Book Review – Crystal Skulls: Ancient Tools for Peace, Knowledge and Enlightenment

Published by Weiser Books, and written by Judy Hall, this 194 page book explores the origin, lore and metaphysical properties of crystal skulls in two parts. In the first part of the book the author covers the controversy pertaining to the authenticity (or lack there of) of when these crystalline structures were created, carved or machined. She says it best when she states, “But, as has been said, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” Then she continues by saying, “In talking about crystal skulls, departures from “truth” inevitably occur. But what is truth? Just because the origins of a skull are dubious does not invalidate people’s subsequent experiences.” Judy Hall goes on to talk about her own experiences with crystal skulls, as well as details of famous or rather infamous skulls, the mythology and the people who collect them, also known as Skull keepers, and the people who carve them.

Part II is all about how to work with your crystal skulls. Hall begins with a chapter on how to choose your crystal skull and even contains a “buyer beware” section. As a newbie to crystal skulls I appreciate the author including this little part in her book. The second half of the book continues on with chapters on how to cleanse, activate, communicate, heal with and care for your crystal skulls. The author rounds off the book by including a crystal directory and an invaluable resource of reputable crystal skull suppliers.

I honestly wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book, as I’ve always viewed crystal skulls as kind of macabre. Not that I thought any different of people who had them, they just weren’t for me. But I can now say my interest has been peaked. I’ve consciously put it out to the Universe that I’m interested in working with crystal skulls, so now I will wait patiently until the right one finds me. That aside, I felt this book was well written and I loved that the author included her own personal experiences. Though it’s a short 194 pages, this book packs a wealth of information in it, enough to get a newbie started and maybe some unknown lore for the experienced skull keeper to find interesting as well.

Crystal Prescriptions: The A-Z to Over 1,200 Symptoms and Their Healing Crystals by Judy Hall

Published by O books, written by Judy Hall, this 171 page book is divided into two parts.

Part 1 touches on differing subjects that include Crystal Know How and Crystals for Health.

Crystal Know How is set up somewhat like a FAQ on how to use the books directory and Judy Hall even includes a section on the technique that she uses to choose the crystal or crystals that are right for her.

In Crystals for Health the author explains why crystals have an important role in disease and keeping you healthy by stating, “Crystal healing is a gentle and non-invasive process that creates balance on all levels, and one that can provide support to the body’s own internal healing systems.” I found that each chapter in Part 1 had pertinent information valuable to any crystal healer.

Part 2 is set up much like an encyclopedia with an array of ailments and disease’s and a list of corresponding crystals.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this book has a symptom based directory vs. the usual crystal based directory. With an easy to follow reference guide this book would make a helpful addition to any experienced crystal user.

Though the author claims that this book is for beginning and experienced healers alike, in my opinion I would suggest that a novice pair this book with Judith Hall’s Crystal Bible Volumes I, II and III. My reason behind this is because this book does not have correlating pictures of the crystals to help a beginner visually identify the minerals suggested, otherwise I do believe this book would make a nice addition to anyone’s crystal knowledge or crystal healing collection.

Oh crystals, how I love you so. Where and how do I even begin to describe my connection with them. You know that feeling you get with an animal, when you squeeze them and nuzzle your nose into them, and your whole body just resonates with love? Well that’s me with crystals and minerals, I just have to be a little more careful because rocks aren’t so furry and squishy! Seriously though, when I walk into a crystal shop or mineral and gem show I am like a kid in a candy store. When I find crystals or stones that call to me, I immediately want to hug them. I’m not sure why, other than to say that I feel so much love emanating from them that my first instinct is to hold them close. Being surrounded by crystals is my true happy place, they are what grounds me, as they should since they are from the earth; true gifts from Gaia and I honor them as such.

Crystals and minerals aren’t just beautiful gifts from the earth, no, they’re multifaceted (pun intended). Not only do they bring people joy, these beauties have been used as healing tools for centuries. It wasn’t until I became a Solitary Eclectic Witch that I learned of their metaphysical properties, which only transcended my love for them.

My dad, who was a rock hound in his younger years, is the reason for my connection with these earthy treasures. I can remember combing river beds and asking my dad what to look for. He would just say, “Sis, pick up whatever rock looks pretty to you.” That has always stuck with me, and I’m happy to say that I’ve done exactly that. I love all types of crystals and minerals, from the rough to the highly polished. I will say that other than spending time with my family, nothing makes me smile more than finding a beautiful mineral shining up to me from either a river/creek bed, a sandy beach, a rock and gem show or in my dad’s rock garden.

I have memories of my dad cutting and polishing some of his finds. He also made some beautiful pieces of jewelry for my mom. Even when he wasn’t able to rock hound anymore or to even leave the bed in his later years, he still found ways to buy stones, gems and crystals for me to put to use in my own jewelry creations or to just place in my sacred spaces. I didn’t get into jewelry making until I was in my thirties, but when I did he was my greatest supporter. He’d buy some faceted gems and honored me by asking if I would make my mom something special.

