Book Review: The Witch’s Altar The Craft, Lore and Magick of Sacred Space By Laura Tempest Zackroff and Jason Mankey

December, 2018

Book Review:

The Witch’s Altar

The Craft, Lore and Magick of Sacred Space

By Laura Tempest Zackroff and Jason Mankey

As someone with many altars strewn about my home, I was happy to have the opportunity to read this book.

Whether for a beginner or someone with many year’s experience with Wicca/Witchcraft/Paganism, this book will help you in setting up, designing and maintaining your altars.

Just perusing the Table of Contents makes you aware that the two authors know exactly what they are talking about, as they have many years of wisdom and knowledge both individually and collectively.

It is a very reader-friendly book, conversational and easy-to-read with much information packed between its covers.

The book starts by relating different kinds of altars, i.e. shrines, temples, sanctuaries, etc., with descriptions for each.

The history of altars is here beginning with those first caves and stones, what they contain(ed) and how altars became one of the magical tools most relied upon.

All of the details are present from what an altar is, what it is for and how to build one. Since there are various reasons to build one, the authors discuss the specifics, such as what activity you will be using it for, such as devotion, ritual, spell-work. This includes tips on deciding where to build it, keeping in mind what you are looking to do.

Specific altars are always reviewed, such as, daily and seasonal altars, as well as outdoor altars and devotional altar dedicated to specific diety(ies).

One of the things I liked most about this book was how each author readily shared personal experiences with the reader.

Of specific interest was the section regarding altars for the dead and ancestral altars, something I have not read much about in other books. The information was fascinating and propelled me to make my own ancestral altar.

For those of you who travel, locally and abroad, there is a section on travel altars, whether to set up at a hotel, or to have with you on a daily basis in your own personal vehicle. This includes digital altars, a concept I would never have even considered.

Some of the topics had me thinking “oh, yes, I had not thought of that”, such as dealing with our animal companions climbing all over our altars, other people who feel the need to touch, and how to dispose of altar items that are no longer needed/wanted.

This highly informative book is also interspersed with recipes both magickal and mundane, include spellwork, prayers, chants, blessings.

At the end of each chapter is a section called “Altar-natives”, which features witchy friends of the authors adding their wisdom; in fact, giving us ideas from numerous people. A nice touch.

Allowing for the disclaimer that I personally know Tempest, I would like to say that I highly recommend this book – friendly, informative, enjoyable.

Interview with Author Ceri Norman: Faeries, Stones & Hope

Ceri Norman: Faeries, Stones & Hope

I was really drawn to Ceri Norman’s book on stones and their connection to magical beings, and you can read my review here. Ceri is a prolific writer on a number of fascinating subjects and makes beautiful nature inspired jewellery which she sells on Etsy. Despite being so busy, Ceri was kind enough to give up some of her time to speak to us here at PaganPagesOrg! Here’s what she had to say when I caught up with her this month.

Mabh Savage (MS): When did you first start writing and what drew you to it?

Ceri Norman (CN): I honestly cannot recall a time before I was writing, so I guess it started out with little articles, stories and bizarre recipes (for potions and lotions) as a small child and just carried on from there. I have always loved the magic and power of the written word, and the beauty of the many different forms of writing, that allow us communicate our ideas with each other.

MS: What inspires you most as a writer?

CN: Myths, legends and folklore, so I owe a great deal to the old stories and to those who created or recorded them.

MS: Do you prefer writing fiction or non-fiction, and why?

CN: Non-fiction. I am an obsessive writer; once I start writing I feel a strong compulsion to get the ‘section’ or ‘piece’ finished as soon as possible. With a non-fiction this can usually mean the article or chapter and I can take a breather but with a full fiction novel it means the entire book, which takes me months to write, and that can drive me (and those around me) a little nuts.

MS: What made you decide to write Faerie Stones?

CN: I have always loved stones and Faeries and there are many links between the two, yet wherever I looked there was not a coherent book or article that brought the wealth of information in so many different sources together for the readers. Once I realised that I kept feeling a strong sense from the Faeries to fill that gap for readers and to create something that would enable people to bring crystals into their work with Faerie and to bring Faerie into their work with crystals.

MS: Who would you say the book is aimed at?

CN: Anyone who is interested in crystals, Faeries, folklore, myths and legends.

MS: Do you have a favourite stone or one that resonates strongly with you?

CN: Though not technically a stone, I would have to say Amber. I love its cleansing, bright energy, which is an antidote to my sombre, serious personality. It has so much folklore, especially regarding its healing properties, attached to it and has been so beloved by so many cultures all over the planet. For resin to become Amber it has to endure, to endure being buried/submerged, to endure pressure and to endure the passage of time. I find that a valuable and inspiring lesson in life, that Amber can still be so beautiful, positive and magical even after all that it has been forced to endure.

MS: When did you begin working with stones and their energies and associated beings?

CN: Again, I cannot recall a time before I worked with stones. When I was a child my mother had a beautiful piece of Blue John from Derbyshire on display in our home and I would regularly sneak it out of the display case to work with it and learn from it. I began collecting stones and crystals very early on, from semi-precious stones right down to interesting stones from the garden, which all had their own energies and personalities.

MS: What was the most challenging thing about the writing process for this book?

CN: Some of the research proved challenging. Many modern books on crystals say ‘x is good for y’ and that has become accepted fact regurgitated over and over again, yet I wanted to go deeper and to older sources to really look at the older as well as more modern Faerielore and Folklore associated with stones. Sometimes finding those older sources and information proved a real challenge, but it was extremely rewarding.

MS: And what did you enjoy the most?

CN: It was utterly enchanting to work with the Faeries and the stones to create the book for readers. That magic will stay with me for a very long time.

