Book Review – Witchbody: A Graphic Novel by Sabrina Scott

Witchbody
A Graphic Novel
By Sabrina Scott
74 pp.

“Can magic teach us how to love?” asks Sabrina Scott partway through their graphic essay, “Witchbody: A Graphic Novel.” As Scott builds up layers of radical environmentalism and transformative animism through the book, the answer crystallizes: yes, magic can teach us how to love, because empathy and experience are the way forward, and magic gives us the tools to learn and practice both. While it is difficult to pin down a single thesis for this essay — perhaps only because the scope of Scott’s topic is so broad — one clear theme is that through the intentional sharing of spaces and bodies, and the experience of other bodies in relationship to our own, we come to know, understand, and love each other. By experiencing pain, grief, loss, and transformation, we learn to recognize and honor these experiences in others, and in the world around us. By seeing ourselves as we truly are, what we share and where we differ with others, we come to be one.

More a poetic essay than a narrative, “Witchbody” is a book which muses about ontology, experience, physicality, and spirituality — and what these things all have to do with each other. Scott’s beautiful ink and watercolor illustrations enrich their words, lending reinforcement to their message through the depiction of interactions between humans and the liminal spaces that guide us between and within our urban and natural environments.

Scott’s magical attitude takes flight as everyday activities are transformed into moments of transcendent beauty, during which awareness and empathy inflame a daily sense of unity with the surrounding world. Man, earth, and animal engage with each other on a daily basis. In these watery, organic panels, bones, phones, ferrets, and flowers all float down the same stream as the self; all inhabit one sphere and collide with each other in the same space, as one body. And in these bodies, and in our shared body, we can suffer pain, illness, and death — and when we deny the truth of our shared body, we truly do damage to each other. At the same time, our sensuality is a gateway to ontological understanding; by having a body and engaging with our own bodies, we can come to understand what it means to have a body, to be a being in the physical, natural world.

But Scott does not praise only sameness or the recognition of shared traits by different bodies; while this is an attractive shortcut, it can also invalidate more experiences than it validates, and ignores a lot. Instead, Scott delves into how the self-as-same and self-as-different juxtaposition propels animistic empathy forward, causing true transformation and understanding through primary experience and communication, rather than analysis, reflection, or judgment. It is in the active compassion for the other that we build the bridge between our own experience as human individuals, and the experience of the others, by extending our own capacity for feeling and our borders past our own skin.

Sabrina Scott’s “Witchbody” is a beautiful book which will appeal to animistic and environmentally-minded witches, artistic witches, and anyone who believes that we are all one. While there is more text here than in a regular graphic novel of the same length due to the dense and complex nature of the content, it’s still an easy afternoon read that will leave you eager to experience how engaging with the natural other can strengthen and sustain our collaborative, shared world.

Remembering to Re-Member

I recently did a tarot reading for myself that resulted in the cards clearly relaying the message of re-membering and reassembling my present gifts to enhance the relationships I currently enjoy. Particularly the relationship I have with the various parts of my SELF.

This process is about the alchemy of strengthening existing relationships and creating new ones that offer opportunities for collaborative and creative sharing.  For most of us it is an easier task to attend to those relationships outside of ourselves. The hardest is facing and biding the space of dialogue between the various parts of our Inner Selves. This inner landscape can be frightening and aversion is the go-to when we should instead be diving in deeply.

This turning within to remember and reassemble those parts of self is the first act of collaborative self-relationship. When we claim our natural state of balance – the place where both our light and shadow natures intertwine and become as one source of strength, we begin the act of memory of our Divine potential. When we gather together those gifts of heart and mind and body and align them with our Soul’s purpose we begin the alchemy of reassembling what had been scattered and separated.

As that inner relationship is tended and nurtured we can begin to expand and extend the joy found in that process to infuse those outer relationships we hold so dear. And, the positive energy that flows from a mutual exchange of life lived in totality brings with it the shared experience and sweetness of grace for all that was freely given and all that was gratefully received.

