, “Archetypes serve as the original blueprints, the master molds, the perfected state for any concept. Crystal archetypes are the ideals that the stones themselves represent, either through human application or through an exploration of their structure and composition.” He goes on to explain, “When exploring the crystal archetypes, there are two main varieties. The explicate archetypes are those modeled after historical, evidence based examples of the use of a particular stone from culture to culture. The second variety of crystal archetypes is the implicate archetype. The message of these archetypes must be decoded through the layers of symbolism inherent in artifacts, morphology, composition, and myth.

Each chapter focuses on an individual mineral and offers a set of exercises or meditations that are designed to be simple, practical, effective and are meant to help you expand your work with crystals. Within these chapters is where you will see what sets this book apart from the normal crystal encyclopedia style books that the majority of us have. This is not to say that those books aren’t good because I have plenty of them on my shelves. The Seven Archetypal Stones is a book that explains and explores minerals in an innovative and fascinating way, giving you the tools to directly engage with their crystal energies.

Pearsons’ years of devotion and spiritual connection to these crystalline structures is clearly evident in his writing. Regardless of your level of experience working with stones or crystals this book helps deepen your relationship with them and is most definitely worth the read. I can tell you that I foresee myself re-reading and referring to this book often.

About the author:

He worked for several years at the Gillespie Museum, home to the largest mineral collection in the southern United States. Obsidian

Made of quickly cooled molten lava, Obsidian is a highly protective stone. Cool and glassy to the touch, yet when held I instantly feel shielded as if a protective barrier has formed around me. Mentally, Obsidian can bring clarity and clear any type of spiritual constrictions. Each type of obsidian has it’s own specific attributes in addition to what I mentioned above. Below are just a few pieces from my collection that I wanted to share with you.

Mahogany Obsidian

Believe it or not I actually found this stone at Goodwill. I snatched it right off the shelf and hugged it as if it was a long lost friend. It found its place in my crystal room and like all of the other crystals in there, it gets loved on a daily basis.

Mahogany obsidian puts on a flashy show of swirling reddish brown ribbons throughout the glassy blackness. A grounding and protective stone, it’s known to give strength in times of need and clears negative energy from past wounds. It works well with the root, sacral and solar plexus chakras, helping them to spin correctly and operate freely.

Rainbow Obsidian

I found this spherical beauty in a rock shop on the coast. I walked by the counter when suddenly I saw this flash of light, almost as if the sun was sending a beam of light to highlight this stone just for me. As soon as I purchased it, it found a home in my pocket for months.

Rainbow obsidian boasts smooth and velvety colors. This stone replenishes the heart energy by assisting in recovering from emotional wounds, gently releasing hooks that others have left in the heart. In addition, it encourages optimism, hope, grounding and of course protection.

Silver Sheen Obsidian

crystals3

This little stunner was one of my dads rock hounding finds. I wish I knew where he found it, but I guess that’s not my story to know. All that matters is this pretty piece unveiled itself to me after a rainstorm in my parents rock garden and has been with me ever since.

With rich flashes of gray, Silver Sheen Obsidian enhances meditation and astral projection by helping you maintain the connection between your physical body and your mind. This powerful stone not only grounds protects and deflects negative energies, but it can also improve patience and perseverance.

These beautiful pieces offer so much more than the shortened meanings that I’ve mentioned above. If my metaphysical meanings differ from what you have read that’s perfectly fine. I encourage you to not only read all the resources you can about your crystals or stones, but to also sit and hold them. Allow the stones to speak to you. Meditate with them and listen to what they have to say. By doing this you’ll never go wrong!

Black Obsidian

Obsidian is igneous rock with inclusions from lava erupting and cooling within the earth.  The speed in which it cools prevents crystallization.  There are many different forms of Obsidian.  Sometimes bubbles get trapped and when they get densely packed that can give you gold, rainbow, or silver sheens to the stone.  Clusters of small cristobalite or feldspar can also get trapped in the stone, giving you Snowflake Obsidian.  Apache Tears are the result of wind and water smoothing out the rock.  Mahogany Obsidian is formed with Iron.  Black Obsidian is one of the most commonly worked with forms of Obsidian.