MS: The book covers 26 fascinating stones plus a wide variety of quartz formations. Would you expand upon this at any point and perhaps do a second volume?

CN: If there was sufficient interest from readers, there is plenty of room to do another volume. There are many more stones out there to write about, from the very precious gems such as diamonds and rubies right down to the sandstone and slate that make up Mother Earth’s wonderful landscapes.

MS: What’s your top tip for anyone just starting to appreciate the magic of stones or crystals?

CN: Enjoy it and do what you need to in order to keep the magic alive! Celebrate that wonderful sense of awe, inspiration and enchantment that comes from working with Faeries and stones. Never let anyone else deter you or disenchant you. Remember it is a two-way relationship. Give back to the stones and Faeries to really forge a strong working relationship, so keep your stones happy by looking after them and do those little chores that the Faeries ask you to do for them.

MS: What other writing projects do you have on the horizon? Are you working on any more books?

CN: I am currently focusing more on articles for several publications, including FAE Magazine and am attempting (intermittently) to blog
(https://wysewitchuk.blogspot.com/) and to do the odd little video for YouTube.

MS: How do you relax or take a break from writing and researching?

CN: I love to get out into nature, to take walks along the beach or in the woods to remind myself that I am a part of nature and to reconnect with the energies of Mother Nature and the Faeries. I am also a big fan of films and TV shows that are based in or inspired by folklore, mythology and all things supernatural from around the world.

MS: Finally, as we move into winter, what’s your biggest hope for the year ahead?

CN: My perennial hope is that humankind (especially our political leaders) can finally please realise that all beings – human and otherwise – are equal and special inhabitants of this lovely planet and that as this is the only planet that we have we need to look after it and each other a whole lot better!

Well said Ceri, I think we can all agree with that final sentiment! Ceri’s books are available on Amazon and at all good book stores. Follow her channel on YouTube, visit her blog and view her beautiful jewellery on Etsy.

The Magickal Earth

Nature’s Miracles”

This month we are diving into a box that is deceivingly small by The Magickal Earth. Their Premium Subscription Box is packed to the gills with items “curated to offer guidance through the months astrological phase. The box will always feature a monthly astrological overview, a brief monthly horoscope, a tarot card chosen for you by the universe, crystals and gems to match the months energy, along with a variation of surprises including items such as, candles, essential oils, soap and, smudge sticks.”

All of this is included in the Premium Subscription Box for only $49.99 a month. This is just one of the Subscription Boxes that The Magickal Earth has to offer. They range in price from a mere $14.99 to $49.99 and cover a variety of wants and needs, from Crystal Boxes to Bath Boxes.

Now, let’s get into the box!

The smell emanating from the box is delicious and enticing. It makes me want to tear it open in a rush, but I must be methodical! So I open it carefully and peek inside.

First things first…what do we pull out???

Astrology Reading

When you are ordering your box you are asked to give your birth date. This is because The Magickal Earth includes a personal monthly astrology reading with this subscription box. I’m a Libra as you can see. You also get a pamphlet with planetary influences & energies for the month of the sign of the box.

One Card Pull

A one card Tarot pull is done for you. My card chosen was Temperance. They send you the card that is pulled for you along with another sheet that explains the Tarot card. It is up to you to read how this card plays in your life.

Abalone Smudge Shell

I am in love with this Abalone Shell. It’s large and very iridescent inside, delicate seeming, but sturdy, and gorgeous. The picture only sort of catches a bit of rainbow on the inside.

The iridescence is carried over the outside over a silver finish. There are a few “portholes” along the side that just add to the beauty. On the “mound side” there is a slight rusty patina on some of the holes giving it a real sea feeling.

BloodStone

Now this is an awesome piece of Blood stone that The Magickal Earth sends you. It is a big, smooth, tumbled piece. It is the size of the palm of your hand. It feels delicate, you don’t want to drop it. The color play in the stone is mesmerizing. A small card with some facts about Bloodstone accompanies the stone.

Quartz & Green Aventurine Stones

Two pieces of Quartz. They are both points. One is unique as it has a two points connected, one off shoot from the side. The larger one is a decent size, and the tinier one is on a small-scale but the uniqueness of it makes up for that.

The Green Aventurine is marbled with two shades of a light and dark green. It is smooth, tumbled, and medium-sized. A beautiful specimen.

Citrine

This is my favorite piece of Citrine that I have ever seen. I am amazed at the generous size. It is simply gorgeous! This picture does not do it justice. I could not get one that did. A huge piece of rough Citrine. A cloudy white base that rises to a deep yellow top that is flecked with almost rust colored specs. The vibrations coming from this stone are amazing.

Lip Care

Lip care by Night Bloom Apothecary is included in the Subscription Box. It feels very moisturizing on the lips. The scent is natural. It leaves a fresh feeling behind. When you rub your lips together it blends in nicely. It’s not overly oily feeling on your mouth or gooky.

Bar of Soap

Minty Magic is the name of the bar. The sticker on the back of the packaging tells you all the ingredients. It has a true mint scent, not a sweet mint, but a fresh mint scent. It lathers nicely and leaves behind a clean feeling, not dry.

Crystal Infused Energy Cleansing Mist

This blend is by NightBloom Apothecary. You can see the herbs & stones in this mixture. More so than I have seen in other’s that I have reviewed. You shake it and hear the many crystals chime against each other. When reading the ingredients you see they are pure de-stressers; lavender, clary sage, etc… The scent is amazing and it leaves you feeling soothed.

Stand and Smudge Stick to Complete Smudge Set

Now I am on the bottom of the box and what do I find? The Magickal Earth truly meant for this to be a Smudge Set. They have included a Stand. I thought the gorgeous Abalone Shell was just a stand alone. This is a great surprise. It’s a very nice wooden stand accompanied by a large smudge stick. This is a most wonderful Smudge Set.