This time of the year, in particular, offers the space of alignment and memorializing both the ancestors who have passed beyond the veils and the current relationships we have with our beloveds that should be cherished while still part of our corporeal experience. We are familiar with the admonition that in the event of a plane crash, the parent, should place the oxygen mask on them self first and then on the child. The reason being that they can be of no help to the child if passed out on the floor. Use this strategy for your process of gathering all of who and what you are together. Re-member to attend to the synthesis and unification of your self-awareness so that you may better commune with those who surround you.

This month I will use the gifts of the harvest, the chill in the air as the seasons change and the parting of the veils, allowing access to my ancestors to spend time reflecting on those parts of myself that have lain dormant and unloved. I will embrace them as my own and use them to build a stronger foundation upon which I may more generously give to those who live and commune with me. I will infuse all of my being with the memory of deep connection to all of life and the blessed quiet of unnecessary chatter that keeps me from being whole in all of my selves. What will you re-member?

Celebrating Autumn with Norma Clark of Forevrgoddess Boutique

September, 2018

Autumn Smudge Bundle with Gemstones

Hello, I’m Norma with Forevrgoddess Boutique, I wanted to share some info on Smudging herbs, gemstones and smudge rituals.  I don’t know about you, but the first day of September feels magickal, with apples and pumpkins abundantly everywhere.  I think it’s the perfect time to do an Autumn ritual smudging to cleanse home, sacred space or people, to remove negative or stale energy, banish and release emotions, illness, and other energy needing to be removed from home or person, to prepare for the coming of the Autumn Equinox & Samhain. You might have seen a few smudging herb bundles in new age stores, witch shops or online, there are many to choose from.

Smudging has been done in ancient cultures to Native American, in Spanish countries like Mexico, through Central and South America. Some of these herbs are used in smudging rituals by Shamans.  Some of these herbs can also be used in blessings, after ritual cleansings of homes or people. You can perform a blessing within a home  to invite harmony, love, laughter, tranquility, happiness and prosperity, or what ever is needed at the moment. For personal blessings you can do any of these ideas as well.

You can typically find in stores or online: White sage,  Juniper, cedar, Yerba Santa and Palo Santo. Any of these bundles of herbs can be helpful. Combining them with gemstones and crystals is an additional bonus and can help give healing/loving energy to aid with manifesting the properties you need most. I’m going to talk about a few of my  small smudge sets from Forevrgoddess Boutique, what they can do to help cleanse, rebalance and refocus energy to a positive and harmonious environment or how they can be used for personal blessings.

Small Autumn Smudge Blend

Here we have a beautiful mixture of Mexican cinnamon, Cloves, Cedar, Rose, Rosemary and White Sage. Very aromatic smell. Here’s a information on a few herbs we use for our Autumn blend.

White Sage: Can be prefect for magickal workings – protection, banishing/ releasing, seek wisdom through meditations, helps with grief, good health, healing, longevity, and psychic awareness.

Red Roses: Love, respect, beauty, courage, passion, romantic love, blessings, attract, banish, consecrate/bless, devotion, happiness, harmony.

Palo Santo (or Holy wood): from Ecuador forests, Palo Santo – Shaman have used it to clear energy, and positive energy. To reestablish peace, balance enhance focus to meditation, heals people physical and spiritual level.

Cedar: Calming, comforting, purify, protection, healing, harmony, prosperity, abundance, cleansing, helps focus on goals and meditation.

Mexican Cinnamon: Brought from Mexico to USA. – actions, attraction, inner balance, dream work, harmony, healing, attract luck, peace, passion, protection, wishes, consecrate/blessings.

