Fortuna

Fortuna is a Roman goddess of luck, fortune, prosperity and fate who was at one time very popular.  With Greek influence, Fortuna became Tykhe and was also a very popular deity there.  She was even popular in Italy and she had more temples than any other God in that time.  She was always afforded the most luxurious kinds of worship since people hoped it would bring them good fortune.

She is usually depicted holding a cornucopia in one hand, and a ship’s rudder in the other.  Sometimes she is blindfolded or veiled and most of the time she is standing on or near a globe or wheel.  The cornucopia is all about value, abundance and infinite supply.  It symbolizes lush bounty that she can provide. The ship’s rudder stands for her guiding mankind through the ups and downs, twists and turns of life.   The globe shows her ability to oversee the world’s activities and the wheel is symbolic of the many cycles of life and her ability to keep alive a fluid motion in the business of living it.

Fortuna was worshipped by soldiers and royalty.  She is also a patron of sailors as the overseer of all lucks facets. She is on the wheel of fortune tarot card and to this day many mention her without realizing who she is when they ask for help from ‘lady luck’. Obviously gamblers are fans of asking for her help.

She favors the brave, but also the foolish and she rewards those who embrace life and go with the flow rather than fight it.  Of course, she can also hand out bad luck, fortune and chance.  A good, modern way to invoke Fortuna’s help is to put almond oil or pineapple juice on the wheels of your vehicle (even if it’s just a bicycle) as this will keep fortune ‘rolling in’. There is a hymn for Fortuna, although it focused more on her Greek name Tykhe.  She was part of the Moirai (Fates) which is also mentioned in this hymn.

Turrent- crowned Queen, I sing

Immortal Agathe Tykhe, Fortuna to the Romans

Elder sidter of the Moiroi

Goddesses three, who weave the threads of mortal lives

Friend of all mankind

Who bears the cornucopia and metes good and evil

Rich and poor alike must deal with

Your decrees, O Goddess.

O primal One without parent, I pray

Allow me to accept

The twists and turns that Fate deals

To see the opportunity in the tragedy

And to understand what I am meant to do.

Help me to make the right choices,

Where my Fate depends on it.

And to accept my lack of control,

Where it does not

Let me always act with honour

Whatever you set before me

Send me only hardships I can endure,

And that will make me a better person

This I pray, O Glorious Tykhe

September and Squirrel Nutkin

At long last Mother Earth is balancing and the slow move toward the winter months begin.  I watch as the squirrels and chipmunks in my yard are gathering acorns and other nuts and hurrying away. The last of the hummingbirds are visiting the bird feeders getting fatter and fatter in anticipation of the long flight further south.

Self Discipline and Self Reliance are the virtues for this month and little Squirrel Nutkin is the perfect example of both of those ideas.

Having the discipline to prepare for our own needs in order to be self-reliant is something sorely lacking in our society these days. I’m not talking about Zombie Apocalypse preparation, although I am I favor of always being prepared. I am thinking more along the lines of striving to be independent.

Our chosen path of spirituality is an independent one. By following our own heart we open to what resonates within our being. Our discipline within the path brings meaning and depth of understanding.

Squirrel Nutkin is following an instinct to gather and hide for the coming days. Every day without fail he gathers and hides. He will be sitting pretty when the cold of winter appear. Relying on his own instincts assures him survival until spring.

We, too, can follow his lead. This is the perfect time to visit a farmer’s market and load up on goodies to can or dehydrate. A stocked pantry is a lovely sight! This is also a great time to load up on herbs as well. Our magical pantry needs a look. Are there herbs that need replacing? How about creating some oils for spell work?

Time to gather up for fall and winter. Take a look around. What do you need? How can you prepare?

The Jealous Girlfriend

“A jealous girlfriend is a faithful girlfriend. If she doesn’t get jealous when someone has your attention it’s because someone has hers. “

This was a status message that I read a few weeks ago on facebook. Surprised? Facebook seems to have a lot of these random pieces of ‘wisdom’. I use the word wisdom in quotations because while others may view this message as such, I do not.  Wonder why? Well, let me explain why I do NOT in any way view these words as wisdom.

First, I want to explore the definition of the word jealous. Jealous means an intolerance or hostility towards a rival or one believed to enjoy an advantage. Does jealousy seem like a good or positive trait to possess to you? Does it sound like a trait that goes hand in hand with faithfulness? Absolutely not. At least not in my opinion and here in this column is what you will read about … my opinion.