My Overall Opinion…

I found The Magickal Earth to have a very impressive box. I really enjoyed their theme of cleansing in the box and think they kept it on target with great products made of wonderful quality. The portions in their Subscription Box were very generous. I have found my new citrine for working with. The Smudge Kit is a great gift for those new to smudging as well as those who have been smudging for years. The Energy Cleansing Mist impressed me the most with it’s quality. I also, really appreciated their personal attention with the astrology reading & one card drawing.  It really personalizes your box, you know no one else is getting a box like yours.  They spent time thinking about just you for the moment.  This box is most definitely Worth the Witch!

We got to speak with the woman behind The Magickal Earth boxes, Janet Barto, and ask her the usual from Worth the Witch. Here is what Janet had to say…

PaganPagesOrg (PPO): What brought the idea of your box to you?

Janet Barto(JB): When we started the Magickal Earth we started not with the subscription box in mind. I wanted to do what I loved most and that was crystals and rocks. The subscription box idea just came. We looked at the different boxes being offered and wanted to be unique. Thus, we came up with combining Astrology, Tarot and Crystals together.

PPO: How did you begin them?

JB: I won’t lie, it was a huge process. So much research went into every aspect. From Designing the box to how the contents would be included. I must say it is very hard work to start a subscription box. Especially ours and other like ours. So much attention to every detail. When you start you want every single piece to be absolutely perfect.

PPO: How do you choose what you include inside of them?

JB: First, we look at the Astrological calendar, then we look at the season, and from there I let my intuition take it home. Every item is hand chosen. Every item has a meaning of some kind to make it all part of the whole.

PPO: Is yours a recurring monthly box?

JB: Yes, we offer our box in many forms. We have a recurring box on Cratejoy and on our website. We then also off 3 or 6 month subscriptions at a discounted rate. Costing ranges from $14.99 delivered to $49.99 delivered.

PPO: Are you, yourself pagan?

JB: I am a second degree priestess within Chalice Hart in Washington. I am also a medium and I have trained in Shaman work.

PPO: Tell us about your interests.

JB: I have 2 business I now run full-time. But when I get to play we go on Jeep Runs. We do a lot of off roading in the mountains. I also love Football and Baseball.

PPO: Did you feel the pagan world was missing something to make you create your Box?

JB: This is a good question. I believe the answer is that I wanted ordinary people who had interests in Astrology and in Tarot to be able to order a box that was not just about witchcraft or spells. Kind of a middle ground. I wanted to really try to express that we are all part of the universe no matter what religion or craft you follow.

PPO: Do you have a site and sell other products?

JB: Our website is still a work in progress. As we are doing the boxes we are meeting people with many wonderful handmade items. Magickal Earth is about anything that comes from the Earth.

Our goal at The Magickal Earth is about personal attention. When you order from us we think hard about exactly the right stone or item to pick out for you. We understand how difficult it is for people to order crystals online. It is hard to not be able to see or feel. So when we are choosing for you, we are thinking hard about you and letting the universe help us chose the right one.

The Magickal Earth is growing everyday. And we believe that those who order from us become part of our family. It is all about our connection to them through the universe.

I think they really understood and connected with me. From my readings…to the crystals that really rang a note with me…this was an incredible box. Thank you Janet Barto for taking the time to chat with us. You really have an incredible box on your hands.

Ceri Norman: Faerie Stones, An Explanation of the Folklore and Faeries Associated with Stones and Crystals

Ceri is a prolific writer, with several books under her belt and numerous magazine articles. This book, Faerie Stones, was mentioned by a friend and I was intrigued by the title and the concept. Faerie Stones takes a wide variety of stones and crystals and gives a great deal of information about each one, including but not limited to the deities and beings or spirits associated with them.

It’s worth noting that in this book the term faerie is used to cover a wide variety of beings including deities and spirits. I understand why Ceri has done this, as it makes it simpler to use one term to cover all the otherworldly beings. Normally I would be quite particular about the use of the term fairy or faerie due to my Celtic heritage, in which the fairies are less than friendly much of the time! However, in this volume Ceri makes it clear who and what she is talking about each time she mentions a specific deity or spirit, so it remains very clear what type of being is being discussed.

I love how each stone is brought to life and given a very organic feel. It’s as if each stone is a living part of the world, which greatly appeals to my druidic leanings. I also loved all the references to different types of ‘little people’, a fascination for me for many years.

Ceri covers stones from the tiniest crystal to huge standing circles, and her introduction and the first part of the book really show her enthusiasm and passion for her subject. Just reading her descriptions of standing stones and other places of power made me want to go out into the world and find these places for myself. You can’t help but be pulled along by the energy within the book, joyful and full of experience and knowledge.

The encyclopaedia section covers 26 stones and their correspondences and uses, and particularly the beings that are drawn to them. There’s a separate section on the different formations of quartz which I found particularly enlightening as it had not occurred to me that the different formations of quartz could have different effects on the world. Ceri also touches on the chakras and stones associated with them, auras, meditating with stones and crystals and a chakra balancing meditation with Morgan Le Fay. I appreciated very much that Ceri notes that beings such as Morgan have both light and dark sides.

This is one of those great books that can be read from cover to cover for sheer joy, and also kept as a point of reference. It will certainly be near the top of my kindle library for the foreseeable future.

Protection Stones

This month I think is an appropriate time to discuss protecting yourself, your aura & your space. You can use many tools to remove negative energy from your environment, such as salt, smudge, herbs etc, but my favorite way is with crystal allies of course!