Our Small Smudge Set is portable, you can do a quick smudge ritual anywhere. The Small Smudge Set is in a little tin box (we’ll provide ritual at bottom of this article). You can either burn them together or separately.  If you decide you want it to be stronger then make a bigger flame.  You can  always break the smudge blend into little burnable pieces and use a small abalone shell to burn it in. (We carry various abalone shell in boutique in 2 sizes.) If you wish to get a little smell burn small bit of each, cinnamon, cloves, rose, and rosemary with a bit of sage. The choice is yours.

Autumn Gemstones

We selected these from our Wiccan Magickal Sabbat Mabon and Samhain box sets.  With autumn equinox coming soon, seasons are changing for fall. It’s the time of balance between day and night, before night takes over and brings winter.

Here are the Stones for Autumn:

Citrine: Stone of happiness, positive energy and thought mental clarity, abundance, healing, uplifting.

Carnelian: Motivation, calm emotions, banishes negative emotions, replaces with love.

Smoky Quartz: Dispel negative energy, protection, grounding, transformation, brings calm.

Tiger eye: Stone of wealth, protection, self-confidence, balance, grounding.

When charging or programming your gemstone, keep in mind the goal or desire you wish to bring into your life. Help manifest this desire to life, say a prayer to your deity, angels, or elemental, ask for their support to bless this new path you wish to journey on. Keep them in your pocket, purse or coin purse as a reminder of what healing qualities you wish to be blessed with at the moment.

Autumn Smudge House Blessings Set

House Blessings Manifest Kit

Brightest Blessings, I’m so happy you decided to change a new part in your life, for the coming of Autumn and all her glory. This kit is designed to help you focus you and your home or sacred space to help “manifest” a new beginning and bring in the desires in your life..

How to Set up your Stones..

You will noticed you have 6 gemstones and an Autumn Smudge blend. The Autumn Smudge blend is to cleanse the area and give it a fresh start with positive energy.

Gemstone Selenite: ( Don’t rinse in water or leave in sun) quickly unblocks stagnant energy and removes negative energy. It magnifies the energy of any other gemstone that’s placed upon it. Combine selenite with black tourmaline. It will protect home and clear any negative energy, and help in protection crystal grids. Expands awareness opens psychic abilities.  Brings mental clarity and deep peace. Helps with angelic guidance.

Gemstone: Iron Pyrite ( fools gold): recall beautiful memories, protective stone, attract wealth and prosperity, energy shielding stone, blocks out negative energy, positive stone. Relieves anxiety frustration and boosts self-worth. Great for memory, this stone helps when depressed or deep despair, luck, money, protection, strength, willpower.

Gemstone: Pink Calcite: balance emotions, calming, grounding, spiritual growth, love, Healing, self work, well-being.

Gemstone: Carnelian: career success, grounding, motivation, personal power, helps with creativity, good health, protection, stop – negative energy, stimulates the conscious mind, helps you focus on the present and current needs, helps over come difficult times, manifesting energy to have your desire come to life.

Gemstone: Amethyst: all healing (mind, body, spirit) inner peace, calming one’s mind, a sense of spiritual insight when in a deepen stage of meditations, protective stone, esp, psychic attacks, helps with grief or loss, releases tension, helps over come bad habits tendencies, and calm anxiety attacks.

Cleansing Stones

Cleanse each gemstone with smudging blend burning in shell, to ensure it’s a positive energy to help with your goal you wish to create. It’s to ensure the gemstones, which have passed through so many hands, to get to you at home, are cleaned of other’s energies that might not fit in. Hold stone in hand take shell and pass it over and under stone to encase it with smoke.

Arranging Gemstones

Once stones are cleansed, set up an area where your stones will be seen through the day (altar, mantel, etc..) arrange stones however you wish. I suggest to put selenite in middle and surround other stones around the selenite so the selenite will energize the other stones. Like a mini crystal grid. If you have more stones, flowers, candles feel free to add them, to help further the goal you have in mind.

