Book Review: Protection and Reversal Magick – A Witch’s Defense Manual by Jason Miller

Protection and Reversal Magick

A Witch’s Defense Manual

by Jason Miller

224 pages

In the last chapter Mr. Miller writes something interesting about magickal, psychic and spiritual attacks: he states that attacks are happening every day to everyone. They are being launched not only by offended spirits and malicious magicians, but major corporations and political parties. He asks: “Where does a magical seal, a binding, end and a corporate logo start? Where does the use of neuro-linguistics programming in sales and in the use of sorceress bindings begin?” Mr. Miller says that if you haven’t thought about this as magic, then think again.

Mr. Miller dedicates this book more to Hecate than he does any other deity. He wrote this book as an attempt to step beyond the “101’s” that seem to fill the shelves these days. This book is on defensive witchcraft, not Wicca.

There are chapters in this book on daily practices, personal protection and protection of the home. Chapter 6 of this book covers spirit guardians and servitors, this is an interesting chapter. I’m going to quote the author here, because I happen to agree with what he says about spirit guardians and servitors. Mr. Miller wrote: “It follows that if you treat the spirit as a separate entity that you are summoning, you will be able to get more worked up over the process delete than if you go into it as some psychological trick, and thus achieve greater success, no matter what the spirits true nature.”

I would recommend this book for someone who is wondering if they are under spiritual attack, wanting to delve deeper into reversal encounter magic, or who is looking for protection for their home. The rituals that Mr. Miller includes in this book are complete and easy to follow along with. It is also easy to come by a lot of the ingredients that are included in the rituals and the spells. I do feel that this is a book above the beginner level that are on the shelves today. But, even if this is your first book into Protective and Reversal Magick, Mr. Miller has made it easy to understand.

Retha’s Crystal Reflections

Protection Stones

This month I think is an appropriate time to discuss protecting yourself, your aura & your space. You can use many tools to remove negative energy from your environment, such as salt, smudge, herbs etc, but my favorite way is with crystal allies of course!

There are tons of crystals we could discuss but for lengths sake we will talk about my top 10 protection stones. They are not in any order, I encourage you to work with or wear as many of these amazing stones as you can!

Smoky Quartz: Smoky quartz is one of my favorite stones for many reasons, but for wearing as a protection amulet it is my go to. I try to wear it every single day. It not only absorbs any negative energy around you, it also transmute that energy. So its such an important tool we have been given by mama Gaia. I recommend smoky quartz for wearing and for placing inside the front entrance to your home. It will absorb any negative energy ickys being brought inside your space from all who enter. It doesn’t need to be a huge specimen, a simple smoky quartz tumble is perfect. It’s also a master healer and when placed on the body will remove toxic energies, neutralize negativity and infuse the body with healing white light. It also relieves painful emotions. I have personally seen how powerful this crystal is and can’t recommend a stone any higher.

Black Tourmaline: Black tourmaline is kinda the big gun of protection stones. It’s very heavy and strong. It removes negative energy within a person or a space.  I prefer black tourmaline buried on the four corners of the property lines, or placed in the four corners of the home. It’s also the perfect stone for protection in your vehicle as it protects from theft. I keep a black tourmaline pendant hanging from my rear view mirror. It cleanses, purifies and transforms dense energy into a lighter vibration. It balances, harmonizes and protects all chakras.  It’s also another great one to wear on your body as jewelry.

Black Tourmaline Rutile: This is simply black tourmaline bars within a quartz matrix. Quartz is the ultimate magnification stone, so this is black tourmaline magnified. Black rutile cleanses and energizes the aura. It draws off negative energies and disease and helps one let go of the past. It also gives protection from the ill thoughts of others. I also love the look of black tourmaline rutile, it’s so neat looking. So this is a favorite in jewelry pieces.

Garnet: Garnet is to me gentle loving protection, and I keep a huge piece of it on my coffee table at all times. It’s to me protection of the emotions and mind. If I’m feeling stressed or on edge this is the stone I turn to for comfort & safety. It’s a talisman of protection and unyielding strength. It increases willpower and resistance to all things negative. It’s a spiritual stone of psychic protection. One of my favorite stones to wear as jewelry.