There are tons of crystals we could discuss but for lengths sake we will talk about my top 10 protection stones. They are not in any order, I encourage you to work with or wear as many of these amazing stones as you can!

Smoky Quartz: Smoky quartz is one of my favorite stones for many reasons, but for wearing as a protection amulet it is my go to. I try to wear it every single day. It not only absorbs any negative energy around you, it also transmute that energy. So its such an important tool we have been given by mama Gaia. I recommend smoky quartz for wearing and for placing inside the front entrance to your home. It will absorb any negative energy ickys being brought inside your space from all who enter. It doesn’t need to be a huge specimen, a simple smoky quartz tumble is perfect. It’s also a master healer and when placed on the body will remove toxic energies, neutralize negativity and infuse the body with healing white light. It also relieves painful emotions. I have personally seen how powerful this crystal is and can’t recommend a stone any higher.

Black Tourmaline: Black tourmaline is kinda the big gun of protection stones. It’s very heavy and strong. It removes negative energy within a person or a space.  I prefer black tourmaline buried on the four corners of the property lines, or placed in the four corners of the home. It’s also the perfect stone for protection in your vehicle as it protects from theft. I keep a black tourmaline pendant hanging from my rear view mirror. It cleanses, purifies and transforms dense energy into a lighter vibration. It balances, harmonizes and protects all chakras.  It’s also another great one to wear on your body as jewelry.

Black Tourmaline Rutile: This is simply black tourmaline bars within a quartz matrix. Quartz is the ultimate magnification stone, so this is black tourmaline magnified. Black rutile cleanses and energizes the aura. It draws off negative energies and disease and helps one let go of the past. It also gives protection from the ill thoughts of others. I also love the look of black tourmaline rutile, it’s so neat looking. So this is a favorite in jewelry pieces.

Garnet: Garnet is to me gentle loving protection, and I keep a huge piece of it on my coffee table at all times. It’s to me protection of the emotions and mind. If I’m feeling stressed or on edge this is the stone I turn to for comfort & safety. It’s a talisman of protection and unyielding strength. It increases willpower and resistance to all things negative. It’s a spiritual stone of psychic protection. One of my favorite stones to wear as jewelry.

Black Onyx: Black Onyx is stone that absorbs, transforms and prevents the drain of personal energy. It helps provide emotional and physical strength when support is needed during stressful, confusing or tumultuous times. It’s a good stone for grief. It also protects you from psychic attack and guards the wearer from the evil eye.

Black Kyanite: Black Kyanite is a stone that instantly upon contact clears anything of negative energy. It also never needs to be cleansed. It’s a great stone to keep on hand, if you get a new stone or piece of jewelry you can just touch the black kyanite to it and its clear & ready to go. So simple! I also keep a blade of black kyanite with my tarot & oracle cards. When i pull them out to use them I always place my black kyanite on top for a minute before I shuffle. Black Kyanite clears all energy blockages and imbalances within the chakras. It aligns, grounds and centers. It elevates the level of good vibrations within the energy field. It repairs tears or holes when placed upon the chakra points with its healing energy. Obviously wearing this stone will keep you clean and clear of any unwanted energies as well. Its a spectacular stone!

Aegirine: This is a rarer more expensive stone but well worth the trouble to find. Its claim to fame and what makes this stone unique is its ability to act as a shield that guards the aura, all while assisting the wearer to discover their courage and confidence in refining their power and strength. It’s known as a “guardian harmonizer”. It removes negative cords and energy attachments within the auric field. It also protects from electromagnetic smog.

Obsidian: Obsidian is strongly protective and forms a shield against negativity. It blocks psychic attacks and absorbs negative energy from the environment. It draws out mental stress and tension. It’s a cleaner of psychic smog created in your aura. Obsidian is an auric cleanser. Specifically golden sheen or silver sheen obsidian can be used as a “bar of soap” and run along the entire body making back and forth motions like you are scrubbing away all negativity from your auric field.

Selenite: Selenite is a beautiful, easy to find and inexpensive crystal that u can use to clear other stones, clear a space, open ritual circle or sacred space and clear yourself. It has an angelic feeling to me. Pure white light. It looks like it’s literally glowing sometimes. Selenite resonates at higher frequencies. Used for undoing the effects of negative emotions on one’s mind and body. Placing on the body it removes unwanted or negative energies.  A great beginner stone as well. I love a flat piece of selenite or charging plate that you can place smaller stones or your jewelry on to clear.

Shungite: Shungite is a detoxifier and a cleanser. It kills and devours anything that harms people and then restores what is good. Its been called “miracle stone” and “stone of life”. It has been used for water purification since ancient Rome. It’s also a good stone to protect yourself from harmful EMF’s. I keep a Shungite pyramid in front of my tv for this purpose. It’s also a perfect stone to wear, especially if you are around a lot of different energies in the workplace, such as hospitals and trauma centers. Shungite keeps you from picking up negative and unwanted energy from others and the environment.

I hope this is a useful brief explanation of some helpful crystals to work with for whatever type of protection you are needing. These are all staples in my crystal collection and I can’t imagine doing without them!

On another note, if you are looking to start gridding, or in the market for crystal grids, I encourage you to read my three grid reviews/interviews that are in this months content here on Pagan Pages. Grids for all price points and different materials. Check it out! Thanks for stopping by this month and I hope you will come back next month!

Have a blessed Samhain!

Celebrating Autumn with Norma Clark of Forevrgoddess Boutique

September, 2018

Autumn Smudge Bundle with Gemstones

Hello, I’m Norma with Forevrgoddess Boutique, I wanted to share some info on Smudging herbs, gemstones and smudge rituals.  I don’t know about you, but the first day of September feels magickal, with apples and pumpkins abundantly everywhere.  I think it’s the perfect time to do an Autumn ritual smudging to cleanse home, sacred space or people, to remove negative or stale energy, banish and release emotions, illness, and other energy needing to be removed from home or person, to prepare for the coming of the Autumn Equinox & Samhain. You might have seen a few smudging herb bundles in new age stores, witch shops or online, there are many to choose from.