So what does faithfulness mean? Well, faithfulness means being steadfast or unwavering with affection and in this case the affection we are addressing is love.

So with these definitions of jealous and faithfulness in mind let’s dissect the first part of the above quote, which describes the subject of this bit of ‘wisdom’ – the girlfriend. Now this girlfriend is a female gendered individual who is (according to the definition of jealous) intolerant or holds some hostility toward another (presumably) female because the girlfriend believes that the other female has some advantage that she herself does not possess. In the above quote this advantage is the attention of the undirectly mentioned boyfriend behind the ‘your attention’ as this bit of wisdom was for his benefit. And because the girlfriend feels this hostility towards this other female that means that she is unwavering in her love for her boyfriend.

So if I follow the thoughts that the quote is encouraging me to then: your girlfriend is a faithful girlfriend if she gets jealous when you look or speak to another girl because if she didn’t then that means she’s too busy to care because she is looking or talking to another guy. If she does get jealous then all her attention is only on you as you look or speak to another girl. So she must really care about you. YAY! You’re the man!

Seriously?! How messed up is that?

I suggest that if your girlfriend is confident in herself, in the relationship the two of you have nurtured together, if she trusts you and respects herself then she would not get jealous. Jealousy originates within the emotion of fear. Faithfulness originates from a place of love. Fear is the polar opposite of love. So how could your girlfriend truly love you and remain faithful to you if she is coming from a place of fear? Jealously has no bearing on faithfulness. An individual can remain faithful and still be jealous. While the two may be byproducts of each other they are not exclusive.

If your girlfriend does get jealous then I suspect that there is a lack of communication going on in the relationship. There are things that should be discussed if you want the relationship to last. A jealous girlfriend is not the sign of a faithful girlfriend. A jealous girlfriend is the sign of an unhappy girlfriend. If your girlfriend doesn’t get jealous when someone has your attention perhaps she trusts you and she is aware that you have relationship based on trust, honesty, fidelity, respect and love not because someone else has her attention.

Ahhh….Sweet Grass….

I have such wonderful memories of the last time I attended the NW Herb Fest in Eugene, Oregon. It was during a rather hot weekend in July 2010, sadly, the last time the NW Herb Fest was held. Walking from the parking area in the fields, the air was heavy with the wonderful vanilla scent of Sweet Grass.

At the time, I didn’t know which plant was responsible for that amazing smell and it wasn’t until I purchased a braid of Sweet Grass at one of the vendor’s tables that I figured it out. That lovely braid remained fragrant for a very long time, reminding me of the wonderful time I had with friends at the NW Herb Fest that summer.

Sweet Grass-Hierochloe odorata-is a hardy perennial native to North America as well as Europe. Its binomial name literally means, “Holy Fragrant Grass” in Greek. Other common names include Vanilla Grass and Bison Grass. Coumarin, a chemical compound also found in other fragrant plants such a Sweet Woodruff and Sweet clover, gives Sweet Grass its wonderful vanilla scent.

In northern Europe, Sweet Grass was often scattered in front of church doors during certain feast days. In France it was used to flavor a number of products including tobacco, candy and perfume, and in Russia, it was used to flavor tea. Sweet Grass is an ingredient in the Polish vodka, ?ubrówka or Bison Vodka.

Sweet Grass has been used extensively by many of the indigenous North American peoples for ceremonial purposes. It was often burned for purification, as an offering to ancestors, for protection, initiation and for peace ceremonies.

Sweet Grass was used topically by some indigenous people in hair rinses and for chapped skin. It was also used in sewing, for making baskets as well as for stuffing mattresses and pillows.  Although Sweet Grass was sometimes smoked or taken as a tea for the treatment of upper respiratory conditions, I have been unable to find any references for contemporary medicinal use.

This spring I finally admitted that the fragrance from my precious Sweet Grass braid from 2010 was nearly spent and began searching for a source to obtain more. I have seen Sweet Grass sold in shops carrying metaphysical supplies, but I wanted a braid like the one I purchased at the NW Herb Fest: dry but still slightly green and alive with that amazing heady vanilla scent. I decided the only way to obtain what I wanted was to grow it myself.

I ordered one of the naturally occurring fast-growing varieties and decided to plant it in a very large plastic pot. My garden is currently in ‘remodeling mode’, so I didn’t want to add any permanent new residents right now. I also wanted to limit the plant’s prolific expansion throughout my garden. Sweet Grass likes full to partial sun and must not be allowed to become either too wet or to dry out.