Going Shamanic Radio

July, 2018

Going Shamanic” is hosted by Jennifer Engracio on P.A.G.E.  Media Project’s blogtalk radio each month. The show focuses on how to integrate shamanism into every day life. Instead of relegating the spiritual aspect of ourselves to Sundays at church or weekend workshops, this show will support listeners in weaving ritual, prayer, magic, alignment with the Spiritworld and the Earth into their lives to enrich their experience of living.

This Month’s Topic: Sister & Brotherhood Circles with Lori’ and Phil Nelson

On this episode, Jen welcomes Lori’ Black Cave Dreamer and Phil Eagle Song, both certified shamanic practitioners.

There is a need in our society for women and men to gather with others of their same sex to share and to learn more about what it means to be a whole man or a whole woman. This show talks about what the differences are between women and men and why Sisterhood and Brotherhood Circles are such an important support for communities on the planet.

Going Shamanic is hosted by Jennifer Engrácio, about how to integrate shamanism into everyday life.

Finding Our True North

April, 2018

“The person we choose to be … automatically creates a dark double
— the person we choose not to be.”
– Thomas Moore in The Care of the Soul

I was the presenter for the Super Blue Blood Moon on Year of Ceremony with Sounds True recently. One of my missions for years has been creating opportunities for the voices and visions of young people to be heard by the world. On the Big Night I was joined by a “surprise co-presenter”: my 13-year old son Brendan, who took the global audience on a journey to a very special place on the The Dark Side of the Moon!

Right now the theme of young people speaking up for themselves and for the world they are going to be Earth Keepers for – long after we older ones leave the planet – is looming very large. I am proud of young people all over the world speaking out against all that is imbalanced or hurting in our world. May we all listen to the wisdom of young voices and bright visions!!

For me personally this winter has truly been a period of sacred Darkness. What I mean by this is that I faced a potentially serious health issue and some dark nights of the soul – in an entirely good way. For me it proved that “the illness IS the soul medicine”, as some authors claim, because the pickings (learnings) have been rich beyond measure.

When the spirits call us, we embark on a spiritual quest. The one thing that is for sure about the journey that unfolds is that there are no end destinations – just the journey. The spirits will always ask us to take the next step (usually “the thing that frightens us most” or  “the thing that forces us to leave the comfort zone”).  Some people call this finding our True North. For me my True North
is literally found in the North.

TRUE NORTH is the North according to the Earth’s axis
as opposed to the Magnetic North (when you use a compass)

My own recent journey has been about owning and recalling many parts of myself that had been pushed away. To find the essence of those things I had to walk “the shadow lands”. I had to own the fact that I cannot discount (for instance) my Roman Catholic upbringing – the saints literally “came marching in”! I had to acknowledge how years of training in core shamanism have only awakened an urge to follow my true (and first) calling: Norse shamanism and the Norse gods. For that reason the focus of my courses is changing: I will continue to teach courses in sacred art and specialist courses (such as shamanic work with children – the Natural Born Shamans material described in my first book – and advanced ancestral healing work), but my main focus will shift to offering courses in Norse shamanism. Courses that reflect the indigenous ancestral path of Northern Europe.

I had the incredible privilege of doing powerful work with two groups in Philadelphia recently. One group came together to study the Anatomy of Soul through the lens of ancient Norse cosmology. They were a dream group and it was a thought-provoking day! I was obviously asked questions about how Norse shamanism is different from core shamanism. Answering those questions it dawned on me that core shamanism presents simplified models for certain things. (One obvious example is the claim that “there is no underworld, only a lower world”. Many of us will know that this is not true: when we move through dark nights of the soul, initiations and periods of dismemberment we make the pilgrimage to the underworld (and the underbelly of our own consciousness). We spend time there – just as the Sumerian goddess Inanna made her Descent to The Great Below!)

In Philadelphia I took my sacred art students through an enactment of this ancient Sumerian myth. You could say that we all participated in a mystery play. It was challenging but it was also eye-opening and life-changing. My own life changes every time I do this work with a committed group!! (And the same thing is true for ancestral healing work, which I taught in London last week, with another dream group: my current Circle of shamanic practitioners).