Smudging has been done in ancient cultures to Native American, in Spanish countries like Mexico, through Central and South America. Some of these herbs are used in smudging rituals by Shamans.  Some of these herbs can also be used in blessings, after ritual cleansings of homes or people. You can perform a blessing within a home  to invite harmony, love, laughter, tranquility, happiness and prosperity, or what ever is needed at the moment. For personal blessings you can do any of these ideas as well.

You can typically find in stores or online: White sage,  Juniper, cedar, Yerba Santa and Palo Santo. Any of these bundles of herbs can be helpful. Combining them with gemstones and crystals is an additional bonus and can help give healing/loving energy to aid with manifesting the properties you need most. Cleansing Stones

Cleanse each gemstone with smudging blend burning in shell, to ensure it’s a positive energy to help with your goal you wish to create. It’s to ensure the gemstones, which have passed through so many hands, to get to you at home, are cleaned of other’s energies that might not fit in. Hold stone in hand take shell and pass it over and under stone to encase it with smoke.

Arranging Gemstones

Once stones are cleansed, set up an area where your stones will be seen through the day (altar, mantel, etc..) arrange stones however you wish. I suggest to put selenite in middle and surround other stones around the selenite so the selenite will energize the other stones. Like a mini crystal grid. If you have more stones, flowers, candles feel free to add them, to help further the goal you have in mind.

Herkimer Diamonds, a Girls Best Friend

Last month I finally got to cross a long held dream of mine off my bucket list….going to Herkimer NY to dig for herkimer diamonds!! It was a bonus that they have a fabulous annual gem show there and I was able to go while it was happening! First I will give you an overview of herkimers and what makes them so special, then I will tell you about my experience there!!

Herkimer diamonds are a very unique and distinct type of quartz. They are composed of silicon dioxide and have a hexagonal structure. They are found in only one place in the world, in Herkimer, NY (hence their name). Dolomite limestone is the rock formation in which they are found. Surface water seeped down into the ground and got trapped in pockets. From intense heat and pressure these beauties were formed.

They are special because they are the highest vibration quartz there is! If you read my article from July “The Power of Quartz“, you already know that quartz as a group is the highest vibration mineral there is….and within the quartz family, herkimers vibrate highest of all! The other thing that sets herkimers apart and makes them easy to spot from regular clear quartz, is that they grow with double terminations (points on both ends). This is not only aesthetically pleasing, it makes them in effect wands, because you can use them to send energy in two directions, or can make a circle (or loop) of energy around you or a space. While regular clear quartz does sometimes naturally grow with double terminations, its few and far between. ALL herkimers grow this way, some may have breakage and you might not see both terminations, but they all grow this way. They also have a shorter more squat appearance compared to double terminated regular quartz. Once you are familiar with herkimers they’re very easy to spot.

Herkimers are called “diamonds” because they are known for their crystal clear clarity and stunning rainbows. They are every bit as beautiful as genuine diamonds in my opinion. (Though I do love my diamonds as well!) Herkimer specimens can be quite pricey due to their beauty, as well as herkimer jewelry. The best of the best quality is used for faceted jewelry, and that’s hard to find and very expensive. You can find reasonably priced natural herkimers set in sterling silver (I try to always have some in stock for customers).

Remember, quartz magnifies, so wearing it with your other crystals will turbo boost the other stones metaphysical properties! I love wearing all quartz, but herks are my definite favorite of all!

Within herks, some have black carbon inclusions, some are smoky, some are skeletal, some have clay inclusions, some are enhydros (water bubble trapped inside) some are golden healers (yellow or golden in color) and some are huge clusters with multiple herkimers connected to one another. There is a herkimer for every taste and budget. If you dont have any yet I highly recommend adding one to your collection!

Herkimers are known to magnify or boost the properties of any other crystal. They are especially great to pair with the synergy 12 crystals we discussed last month. I, personally, love herkimer and moldavite together. Talk about a power combo!!

Herkimers are ascension stones. Herkimers are great for helping with dream recall and lucid dreams, simply place under your pillow at night. Herks are amazing meditation tools. They help you to astral travel, to connect the astral plane to the physical plane. They help to purify your energy field. They promote creativity and insights. Herks boost your psychic powers, clairvoyant and clairaudient abilities, telepathic abilities, channeling, and enhances communication with your spirit guides. Herkimers activate the third eye, crown and soul star chakras. And if all that wasn’t impressive enough, it also boosts your immune system and helps you to heal both physically and emotionally! Wow this is one impressive crystal! And since they are quartz you can even program them!!

Ok, now that you are familiar with herkimers, lets talk about my trip!

Saturday was the first day of the gem show (it is two days long). We went the first day and got there early. It was herkimer heaven! Two huge buildings filled with vendors, and a bunch set up outside as well. They had crystals of every type, color and size. Just a total feast for the eyes! Of course I was mostly there for the herks but I love all crystals so I enjoyed looking at everything! We spent the day there and I found a few herks to add to my collection as well as a few for customers. The prices were decent. Not a steal by any means but reasonable and definitely less expensive than purchasing online or at crystal shops. It was a total blast going to the gem show!