My tiny baby Sweet Grass plant arrived in April, and so far, I have been able to take two cuttings with a third ready to be cut within a few days. I even shared a baby Sweet Grass plantlet with a friend. Granted, my braids are rather thin as the plant is still fairly small, but they have been incredibly fragrant with the smell intensifying after the Sweet Grass has been cut and begins to dry.

Several weeks after planting, I noticed that although the Sweet Grass appeared quite healthy, it really wasn’t growing very tall. This was rather odd considering how quickly grasses usually grow. Upon closer inspection I noticed that each blade had been neatly chewed off! I am not sure which little critter was responsible, but after wrapping some plastic mesh screen around the pot, this was no longer a problem.

When the Sweet Grass plant reaches 18”-24” tall, I cut it down to about 2” above the ground. I spread the blades of grass out on a baking rack placed on one of my kitchen counters away from direct heat and sunlight, allowing the grass to dry for a day or two before braiding. I have a braid of Sweet Grass on my altar, one tucked in a basket hanging on the inside of my front door and one hung on the wall next to a small altar in our living room.  The small bits and pieces left from the cuttings are added to my tarot card bags and other magickal items.  Sweet Grass is wonderful for smudging, but I found this takes a bit of practice as the braid doesn’t smoke like incense or a sage wand, but gently smolders.

The Great Plains Peoples believed that Sweet Grass was the first plant to cover Mother Earth.  I encourage you to treat your Sweet Grass with respect and take any used pieces out into your garden to be returned to the earth.

It’s Time for Mabon!

Herbs associated with Mabon are Sage and Milk Thistle.

Sage-  Sage is considered the Herb of the Wise.  The ancient Greeks and Romans  first used sage as a meat preserver.  In healing it was prescribed for snake bites, epilepsy, intestinal worms and chest ailments.  Today, we use sage to treat excessive perspiration, against several infection causing bacteria, food poisoning, digestive problems, sore throats and women’s health concerns.  Parts used are the leaves.  Magickal properties are: Sage absorbs negativity and misfortune. It drives away disturbances and tensions, and lifts the spirits above the mundane cars of life. Burn it to consecrate a ritual space. Carry it as an herb of protection. Use it in the ritual bath and chalice. Tradition holds that those who eat sage become immortal in both wisdom and years. Sage is used in wish manifestations and to attract money. Smolder to promote healing and spirituality. Carry to promote wisdom. Use in spells for: Protection; Wisdom; Health; Money and Riches; Spirituality.

Milk Thistle- A Potent Liver Protector.  Ancient herbalists recognized the herb’s value as a liver tonic.  It was also used for jaundice, varicose veins, and kidney problems.    Today, Milk Thistle is used as a liver protector, used against hepatitis, mushroom poisoning, cirrhosis, drug-induced liver damage, toxin-induced liver damage and diabetes.  Parts used are the seeds.  Magickal properties are:  An herb of protection and vitality. A bowlful placed in a room strengthens the spirits and renews vitality. One may be carried for added strength and energy. They offer protection when grown in the garden or carried in the pocket. Throwing them into a fire will deflect lightning away from your home. Wearing a garment made from thistle will break any spell. Poppets are also stuffed with thistle to break spells. Use in healing spells and for depression. It is said that when a man carries one he becomes a better lover. A method of calling spirits is to boil some thistle. After removing it from the heat, be seated next to the bowl and begin meditating. As the steam rises, so will your questions and their answers will be heard.

This month’s blends [extra things to do with Orange this year]

Stomach massage oil blend for obesity

Sweet Orange oil x10 drops

Geranium oil x5 drops

Lemon oil x3 drops

Sweet Almond oil x30 ml

Massage onto the stomach muscles, then massage under the knees, in circular movements and around the ankles. Drink 3 glasses of water the same day and aim for a small walk to the shops or up and down the street/block. Return home and do the massage again, meditate then sleep.

Do this whenever you feel the need to.

Child’s sleep blend

10 ml Grapeseed oil

3 drops of Sweet Orange oil

Massage at the back of the child’s ears, then onto the temples of the face. You may want to massage the sides of the neck as well. Or if your worried about the child touching and in-taking the oil, then add this blend to an oil burner and blow out the candle before you leave the room.