Another issue that came up in our “Soul” group was the question of black magic and all things dark. Some people translate the word “seidr” as “sorcery”. I do not agree with that translation as I feel the original meaning relates to both the old customs (sed in contemporary Swedish)  and spinning the lines of Destiny (here think of the figure of the V?lva or Völva and the Norns).

I look around me today and it is very clear to me that for all of us to truly and effectively counter the shadows being enacted on the world stage – we can no longer study spiritual material without studying its darker applications and manifestations. Not to practice it, NO!! – But to understand its workings and deepest recesses –  in order top formulate an adequate response to it.

If we do not personally and collectively embrace the need to do this much-needed shadow work, it seems possible that our shadow taking physical manifestations (in corrupt politicians, greedy corporations, terrorists and so forth) will decide the future of The Human Family on Earth. That cannot be right –  let’s wake up, step into our power and dream (co-create) a different outcome together!!

I said to my shamanic practitioner students in London last week: I am not really a “Love and Light teacher”, I teach from a place of profound willingness to find the treasure in darkness: the dark time of the year, my personal darkness, our collective darkness. That is where the treasure is hidden.

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light,
but by making the darkness conscious.”
– C. G. Jung

In Norse shamanism the forces of Chaos are often linked to the Giants. The god Thor is always busy in the East fighting the Giants and keeping them at bay. Yet the ancient texts also inform us that the giants walked the Earth long before human beings did. That makes them our ancestors, especially the primordial giant Ymir from whose body our world was created!

For more information I invite you to watch my brand  new art video,

Ymir and Orion, First Ancestor, First Shaman

My own allies are urging me to drop ever deeper into my connection to the goddess Skaði – The Winter Goddess – and her (our!) giant lineage. They have also asked me to state publicly where my spiritual home is and from what place within myself I teach. Just so people who believe that all we need is “love and light” will not choose me for their teacher. This article meets their request.

May you too find your True North!

The Bad Witch’s Guide

October, 2017

Bad Witch’s Guide to Pinterest

I am a bad witch. There are a long list of reasons why I am a bad witch. Having been out of the broom closet for some considerable number of years I would on occasion get asked “but you’re a good witch though?” My response to that depending on the person asking but I found I started to say “yes, a very, very good witch” rather darkly as it usually got the point across.

It might surprise you to find out I like Pinterest. However my major problem with it is the “magick” and spellcraft on there is often utter twaddle. I like collecting (rather nerdy) art, food and crafting ideas, positive quotes to get me through those grey damp days. Magickally though it’s often pretty but not effective. If you’re going to write a chant, and enchantment (to be sung or spoken aloud, which is what enchant means) it has to have a good tone and rhythm to it. It has to be a jingle, an ear-worm, something that has the power and dynamism to buzz around your skull and out into the universe.

(Primitive Altar from Pinterest.)

I grew up in with ugly but effective magick. Really on the farm that was the sort of aesthetic. If it worked it didn’t matter what it looked like (but odds are it would look dangerous and sort of a mess). My first cauldron was an empty white animal feed bucket. My wand a stick. The things I made look crude but worked. The woven herbs and grasses had a grace but I’m not sure they’d pass the Pinterest standard. Maybe with the right filter.

(Hanging Herbs on Pinterest.)

Of course it is gorgeous to make pagan artworks, pagan aesthetics and so on. From crystal mandalas to circles of herbs and flowers, I’m just not sure my practical witch brain is wired to wasting so much time energy and supplies on one thing. Some of these images are glorious but you’d need a bail of lavender! I have a lot of herbs, I don’t have them in that kind of quantity. I also have a dog, child and husband and odds are taking up a whole room in our tiny house, on the floor or otherwise would not end well. Wonderful for a photo, not practical witchin’. I don’t hang my herbs up for how they “look” (I don’t even have a drying rack or anything it’s just a series of make-shift jute clotheslines and bundles) I hang them so they don’t rot so I can use them when they are out of season.