Black Onyx: Black Onyx is stone that absorbs, transforms and prevents the drain of personal energy. It helps provide emotional and physical strength when support is needed during stressful, confusing or tumultuous times. It’s a good stone for grief. It also protects you from psychic attack and guards the wearer from the evil eye.

Black Kyanite: Black Kyanite is a stone that instantly upon contact clears anything of negative energy. It also never needs to be cleansed. It’s a great stone to keep on hand, if you get a new stone or piece of jewelry you can just touch the black kyanite to it and its clear & ready to go. So simple! I also keep a blade of black kyanite with my tarot & oracle cards. When i pull them out to use them I always place my black kyanite on top for a minute before I shuffle. Black Kyanite clears all energy blockages and imbalances within the chakras. It aligns, grounds and centers. It elevates the level of good vibrations within the energy field. It repairs tears or holes when placed upon the chakra points with its healing energy. Obviously wearing this stone will keep you clean and clear of any unwanted energies as well. Its a spectacular stone!

Aegirine: This is a rarer more expensive stone but well worth the trouble to find. Its claim to fame and what makes this stone unique is its ability to act as a shield that guards the aura, all while assisting the wearer to discover their courage and confidence in refining their power and strength. It’s known as a “guardian harmonizer”. It removes negative cords and energy attachments within the auric field. It also protects from electromagnetic smog.

Obsidian: Obsidian is strongly protective and forms a shield against negativity. It blocks psychic attacks and absorbs negative energy from the environment. It draws out mental stress and tension. It’s a cleaner of psychic smog created in your aura. Obsidian is an auric cleanser. Specifically golden sheen or silver sheen obsidian can be used as a “bar of soap” and run along the entire body making back and forth motions like you are scrubbing away all negativity from your auric field.

Selenite: Selenite is a beautiful, easy to find and inexpensive crystal that u can use to clear other stones, clear a space, open ritual circle or sacred space and clear yourself. It has an angelic feeling to me. Pure white light. It looks like it’s literally glowing sometimes. Selenite resonates at higher frequencies. Used for undoing the effects of negative emotions on one’s mind and body. Placing on the body it removes unwanted or negative energies.  A great beginner stone as well. I love a flat piece of selenite or charging plate that you can place smaller stones or your jewelry on to clear.

Shungite: Shungite is a detoxifier and a cleanser. It kills and devours anything that harms people and then restores what is good. Its been called “miracle stone” and “stone of life”. It has been used for water purification since ancient Rome. It’s also a good stone to protect yourself from harmful EMF’s. I keep a Shungite pyramid in front of my tv for this purpose. It’s also a perfect stone to wear, especially if you are around a lot of different energies in the workplace, such as hospitals and trauma centers. Shungite keeps you from picking up negative and unwanted energy from others and the environment.

I hope this is a useful brief explanation of some helpful crystals to work with for whatever type of protection you are needing. These are all staples in my crystal collection and I can’t imagine doing without them!

On another note, if you are looking to start gridding, or in the market for crystal grids, I encourage you to read my three grid reviews/interviews that are in this months content here on Pagan Pages. Grids for all price points and different materials. Check it out! Thanks for stopping by this month and I hope you will come back next month!

Have a blessed Samhain!

Tea Time Reviews & Conversations with the Fair One

August, 2018

Welcome to our newest review column! I’m the Fair One and I’m pleased to bring you wonderful products from Pagan Owned businesses you may not have heard of, but SHOULD!

I will inform you about the wonderful product I will be reviewing, then next, the business owner and I have a great conversation about their shop, products, ideas, and more. So sit back, have a nice cup of tea with me and let’s open the door to our first shop!

Persephone’s herbal learning box

This month, over a nice cup of hot brew I am opening up the from Persephone’s herbal shop. The box itself is lovely, with a great message on the side.