The next day I was ready to go to a mine! There are a few mines you can choose from, but after speaking to a few sellers at the show, the Ace of Diamonds mine seemed to be the most recommended. So that’s where we went! You want to go prepared in old clothes and shoes, gloves, hat, eye wear and sunscreen. You can bring some garden tools, hammer, bucket, shovel and a pick. If you don’t have tools you can rent them in the gift shop. We got lucky with an overcast mildly rainy morning. We found a spot we liked and got started! If you look close in spots you can see little tiny sparkles in the dirt and rocks. The dirt is packed very hard with huge chunks of rock/matrix. It is quite a workout to get the stuff apart. About an hour in, we had quite a few tiny herks and some broken pieces of herkimers. Then a huge dump truck came and dumped a load of new rocks and dirt. I got on top (it was about 12 ft tall) and started digging around. I found some just lying there under a rock! It was so exciting when I found one! I also found a bunch of huge pieces of matrix with herks safely tucked inside, slightly peeking out enough for us to see it….but not enough to get it out! So we ended up loading my car up with a ton and a half of rocks to work on later at home lol.

This trip was so much fun, and if you are ever able to go herkimer mining you should give it a try! You get to keep anything you find. Its only $10 to mine all day long and its so exciting digging for buried treasure! These are staying in my collection forever. I will always remember when I got to mine my own crystal babies! Thanks for reading and I hope you will come back next month! I also did a grid review this month that I hope you will check out too.

Love and crystal blessings,

xoxo Retha

Synergy 12 Crystals, Explained

The synergy 12 crystals are a group of 12 extremely powerful stones that are believed to work together to aid you in inner awakening, lightbody activation, and to enhance spiritual evolution and ascension. They were first described by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian in “The Book of Stones, Who They are and What they Teach” in 2005.

Many are easy to find and inexpensive, while a few are much rarer and more costly (such as phenacite, brookite, satyaloka quartz and herderite). Azeztulite is trademarked and is quite expensive. You can find the entire synergy 12 available to purchase together, or you can start acquiring them one by one. For not much money you can get half of the synergy 12 to work with. I want to give you a brief description of each of the synergy 12 stones. If you have the opportunity to start building a synergy 12 collection I highly recommend it. Read about each to see which you feel drawn to explore. All are next level tools on their own, but all together are the ultimate meditation aids.

Petalite

Ah, I love petalite. Petalite is lithium sodium aluminum silicate. Its hardness is 6-6.5. It has a monoclinic crystal structure. It can be white, colorless, gray, pinkish or yellow. Colorless can be faceted into stunning jewelry. It’s found in Brazil, Australia, Sweden, Namibia and Afghanistan. This is a stone of peace and tranquility, which provides a deep connection to the spirit realm. It’s a visioning stone. It enhances all psychic gifts. It also helps you to attune to your path of highest destiny, or dharma. Wonderful manifestation stone. With its unique grounding aspect it allows you to stay tethered to earth while exploring inner dimensions and higher realms. Petalite is associated with the wind element and the astrology sign Pisces.

Moldavite

This is one you may have heard a lot of buzz about and rightly so. Moldavite is a glassy mixture of silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide and other metal oxides. Its hardness is 5.5-6. It has an amorphous crystal system. Most are a deep forest green, but some are a pale green and some even a brownish green. It is a member of the tektite group. 14.8 million yrs ago a large meteorite crashed into what is now the bohemian plateau of the Czech republic. The moldavite fields have become depleted, so the stones are increasingly rare and more expensive. There is some debate as to exactly how the moldavite formed, but one thing is clear, it indeed fell from the sky. We can tell by the aerodynamic shapes of certain pieces. It has been a spiritual talisman going all the way back to the neolithic peoples of eastern Europe. Today it is a most prized tool in the metaphysical community. Its effects vary from mild to very intense for some. The main use of this stone is to accelerate the path of ones evolution. It’s an amazing aid in meditation, dreamwork and to discern messages from the higher realms. It also offers spiritual protection. It is associated with the storm element and the astrological sign Taurus.

Danburite

I adore danburite. It’s one of my very favorite crystals. It is a calcium borosilicate crystal. It has a hardness of 7-7.5. It was discovered in Danbury, Connecticut. The crystals are usually 4 sided and their terminations are generally chisel shaped. They are orthorhombic and prismatic with linear striations. Most are colorless or white, but some are pale pink or light yellow. They have been found in Russia, Madagascar, Bolivia, Burma, Japan and most abundantly in Mexico. Fewer good specimens are being found and they are becoming increasingly rare. Danburite is an aid to lift awareness to higher spiritual vibrations. It has a special connection to the angelic realm. This stone expresses powerful unconditional love. It helps you to release worry and stress. It soothes and helps you get a good night’s sleep. It is associated with the wind element and the astrological sign aquarius.

Phenacite (or phenakite)

Phenacite is a beryllium silicate. It has a hardness of 7.5-8. It has a hexagonal (trigonal) crystal system and often crystallizes in short prisms. It is very rare, especially in transparent well formed crystals. It varies greatly depending on the location its found. It’s found in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Norway, Russia, Tanzania, Switzerland and the USA. This is the ultimate 3rd eye chakra stone. It’s so strong that even those that aren’t sensitive to crystal energies can feel it when placed on the 3rd eye. It has one of the highest frequencies in the mineral kingdom. It can be used to awaken the latent special capacities of the brain, which can bring about spontaneous telepathy, prophetic visions or remote viewing. It’s associated with the storm element and astrological sign Leo.

Brookite

Brookite is a titanium oxide crystal. Its hardness is 5.5-6. It has an orthorhombic crystal system. Its color is usually dark gray or black, but can also be yellow-brown or reddish-brown. It’s found in England, the French alps, and Arkansas, USA. It’s a crystal that’s inspirational and energizing. It can assist in overcoming old patterns and move to greater inner development. It’s a powerstone for expansion of awareness beyond the physical body. It can align all the upper chakras with the rest of ones energy body. It expands consciousness into higher dimensions of light. It is associated with the storm element and the astrological sign Capricorn.