Meditation blend and sun meditation

Sweet Almond oil x 20ml

Sweet Orange oil x 4 drops

Lavender oil x2 drops

Place the mixed oil onto the wrists and rub in, then the ear lobes. Draw a pentacle on the top of the forehead. Before the meditation feel the heat coming from your hands as you sit in mediation position. Turn your hands over so they are just above your knees, [palms down] meditate the energy into yourself, thinking how far you’ve already come in life and in magic. When ready to begin place your hands upon your knees, relax your back, close your eyes and breathe. Imagine the heat as an Orange-Yellow flame energy that has penetrated into your soul [for the better]. It can expand because you do. Imagine it swirling toward your solar plexus, and circling it with power, purification and protection. Focus on your breathing. Feel the sun’s heat upon your skin. Take in it’s magnificent glow; it warms and comforts you. Breathe, thinking about the wonders of the universe for a while, as you experience this alone time.

When you are ready, remember the sounds, noises and smells around you. Open your eyes.

If you have spare oil, place it in a dark bottle/dark cool place to use again when you need it.

Anti-[bad] funk oil and incantation [when feeling lower than usual]

The oil blend~

5 drops of Orange oil [Or a substituted oil]

10 ml of Sweet Almond oil

5 ml of Olive oil

“I begin anew, I wipe the slate,

May I soon again, find my fate,

For, it is never too late,

Even when I have passed the gate!”

Cold and flu blend

Rapeseed/Sweet Almond or Sunflower oil x 25 ml

Lime oil x5 drops

Sweet Orange oil x7 drops

Rose oil x5 drops

Rub on your chest area, throat, sides of the neck, top of the back, lower back and the back of the hands and the wrists. If you feel nauseas, sniff your wrists from time to time. This blend also works well, in a bowl of hot water… place a towel over your head and breathe in the oils. Or, use them in a foot bath.

Colour therapy [using Orange]

Using colour therapy can also help you feel happier. Try using the colour orange, see the improvements…If you don’t usually use Orange, then you may feel the effects more than someone who sees Orange all the time. [The same way someone who doesn’t drink alcohol can feel the affects sooner]. Try Orange curtains, nail polish, sandals, sunglasses, hats, in your clothing, Amber jewellery, in meditations, Orange coloured crystals, shakes and juices, underwear, hair accessories, bath products…and any other ways you can think of. I’m not saying go and blow a whole load of cash on unnecessary things, but incorporating the colour into your life can help your self esteem. Don’t believe me? Think about what you feel when you smell an Orange.

We generally, from a young age associate objects and colour with smell. Personally, for example I love the smell of the sea, it brings back lovely memories for me. I dislike any very floral smells, like Geranium or Sweet pea…it doesn’t help that I have hay fever, but I guess I have always associated flower scents with my hay fever and constant sneezing, which annoys me. It’s the same when it comes to essential oils, one great tip [so you don’t end up spending a fortune on oils] would be to think about what smells you like. If you love Lemons and the things you associate with that scent, then your more than likely to enjoy the smell of Lemon essential oil. Sometimes this doesn’t always follow, but it’s a good direction to go by when gathering oils. Plus over time, you may come to like a smell more than you previously did. I used to dislike Lavender, then I read up about it some more. Years later I had dreams of ancestors planting it with me, and found myself warming to it. I began to plant Lavender, and when I breathed in the plant I went back to a dream like place where I was with my loved ones. I currently have 3 lavender plants in the back garden…If I could I’d have a whole garden full of it, now.

Thanks for reading,

Blessed be.

Hally’s Hints

Energetic Balance Within

Energy is fundamental to each and everyone one of us. Some believe there is but one type which can be manipulated and converted and others believe that the energy within us is derived from a central location and through different reasons becomes segregated, disjointed, separated and exists within pockets, usually within the vicinity of a chakra and over years can create behaviour that is aligned to this segregation of energy.

After comprehensive research, experimentation and many hours exploring the affects of energy, its uses and how far energy can be used it has become evident and extremely clear that the energy within the human body that is generated by the life force is but one part of the bigger equation. It is one part of the collective and even this one part plays an integral role in alignment or being true to oneself; which in turn enables a pure connection to the collective or Source/the universe.