Black Obsidian is grounding and centering.  It represents strength.  This quality of Black Obsidian is why it is difficult to use.  While it is used in protection rituals and can allow you to see the situation or enemy when it is hidden, it does this in a very powerful way.

Black Obsidian is a stone without boundaries or limitations.  It works very fast and with great power.  Its reflective qualities are merciless.  It exposes flaws, weakness, and blockages.  When working with Obsidian nothing is hidden and we are compelled to grow.  Some support is lent during this process, but if you are not ready to deal with the issue at hand the stone can be harsh.

For example, if you are having money problems and work with Black Obsidian, it can bring the bill collectors to your door.  Without dealing with your issues of past spending, you are unable to grow.  In order to move past bad credit you have to take care of the bill collectors.  It lends you gentle support, but you may not be ready for that step.

Negative emotions and unpleasant truths can come rushing to the surface, it can be overwhelming.  Black Obsidian brings you face to face with who you truly are.  It connects you to your shadow side and teaches you now to integrate the two.  Negative energies are magnified so they can be fully experienced.  Use with care and only if you are able to consciously process what you will see and only for the highest good.  It can be difficult to use if you are not prepared to face reality.

Placing it under the pillow can draw out mental stress and tension and calm.  It can also bring up the reason for the stress and the reasons have to be confronted before peace can return.  This property can lead to nightmares.  Sometimes we are afraid of what we need to face.  You can combine with Clear Quartz if Black Obsidian is too powerful.

Black Obsidian is also used for divination.  It is a popular material for scrying.  There is a truth enhancing component to Black Obsidian that brings clarity and clears away confusion.  Black Obsidian is a talking stone, hold a piece over your ear and listen carefully, it is clairaudient.

This stone is also protective, it can block psychic attacks, dissolve emotional blockage, promote compassion, and strength.  Black Obsidian absorbs anger and can regroup scattered energies and protect from evil spirit.  If you are just beginning your work with crystals it would be better to begin working with a more gentle form of Obsidian like Snowflake, Mahogany, or Rainbow Sheen.

Spring Cleaning

During this time of year, the winds are picking up, Marching us along to a more brisk beat as they blow us to and fro.  These winds symbolize more for us than new bothersome allergies and messed up hair.  They are the winds of change, making room for new things to grow into our lives.

New plants are beginning to push their way up through the soil, and new thoughts, people and opportunities are likewise trying to grow their way into our lives.  If we cling to old habits for comfort, we are not making room for new and better  opportunities to come into our realm.  Though an old shoe is  predictable and familiar, it is also not as comfortable as a new and more improved shoe can be.  Also the new shoe may allow us to walk faster down our life path.  As long as we keep such analogies in mind, all  the changes this time of year presents will happen much more smoothly.

A very suitable stone friend for helping in such times of change is Snowflake Obsidian.  This stone is the normal black of obsidian with white flecks in it, thus the name snowflake.  It is often called the stone of change, and helps us to emotionally and mentally adapt to changes.  In this, we see that the change is necessary and likely better for us though it may not seem so right away as we’re being dragged out of our comfort zone by the change that is presented.

Snowflake obsidian teaches us that in an old comfort zone we do not have room to grow.  Snowflakes and opportunities are  both fleeting, and must be tasted while they’re falling toward us, before they melt away.  The gentle grounding of this wonderful stone keeps us centered so that we may think clearly as each change comes with important choices.  If we’re too scattered and ungrounded, any choice can be unclear.  Snowflake obsidian, worn as  jewelry or carried in a pocket and held often, is a wonderful companion when riding the March winds of change.  May your emotional and physical spring cleaning bear much fruit of new opportunity.  As Always Happy Stoning!