My dad journeyed to Summerland a year ago and there are so many things I miss about our daily interactions. I feel the loss especially when I find a stone or I’ve thought of a jewelry design that I think he’d really love. I often still talk to him as if he were standing next to me and sometimes I think I can hear him laugh, or feel him nod in approval. I will forever be grateful to him for introducing me to these earthy gifts but most of all I’m thankful to have shared that love with him.

Pocket Stones

Recently I visited a local crystal shop because I wanted some small crystals just for carrying in my pockets. I knew that I was going to purchase at least three pieces and that one would be a small piece of Black Tourmaline (also known as Schorl) for grounding and protection. I just wasn’t sure what the other two would be. As I walked around I found myself drawn to Dumortierite. This calming blue stone is known to raise spiritual awareness and can act as an amplifier for psychic abilities. For the third stone I chose a teal blue Fluorite for its abilities to ground, protect, clear chakras and it can also assist in organization and enhancing spiritual connections.

Excited to have my pocket stones I headed to the cash register when I was pulled to a tray of Kunzites. These crystals are a lovely soft pink/lavender in color. They are known for their aid in emotional healing and ability to open your heart to Divine Love. I then got the feeling that I needed to be on the search for heart healing stones to help me after the loss of my dad. I have plenty of Rose Quartz so the crystals that I would be purchasing were going to be pieces that I didn’t already have. I started to make my way around the tables, holding my left hand over the multitude of trays containing various crystals and minerals to see if anything pulled at me. I was surprised when Tangerine Quartz was the next to get my attention because it’s not known as a heart healer. It’s commonly known for aiding in passion and sexuality as well as having the ability to assist in creativity. I guess, now that I think about it, dad was always big on me being creative, so maybe it wasn’t such a surprise after all. As I continued on my search for the final stone, a pink Agate found its way to me. Pink Agates aid in healing the heart of old pains and can give you a sense of calmness and security. I now have three stones to carry in each of my front pockets and I can say that I feel a sense of peace for the first time since my dad has left this earthly plane.

I like to carry my stones loose in my pocket so they are easily accessible, but by carrying them like this there is a chance that they will chip with the friction. If this worries you feel free to put them in little pouches like organza bags, or some other tiny pouch. Most metaphysical shops sell them, but if your crafty why not make one? I like the thought of making one because it would be your energy surrounding your crystals. If you’re not crafty don’t worry, just buy a pre-made one and infuse your own energy into it.

I view pocket stones much like worry stones, for me just touching them brings calmness and makes me feel connected and grounded. Rolling then through my fingers takes me almost to a meditative state. You can purchase stones or crystals for their metaphysical properties or choose them for their beauty or even better yet, choose the ones that choose you!

Shiva Lingam

Gathered from a holy site on the Narmada River in India, these sacred stones pack quite a bit of energy. Though these stones are a symbol of the Hindu God Shiva they also represent both masculine (the phallic shape) and feminine (the yoni markings) energies, because of this they can be used to activate kundalini energy. Not only can they intensify vitality within the body, they are known to raise the pranic energy as well.

It’s been said that Shiva Lingams represent the center axis of life, connecting earth with the universe. Known as the stone of insight, lingams facilitate releasing all that you’ve outgrown by ridding oneself of old habits and beliefs clearing the way for spiritual growth. They resonate with all chakras and elements and are powerful enough to stimulate the energy system of the entire body, aiding in overall improvement of the mind, body and spirit.

Lingams are a symbol of the perfect union and balance of the male and female forms within a sacred shape and object that is one. For me, after working with Shiva Lingams they’ve become a symbol of love, creating a sense of peace and love within myself. I only have a handful of these wondrous stones, and though they’re not flashy or sparkly they are beautiful nonetheless, and they emanate a considerable amount of energy. Take some time to meditate with this crystalline structure, better yet, place it under your pillow and allow this powerful stone to speak, energize and heal you.

Petrified Wood

Also known as Agatized or Fossilized Wood, Petrified wood in all actuality is Quartz and possesses some wonderful healing energies. Once rooted deep within the earth, these crystalline structures have a strong Gaia connection plus grounding and ancestral healing energies. Additional attributes that I have felt from working with these crystals is a fortified strength and a type of wisdom that can only come from something that was and is so deeply connected to the Earth. This peaceful stone is especially good to work with when you have inner turbulence and need to regain or re-establish some inner peace and balance.

Since my dad was a rockhound, Petrified wood was plentiful in my dads rock collection. He collected them from the many trips he made to Canada, Montana, Washington, Idaho and Oregon. A couple of my favorites are the Agatized Limb Cast that is a translucent milky green color and a near black one that has a bit of druzy in it. Honestly I love all Petrified Wood but those are just my favorites because they’re not the typical pieces that you see.

The history these beautiful gems hold and are willing to share with anyone that is called to work with them is genuinely something to behold. To establish a deeper connection with these crystalline structures, sit with them in quiet meditation and ask what type of earthly wisdom they want to share with you. Be sure to take in the grounding strength they have to offer, and allow their Gaian energies to envelope you in a warm loving motherly hug.