A nice reminder to us all!

Upon opening the box the first thing you see is bags of herbs!!! Three, nice size bags, of that month’s herb, which is Mullien, in two different forms.

You get 2 bags of appox. 0.7 oz of Mullein Leaf and 1 bag of appox. 1.1 oz Mull-ein Comfort which is a mixture of a few herbs with Mullein and is a tea. The back of the packages tells you the ingredients in each bag and gives you any warnings or instructions that are necessary. You, also, receive 2 packets of Mullein seeds with approx. 200 seeds in each. Last, a high gloss magazine of Recipes, History, & More all about Mullein.

The packages of herbs are air tight sealed to ensure freshness. The tea, is delicious. Perfect for this column! The magazine quality is amazing. There are articles are awesome. It teaches you how to sow your seeds. The pictures of Mullein are beautiful. It is a great keepsake to have to always remember what the herb does and how to use it.

I was blown away by this product. I could not wait to have a conversation with Christina, co-Shop Owner of Persephone’s with her husband Jared. My Speech is in bold black and Christina’s is in green bold.

Hello Christina!!

It is such a pleasure to meet you. I was very excited to receive your herbal learning box!

The pleasure is mine!  Jared and I were excited to hear that you wanted to learn about our box and share your experience with your followers!  PaganPages.Org is amazing!!

Until now, I haven’t had any sort of formal way to learn herbs other than looking them up in my books or on the internet. You know you research a keyword here or there or look up lists now and then for this or that, but you don’t truly STUDY herbs that way I feel. It’s usually a hurried look up for a spell or ritual. A knowledge that you retain is something that a lot of us Witches are looking for. I have looked into courses, but they can run you a lot of money and they do not come with any supplies. I think you are providing with your herbal learning box, an affordable, amazing way to learn herbal healing & magick. How did you come up with the idea for a herbal learning box?

Jared and I both grew up around natural remedies and have always appreciated traditional healing methods. Though we appreciate and respect the role modern medicine plays in today’s society, we know it isn’t always the best or only solution.  We had wanted to open an herb store here locally in Memphis and be a reliable source for herbs, spices, and teas. But we figured it would be best to start online due to the costs that are endured with a brick and mortar. As we knew that the knowledge we grew up with wouldn’t be enough of credentials into today’s world, we decided to enroll in an herbal school.  We aren’t finished with it, honestly, but we’ve already learned so much more on top of everything else we grew up with and learned through life.  And that’s when we realized that there isn’t much out there that offers exactly as you said – the education with the supplies.  So Jared came to me one day and was like, “What do you think about subscription boxes?!”  And that’s where we started!

Your box is a beautiful mix of the Magickal and the Mundane, with a tale that speaks of a tea for a spell and correspondences and an article of a cure for a breathing ailment. Your Booklet is very complete and I am very impressed by it. It’s made of superior quality. The pictures are a high resolution and beautiful. You capture the herb & its flower in so many amazing lights. It’s breathtaking.

I wish I could say I took them all, but I’m blessed with the internet and paying for the rights to use them.  The magazine is my pride and joy and I have so much fun working with it every month. It’s always stressful because I never want it to be a repeat. I always want it to be something you’re excited to thumb through, and always aim to make it educational for all ages – that’s the #1 goal. Always.  While we strive to keep religion and faith out of the pages as a focus, there are many ways it is brought in – mostly through historical and cultural information. I come from a magickal background, even though Jared doesn’t, and we feel that no matter which side of the hedge you stand on understanding the core values of the flora around us is key to a healthier lifestyle – mundane or magickal.

You have guest writers in your booklet who write the articles and include a bio and picture of them. How do you find your authors? The articles are each unique from each other and informative! Giving you different views on the herb.