(White Dress Women in Forest from Pinterest.)

Again wearing a lot of interesting make-up and standing in a thin white dress in some moody woods looks awesome, you’ll catch your death if you try it though! Outside witch work requires sturdy hiking boots, sunscreen and good thick coat.

My point is that this sort of aesthetic over function exclude those who don’t or can’t match how these things look. Don’t have a bail of lavender, can’t do magick! Not thin, white and gorgeous? Can’t do magick! Not got five tons of crystals? Can’t do magick! All of which is the reverse of the truth.

Magick is in the ordinary. In the ugly. In the old and odd and hairy. It’s in the bones, the cherry stones, the dirt, and clay and mud. It’s in the scars, the dance, the feeling of it. There is power in the beautiful but that is not the only place there is power.

The utter twaddle on Pinterest in terms of spellwork and chants is so poor as to make me physically wince on occasion (and don’t get me started on some of the utter rubbish that passes for “sigils”). It shows a lack of understanding of the basic mechanises of spellcraft. It’s either over wordy, or not specific, or drawing from all kinds of places I would NOT mix together and calling on things in ways that are dodgy at best, and wildly unsafe in others. A spell tends to work best when it’s short, sharp and pithy.

A “get well soon” card is a healing foci. More specific ones like:
Root, shoot, bud, flower. Grant me now your healing power. Heal________.
You can easier charm this over a bunch of flowers, or even a healing soup. Not pretty (or might be) but effective. Of course having a root, a shoot, a bud and flower added to what you are chanting over helps and for the love of tea, please don’t do it “in your head”. Enchanting mean to sing, to sing into being. It is a powerful and amazing magick that might be odd to do on the bus works wonders almost anywhere else.

(A Large Pinch of Salt!)

While free resources can be amazing take what you find on Pinterest with a large pinch of salt. Do your own research, preferably offline and turn off your phone. A lot of the “healing” spells I looked at were binding spells and not very “healing” at all. While I am not “anti” left-hand work, left-hand (or darker) is what it is. Read between the lines, and look at things like a witch. Look at what is missing, what is not said. Oh the sigils are just completely made up, which is not to say they won’t work they are just not based on any ancient system I’ve seen and seem to based more on the Mortal Instruments book series instead.

Make a mess with your magick. Hexperiement, with what works for you and it doesn’t have to be pretty. Make a mess. It’s how it feels that matters, not how many likes it gets!

Finding the Pagan Way

May, 2015

This month, I want to talk about healing, drumming, and an amazing personal experience that involves both activities. Tina and I have been drumming for several years now, travelling to venues around Lincolnshire and demonstrating Shamanic Drumming.

Many people have reported good effects and inner experiences which have helped them in their lives. I saw Tina trance many times and manifest her guide, Nicholas Black Elk.

I even had an hour long training session with him at Cleethorpes beach in Lincolnshire,- when He/Tina demonstrated many variations of the basic shamanic beat and left me exhausted from trying to keep up!

When I started writing these articles, it was with the foolish notion that there were few surprises left in store for me. I have always wanted to write, but I have never maintained the effort for long enough to accomplish much until a few years ago. I started to showcase my poetry online because I was impelled to do so by Spirit, and I had thought no further about my writing than that.

Then, as I have mentioned in an earlier article , I was cajoled into contacting Bill Oliver ( boysoblue.com) by a well known local medium, Eileen Akrill. From the Muse was born, and shortly afterwards, we had the artwork and manuscript ready for our first book, “The Faery Realms” (soon to be released) by Galde Press.

Almost two years ago, I had some terrifying news. After months of arguments and insistence by Tina, I went to the doctor to get treatment for a cough that would not clear.