The point of understanding energies is all good and fine but what does this mean to each person. What is the point of having this information if it cannot benefit each person on a day to day basis? This is where the role of energy becomes interesting…

At some point most people have felt the energetic field of another person or for some there is this sensation of feeling discomfort when a person comes too close. This is called walking into (or touching) your auric fields. However, when this is done by someone that is energetically (and chemically) aligned it has a warming and inviting affect. Some call what falls lust, however, it is actually an energetic response inspired by an emotional reaction. Not particularly romantic but powerful all the same.

As each person has this ability one thing that has become very clear over the years is that this energy is not maintained and embraced internally. More often than not it is released to another person or even several people leaving that person depleted. There are variations to this being that some can drain some of this energy for themselves because they are also lacking energy. This has multiple variations and extents. For the purpose of this article it will be kept to the light and practical version. This is being unaware that their energy is depleted because they too have been releasing their energy to others and need to gain more energy to exist harmoniously.

However, whilst each person does this it also means that when taking someone’s energy it is taking their “stuff” in simple terms. In other words if they are of a negative nature, have negative emotions hindering them in that moment and so forth. By “ingesting” this kind of energy and becoming the person’s energy it can convert that person into becoming negative. An example is going out to a party or market and coming back completely negative or depressed without any particular reason. Often this feeling is associated with not feeling like themselves and can be unnaturally defensive.

So, the secret, which really isn’t a secret, in all of this is to retain the individual energy of the person and still connecting to others by energetic connection not energy release. There is a big difference. By maintaining energetic balance it enables to maintain health, vitality, harmony in emotions and generally a happy disposition.

The first thing to retain the energy is to be aware if it is being released, such as the feeling of depleted energy being a common occurrence. Simple exercises such as grounding, keeping the home energetically clean; washing hands after touching someone that isn’t of the same nature is a good start. Then it is looking at why this energy is being released. What is being gained by not keeping this energy within? Is it to connect, fit in or be accepted? If this is the case there are ways to do this without losing energy.

Energy is integral to each and every person. This in itself indicates that each and every person can and will connect if it is so desired by both parties. With this in mind the journey into Self to regain energetic balance and harmony is less threatening because knowing one is not alone can sometimes make a big difference.

Be energetically balanced to regain, revitalise and reap the empowering sensation of being you completely.

The Magical Record

September, 2012

Your Magical Record is the most magical tool you have in your whole magick arsenal. When you are

studying, meditating, doing a ceremony, and changing write in your Magical Record. This will reflect

your thoughts. Every thought is magick, ideas manifest and that is magick within itself. The magician

must learn to control himself and realize the flow of the world by reflecting at the end of his day; some

magical records have contributed to the occult records and turned into a science. The writing in the

Magical Records show how magick is even revealed in the smallest of revelations in life, these texts

will help you define your own definition of magick.

The concept of the Magical Record is beyond the realms of writing to release stress and phases into the

realm of the spiritual. The records of the magician are the greatest tool due to the fact it reflects the

Great Work of the Magician. The magician will see the ins and outs of his/her ceremonies in his

personal practices. The Rituals will be more in delved with who he/she is as a person. The studies of

the mystic will begin to show in the works of the magician as the results are shown more over time.

The idea of magick is True Will that lead to results. The Magick record teaches us that results have no

time table as they could manifest in minutes to years. The point of magick is shown for singular intent

the magician wishes to come true.

The Magical Record is merely made for focus to the magus. The man who can make things happen in

the mundane through the very manifestation of his Will shall be shown in his Magical Record. The

Templi XVIII challenges the Magician to make the Magical Record as detailed as possible as he/she

writes. The more specific you can detail your works get, the more precise you can find what works for

you in the process of helping you know yourself. The compensation for the time you add to your

Magical Record will be the results of self-exploration; the Self is the most important aspect of magick,

but not in a selfish way.

The reason magical techniques that we still utilize today were well documented in Grimoires, of

Shadows, and Magical Diaries. A few famous writings are the Dr John Dee Writings, The Book of

Abramelin, the Book of Law, the Clavis Salamonis (Keys of Solomon), and hundreds of other writings

that support the magical systems we have till this very day. There is a sense of pride these grimoires

hold for the magick of future generations is a great elaboration of our history. The works of some of the

greatest minds have been well documented to sustain the evolution of magick and open the minds other

magicians for generations.

These works of the Magical Record go past pride, ego, and the physical realm into a new world of

thinking with philosophy and magick. You can show your works to anyone you want without refrain,

then you have those who are more secretive to their works. Hold true to yourself in all your actions and

thoughts, when you are true to the Magical Record you are true to yourself and the improvement of