We’ve had a few different writers over the 1.5 years we’ve been doing this. To tell you a secret, most have been personal friends that come from a magickal background.  But part of the agreement all writers make is that it must be non-magickal focused.  We love out magickal subscribers and supporters, but we aren’t here to cater to one specific group.  Herbs and their secrets are important to everyone and we don’t want something faith or religious based to scare away people who could benefit from this knowledge.  All of our writers understand this, and usually follow up with something along the lines of “that’s a great way of looking at it and I can appreciate that!”

I have to tell you, the word search is a genius way to have us memorize important key words about the herbs!! I loved that you added that touch of fun activity into the booklet!

The word search came about as an idea to get kids involved actually.  A fun and simple way to learn the key focus points of a word.  And I hope as a momma-to-be that if my child was doing it and they didn’t know a word, they’d ask me and it could be even more of an educational experience – not just about the herb of the month, but also about general knowledge of life. We are toying with ideas of coloring pages or putting together a coloring book… but we’ll see.

This is a Monthly Subscription Box? How do you choose what herb you will focus on each month? Is there a certain way you choose what to put in the boxes each month? This month you include 2 packages of leaves, 2 packages of seeds, and a lovely tea. Do you always include so much?

Hahaha.. That’s a tricky question.  We plan months in advance.  The writers always have a minimum of a month to write.  They are submitting articles for a magazine a month before the box goes out.  Example: We just finished with the magazine that’ll go out in the August box and they’re writing articles now for the September box!  So it can get confusing.  We actually have a secret lair with the void of Facebook where we brainstorm ideas.  Herbs are chosen based on a few things.  #1 is always whether it is poisonous or not.  Because we have the tea, we cannot use something like belladonna or hemlock in a box. I’d love to as our deadly flora friends are so very important to learn about, but we can’t morally, ethically, or legally supply people with these things.  After that we have to make sure that seeds and herbs can be sourced from reliable and ethical vendors at costs that are beneficial for everyone.  While we do strive to give subscribers the best possible, we can’t go into debt doing so.  I can admit there are many months we still go deep into our own pockets simply because we can’t resist giving everyone the best possible.  Our most expensive month was cinnamon and that’s because of the seeds had to be imported in from solid vendors overseas and we had to rush deliver them due to the very short lifespan of the seed.  We try to avoid situations like that, though, because if someone didn’t open their box timely and plant their seeds right then – they lost their germination window.  And that isn’t the experience we’re looking to provide.

We have 4 boxes.  There’s the Seedling Box, the Herb and Spice Box, the Tea Time Box, and the Full Harvest Box.  The Seedling has the magazine and the seed packets every month, whereas the Herb and Spice will have magazine and bags of herbs. Tea Time is the magazine with a bag of tea, leaving the Full Harvest subscribers enjoying the full bounty of all of it.

You work really hard on your herbal learning boxes and it shows!!! Your shop Persephone’s hosts your boxes, yes? Can you tell us more about your shop and what other items and services you provide?

The subscription boxes are the main focus, but you’re right – not everything we do. Now that our new site is up (and ever so amazingly beautiful thanks to Jared’s handiwork) we have herbs, seeds, and teas coming into the shop also.  Tea blends that are found in the boxes will not be available to the public until after the subscribers have received their boxes first.  We look at it as a way to let subscribers enjoy that first sip of satisfaction for their subscription to the boxes.  We also have our body care line, Kora’s Gift. Kora’s Gift includes lip balms, lotions, soaps, an amazing eye cream, and pretty much anything you can think of! Haha..Jared is always brainstorming more things to work with and provide people with to help bring them back to what nature has to offer instead relying so much on chemicals and ingredients that aren’t safe for you. Kora’s Gift is Jared’s baby – not even going to dispute that.  He’s the math and science brain needed to formulate everything properly.  He will stew over formulas for weeks to ensure that he can always use natural products, get ratios right with each ingredient while ensuring they do what is needed for the end goal.  I can’t do it. As we say, he’s the brain and I make it look pretty, as I do all the label and packaging designs.  Only thing I can’t take credit for design-wise is that beautiful box the subscriptions are shipped in.  I couldn’t top Jared’s design if I tried!  But when he came to me with it, I looked at it like the wheel – can’t reinvent something if it isn’t broken and doesn’t need to be fixed.  We are bringing in eCourses in the very near future, also.  We’ll have courses we put together as well as guest teachers!  We’re excited about this but we’re making sure the foundation of the online system is solid first before we release to the public. I’m giddy over it, though!