I was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

I was not long married, and had I realised in time that I was so ill, I would have cancelled our ritual of handfasting. As it was, Tina was amazing, as always, so I swallowed my dread of the future and I pressed on.

I realised that I could not work for too many more years as a welder and metal fabricator and I put much more effort into my writing.

In the past year, Bill and I revamped the Faery Realms and collected enough material for several other books. We are waiting on the publication of the “Faery Realms” before deciding how to proceed with them. I was anxious to write as much as possible while my health was still good.

About one month ago, I received a phone call from the doctor’s that left me in a state of shock. However, my story starts a little further back in time….

Faery Healing

Sparkling lights that fly and flicker in the corners of your eyes.

Clouds of butterflies that rise in multi coloured clouds into a pale blue sky.

Shivers softly spread across a cloud of daisies on a sunny day.

Blossoms blow like warm pink snow and decorate the hedgerows,-

That the faeries blessed to bring the little creatures rest,

So many years ago.

Can’t you hear them laughing in the wind?

Chattering with the magpies and engaged in huddled whispers with the trees.

Listen to the happy songs of faeries singing in the breeze.

Watch them flitting by, as laughingly they chase the last of winters leaves.

Let their laughter chase away your troubles,

As they fill your heart with ease.

When the warmer days allow,

Stretch out on the leafy ground beneath a shady bough.

Feel the winter darkness drain into the soft and yielding earth.

Let the fairies fill your heart with joy, and all the sadness of the winter fly,

Let the pains and strains of life just gently flow away.

Let your world begin again , and start afresh, a brand new day.

An amazing experience

About eight weeks ago we were having a small drumming circle at a friends house. Most people there had been members of the “Spirit of the Drum” group since its creation. We also had a friend of our hosts who had previously trained with a shaman and who had just joined our group after attending several of our Open Drumming Circles. After we have raised the energy with drumming, we usually take turns to sit in the centre and receive healing from the group.

I do not often volunteer, but on this particular night I did. Our new member said that he would take the healing and I sat in the centre and closed my eyes. Often, people have visions and journeys during the healing, but although I was not in a normal state of consciousness, I was very aware of everything happening in the room.

I was surprised to hear strange voices around me. I was convinced that I had an aboriginal gentleman chanting and dancing in a circle around me. I saw a creature appear in front of me, which I later realised was a bush baby. Then someone I took to be a South American witchdoctor or shaman ( by the sound of their voice) started to pull something from my lungs. I was very curious at this stage, as only Tina and my doctor knew of my illness. When I eventually opened my eyes.. Our new member looked like a completely different person for a moment. Then I slowly came back to normal awareness.

About three days later, I realised that I had not been coughing or wheezing since the healing. I had a strong feeling that I had to stop smoking. It was like a quiet voice in my head telling me that I had a good reason to stop. So I did. It took several weeks to arrange an appointment and have my breathing checked. My initial results came back normal, and I asked if I could stop taking the respirator. I was told I had to keep taking it as my condition is incurable.

Then a week later, the doctor’s office phoned to tell me to stop taking the medication as, having examined all the results,- it seems that I do not appear to have the disease. They recommended that I pick up another type of inhaler as a standby, in case I ever had a relapse. But, told me to stop taking any treatment.

The reality of having more time to live a full life has slowly dawned on me over this past month.

I had not realised how much the shadow of sickness, and a slow death, had preyed on my mind.

Spirit of the Drum will be making even more vigorous efforts to spread our message of spirituality without dogma. As the years go on, we will make every effort to share our experiences of the power of the drum for healing and enlightenment.

Of this, I am very certain….

Sleeping Hearts.

In the misty forests from our memories and dreams,

The lives of ancient ages are relived, as worry fades away.

The balance that we lost so long ago is once again returned.

Our sleeping hearts are healed to help us face the coming day.

Stay a while and let your spirit play among the joyful Fae.

Running barefoot through the ever-morning mist.