Natrolite

Natrolite is a sodium aluminum silicate mineral. Its hardness is 5-5.5. It has an orthorhombic crystal system. They can be colorless, white, yellowish or gray. They have been found in the Czech republic, New Jersey, USA, India and Russia. It’s one of the most powerful stones to stimulate the 3rd eye and crown chakras. Natrolites energy moves beyond the physical body and activates ones conscious link with the 8th-14th chakras (above the head). This stone can help you to develop communication with your angelic helpers. It can bring light to any part of the body where there are slow-moving or blocked energies. This stone brings optimism and hope. It’s associated with the storm element and the astrological sign Libra.

Herderite

Herderite is a calcium beryllium phosphate. It has a hardness of 5-5.5. It has a monoclinic crystal system. It can be colorless, pale yellow, green, brownish-gray or even lavender. They are very rare. Most come from Brazil, but have also been found in Africa and Afghanistan. Herderite aids in communication with spirit guides and light beings, and with interdimensional travel. It helps us to experience ourselves as an energy field that exists way beyond our physical body. We realize there is a sphere of awareness way larger than our physical self. It enhances our senses as we meditate. This stone can be quite intense, so extra time to ground after working with it is wise. Herderite is associated with the storm element and astrological sign Gemini.

Tanzanite

Tanzanite is a calcium aluminium silicate mineral. It is a member of the zoisite family. It has an orthorhombic crystal system. It has a hardness of 6.5-7. Color ranges from blue to blue-violet, though some can be golden to brownish yellow. It was first discovered in 1967 in Tanzania, Africa. Tiffany & Co., the NY jewelers, introduced it as Tanzanite and it became the accepted name, though technically it is blue zoisite. Tanzanite can integrate the energies of the heart and the mind through the linkage and attunement of the heart and 3rd eye chakras. It also makes it hard to deny what one knows in the heart, and helps you to speak your truth. It helps with verbal and written expression. It provides a strong anchoring in the heart. It enhances our intuitive vision. And it opens us up to deep intimacy with others. It is associated with the wind element and the astrological sign cancer.

Tibetan Tektite

Tektites are glassy masses created from meteoric impacts. They have a hardness of 5.5-6. They have an amorphous crystal structure. They are rich in silica, with their silicon dioxide content between 68% and 82%. Tibetan tektite specifically refers to the family of brown-black or black tektites found in Tibet and southern China. The metaphysical information following is for Tibetan tektite, not tektite from other locales. Tibetan tektite is a synergy 12 stone, whereas the other tektites are not. Tibetan tektites are used for lucid dreaming and it’s advised to sleep with two, one by the head and one by the feet. You can also use seven pieces to stimulate and activate the light body by placing one on each chakra point. It will open the chakra column/spinal energy channel. Tibetan tektite is associated with the storm element and the astrological sign Scorpio.

Scolecite

I am a huge fan of scolecite. Scolecite is a hydrous calcium aluminum silicate, a zeolite mineral. It has a hardness of 5-5.5. It has a monoclinic crystal structure. It has thin, vertically striated prismatic crystals and also grows out in radiating fibrous masses. It can be colorless, white or yellowish. It has been found in Teigarhorn, Iceland and Poona, India. It is the stone of true inner peace and tranquility. It’s ideal for use in healing, meditation, restful sleep, lucid dreaming and journeying. It enhances the heart chakra energies and helps you to spontaneously express love more freely. It also protects your auric field and cleanses it with its healing radiance and charges it with its pure white light. It’s associated with the wind and water elements and the astrological sign Virgo.

Azeztulite

This is a very special variety of quartz. It has a hexagonal (trigonal) crystal system. As all quartz it has a hardness of 7. The original Azeztulite came from a single find in North Carolina, USA around 1970. Over 30 yrs later a second deposit was found in Vermont. Since, Azeztulites have been found in multiple locales. Each are different and carry their own properties. Here we are strictly talking about the azeztulites from north Carolina and Vermont. It’s referred to as white Azeztulite or original Azeztulite. This is a very powerful stone. It is said that when you open up to Azeztulite it feels like being in the presence of something holy. The liquid crystal body matrix probably resonates more strongly with Azeztulite than any other stone. It carries the current of the central sun. If you hold this stone over your 3rd eye chakra, its said that you will see light in the interior of the skull, its one of the hallmarks of Azeztulite, as is pleasurable sensations that are hard to compare to any others. Azeztulite is associated with the storm element and astrological sign Aries.

Satyaloka Quartz (Satyaloka Azeztulite)

This is a variety of quartz, with a hardness of 7. It has a hexagonal (trigonal) crystal system. Satyaloka forms as small prismatic crystals, translucent or white, sometimes with inclusions of reddish-brown or gray. It comes from the Satya Loka mountains of southern India. It was originally gathered by monks of the Satya Loka Monastery, who sent it out into the world as a way of spreading the energy of spiritual enlightenment. South India is said to be the crown chakra of the world, so it makes perfect sense that satyaloka quartz opens the crown chakra with an immense flow of energy. It vibrates to the frequency of enlightenment. It might be called the most “hard core” of all the Azeztulites, maybe even of all stones. This stone is a stone of powerful spiritual dedication. It aids in traveling thru the realms of light to higher planes of reality. It’s associated with the storm element and astrological sign Sagittarius.

I hope this overview of the synergy 12 will inspire you to try working with one if you haven’t yet, or to encourage you to add another to your collection if you’ve already worked with some. The ultimate is to have them all and then you can build a synergy 12 grid and use sacred geometry to amplify these intense crystals even more. Another amazing way to work with these stones is to wear them. You can choose the one you connect to the strongest or you can even find vial pendants that have chipstones of all 12 stones.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will come back next month when I tell all about my trip to Herkimer, NY this past month for the gem show and to go mining for herkimer diamonds!