Who could ever love this daylight world where greed holds away,

Once we have but tasted, just a single faery kiss.

Let us watch the sun arise once more, above the mystic western shore.

Tinkling laughter in the shelter of the trees, and fragrant blossoms scent the breeze,

Jewelled webs adorn the daisy chains as sunlight sparkles on the fields.

Our child-like eyes absorb the beauty all around, and all the peace this faery land can yield.

Rest a little while as tiny angels dance in joyful circles in the rising light.

Let their music fill your heart and fill your soul with healing light.

Join in with the dance and let your body glow with pure delight.

Hand in hand we spin and spin, and weave the faery spell to heal all wrongs,

For here among the gentle Fae, is truly where our sleeping heart belongs.

Musings of a Hereditary Witch

December, 2014

Winter Magic
I write this article for a street person name Dale, who I now believe was a muse in disguise. He showed up recently at the bottom of my off ramp and in the 8 years I have been taking this off ramp for home, I have never seen a street person here. He was tall and lanky with one foot bandaged, but I felt he was more than he seemed (you know that knowingness, that intuition that guides us). I gave him a couple of dollars, he smiled and said thank you. I drove on, but something nagged at the back of my mind.

The next day, I gave him a couple more dollars and I asked him his name. Dale he said and asked me for mine. We I got home the article below poured from me. I wanted to thank Dale for his inspiration, but he wasn’t there the next day or the next. On the 3rd day as I was approaching my off ramp, it dawned on me that Dale’s purpose was to be the muse for this article. I haven’t seen him again. So without further preamble…

Like the Witches of old, we have a duty to help our communities, especially during the cold harsh winter months. Where I live, there are 4,000 street people in a population of 65,695. This has become a growing concern in our country. With continuous budget cuts we do not have enough shelters or programs to help these people. Of course, to be honest, not all of them want to be helped. So, it comes down to us, the witches, doing what we can where we can for our communities.

I’m sure some of you give to the Food Banks, donate a toy for Toys for Tots or volunteer at a soup kitchen. These are all great causes, but I’m talking about something a little different, a little more personal and any of these would make great coven projects.

The Thrift Store:
Go to your local thrift store and pick up a blanket, a scarf & hat (you could knit/crochet one from left over yarns), a coat, or some warm socks. Better yet, go through your closet, see what you already have. Take the item home and make sure it is physically clean. Next, take the item to your altar and cleans by smudging or some other such act. Light some candles and incense and visualize what this piece of clothing would mean to someone in need. You might weave spells of protection, good health or positive energies into the item or stitch a symbol into the hem. Give it a final blessing of Hope. Now, put it in your car, so that when intuition tells you, you can offer it to someone on the street in need.

Food:
Street people need food that has a long shelf life and doesn’t need refrigeration. Peanut butter, honey, canned meat (with pop tops or you’ll have to provide a can opener – Dollar Store), crackers, bottled water, granola bars, cookies (for something sweet), a loaf of bread (not a long shelf life, but goes good with some of the longer shelf life items), some plastic utensils. All of these things can be empowered with the magic of the sweetness of life, good health, abundance, protection, use your witchy imagination. You can do a lot – fill up a reusable grocery bag, or a little like a jar of peanut butter, crackers and a plastic knife.
Don’t forget dried kibble for the pets, for some of these people their pets are the only family they have.

Little Necessities:
The Dollar Store is great for this: razors, toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, deodorant, shampoo, first aid kit, and whatever else you think a person might need to be reminded that they are still a person and that someone, even if a strange, even for a moment, cares enough to think of them. The items can be placed in a zipper bag and kept in the car until needed. Again, everything should be done with magical intent.

You can give a little or give a lot depending on your comfort. If you are unable to help with food or clothing, light a candle and project healing and protection for these people that they may make it through the winter safely.

One act of kindness can return many times over.

Blessings of a Healthy and Safe Winter to All