Crystal blessings!

Claws with Crystals

Merry meet.

Bones are a type of fetish,” Sarah Anne Lawless posted on her website. “A fetish is ‘an object regarded with awe as being the embodiment or habitation of a potent spirit or as having magical potency (source).’ The word fetish originates from the French fétiche which stems from the Portuguese word feitiço meaning ‘charm’ or ‘sorcery.’ Feathers, bones, crystals, and stones are all types of fetishes. Skulls and bones have an appeal to witches who perform spirit work and are a necessary and simple way to connect with spirits of the dead and of animals.

Working with bones is not just for necromancers and black magicians. Practitioners who work with bones are a wide range of healers, diviners, shapeshifters, rootworkers, witches, shamans, druids, and pagans.”

When a hunter I respected offered me wings and claws from turkey he had killed, I accepted. I covered the severed ends all with salt, rubbing in, placing them in a box and adding more salt. When more were gifted to me, I placed the fleshy ends in borax. Both were left to dry for several months. (An explanation of a process can be found on many sites.)

When I received them they were already a couple of days old, but the claws were pliable. I was drawn to having them hold crystals. The shape of some of the polished stones I chose made them unworkable. Thankfully, the pagan store I frequent did not mind me bringing in the legs and holding up crystals to determine what would be a good fit. Certain stones seemed to want certain claws, so I went with it.

There is a lot to be said for a more intentional approach, but as I sensed only one was for me, I did not consider uses and intentions that you would if you were making one for yourself.

I positioned each toe and talon to curl around the stone and then began wrapping it all in string to secure it while it dried. In one instance I used tape and while it worked, I think the string was easier to use and adjust.

After a few months had gone by I unwrapped them and found each was stone securely held.

It would be natural to use them as a wand – as is, embellished or attached to another wand – to direct power. A woman who bought one planned to tie it with a cord that went around her neck so it hung almost to her waist.

Bones carry the animal’s magical attributes which is one of the reasons I have worked with bear claws, a turtle shell and a coyote’s jawbone. Smaller bones have fit in mojo bags created to address various needs.

Turkey is considered a good omen, signaling that gifts are imminent. It’s also “a symbol of sacrifice for renewal and that generosity will open the doors to growth and rebirth,” according to a few websites posting the same information.

Turkey as a totem animal means you are “the abundance generator” for your community.

You have a gift for attracting all the bounty of the universe available to you and you are willing to share. You will often meet the needs of others in a giveaway self-sacrifice form simply because all life is sacred to you. You easily translate your life experience into growth and understanding. You recognize that what you do for others you also do for yourself,” according to spirit-animals.com and other sites.

Awareness, creation, generosity, harvest, pride, purpose, sacrifice, understanding and virility are also associated with turkey.

Knowing this, if you would like to make something similar, ask the Source and then be ready to receive what the universe brings it to you.

Merry part. And merry meet again.

She draws on an eclectic mix of old ways she has studied – from her Sicilian and Germanic heritage to Zen and astrology, the fae, Buddhism, Celtic, the Kabbalah, Norse and Native American – pulling from each as she is guided. She practices yoga, reads Tarot and uses Reiki. From the time she was little, she has loved stories, making her job as the editor of two monthly newspapers seem less than the work it is because of the stories she gets to tell. She lives with her large white cat, Pyewacket, in central Connecticut. You can follow her boards on Pinterest, and write to her at woikelynn at gmail dot com.

Cover art: Large Brown Fairy Garden decor Door Set with Accessories. Hand cast and painted by Jassmond Masters-Bell of the Etsy shop Fairy Behind the Door, featured in an interview this month with her.

About the door: This Fairy door belongs to Mrs Odina. She owns a Nights Fairy dormitory where she allows the traveling fairy to stop by and sleepover before they continue on their journey. She runs a tight tree house, her fees are fair but you have to bring your own berries and goats milk for breakfast. It says on the Door “Fairies Sleeping” so be quiet when you pass by.

When you see a tremendous wrong in the world do you just sit by and let it happen? Though Jennifer Engrácio , and PaganPagesOrg, usually stay out of political stances, human rights are being violated and she has something to say and we stand behind her! Please read Children and the Seven Generations. See where you stand.

A few new columns we will be adding in PaganPagesOrg are updates and features monthly on our favorite Podcasts. These are the ones we listen to and find to be the most informative and really top notch. We started, already, by bringing back broadcasts of Going Shamanic Radio. Now, we are proud to announce we will be featuring 3 Pagans and a Cat. Personally, I think you will love them from the first episode. How they make you feel secure on your path. The rounded knowledge. No fear in saying I don’t know. The learning, the sharing, the laughing. The correctness in information. This podcast is the complete package. A must listen.

An Interview with Astrid Brown. Astrid Brown is a medium, a psychic, and an incredibly prolific author. Her most recent offering, A Psychic Affair, blends the mysteries of psychic development with the romance genre, exploring how long-distance relationships can develop not only through the words and messages we send, but through a true, psychic connection.

This month starts a new column: Mojo Bag of the Month, beginning with a bag that will help to raise your vibration! With the many shifts and changes that are coming, we need to raise our vibration to ride out the wave. Have a read to see what you need for this month’s bag.

This month Robin Fennelly reviews the book Moon Magic: Your Complete Guide to Harnessing the Mystical Energy of the Moon by author Diane Ahlquist. Robin breaks down this book for us explaining all this volume has to offer and if it’s worth adding to our libraries.