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me. I really appreciate getting to know you and your shop. I have really enjoyed Persephone’s herbal learning box and Suggest it to anyone and everyone who would like to learn about herbs, not just Witches. It is a fantastic, hands-on way to not only fleetingly learn but to actually memorize and take in great information! Thank you for creating your herbal learning box and sharing it with us!

And we thank you for this opportunity!  We’re so happy to know you enjoyed everything!  We enjoy doing it and it makes all the struggles and headaches endured well worth it knowing everything likes what they receive.  We have so much we want to do and offer because we love herbs and the natural world so much but it’s a baby step process of making sure that whatever we do offer is the best quality for you guys – be it supplies or education.  This is a passion of ours and we just want to keep doing it for as long as you guys want us to! Thank you again for this experience!

Wow, I have to thank Christina for this great interview! Now that was a great conversation with an awesome woman, new momma & business owner. Jared is a genius with products & Christina is a business whiz! What they have done is brilliant for us! This has certainly been the best way I have fond to learn about herbs. I am looking forward to their upcoming eCourses and I encourage our readers to look into their shop, upcoming eCourses, as well as the Subscription Boxes. This has been the most knowledgeable and affordable way to learn that I have found. The herb & spice boxes start at $13 a month. While the seedling sachet starts at $12 a month. I stand behind Persephone’s as a quality company.

Here is a Picture of everything that was in my box this month (minus the cat):

Christina has sent information and correspondences on Mullein for our readers!! Thank you, Christina, for everything!!!!

Mullein

Planets: Mercury, Saturn

Element: Fire

Nature: Feminine

Gods, Goddess, & Heroes: Jupiter, Hecate, Circe, Odysseus, St. Fiacre. Given the folklore and alternative names for this plant, I suspect you could probably associated with assorted crone deities and death deities as well.

Festival: Samhain, Midsummer

Add the flowers to a recipe for a yellow magical ink – perhaps steeped in vodka with tumeric and saffron heated with frankincense or pine resin. Use for drawing prosperity sigils, sigils of the sun, wealth, success, and strength. Witches can use the soft leaves soaked then dried in beeswax or tallow to make a torch for rituals of necromancy.

Mullein is used to see manifestations of spirits, to see into the otherworld, and to commune with the spirits and deities who dwell there. It is used for divination and dream work or a combination of the two (prophetic dreaming).

If making ritual candles of your own you may use Mullein stalks for the wicks or burn a whole stalk as a candle of itself.

Powdered mullein can be used in spells that call for graveyard dirt. It belongs to the crossroads, to Saturn, and to the underworld. It is Hecate’s torch and Lucifer’s staff. It is a key and a door. Mullein resembles a torch with it’s tip covered in bright yellow flowers with orange and red pollen mimicking flames. Perhaps Hecate’s saffron robe was dyed with rich yellow Mullein flowers instead of actual saffron. The flowers were once used in ancient Roman dyes and pigments.

In Indian lore, mullein is considered a sure safe guard against evil spirits and magic.

The little fuzzy hairs which cover every inch of a mullein plant are very irritating to the skin and mucus membranes. Use care when collecting, and always strain liquids with mullein in them very well to remove the little hairs before ingesting. Never smoke mullein without a filter! (Not that we are advocating smoking anything). Source: http://www.witchipedia.com/herb:mullein

Mullein was first introduced into the United States in the 1700s when it was used to poison fish in Virginia.

Mullein protects you in your sleep helping to combat both evil spirits and nightmares.

As it helps one to fall asleep when ingested, Mullein makes an excellent tea to encourage prophetic dreams and as an aid in lucid dreaming or astral travel while asleep.

Some people keep a packet of Mullein Leaves under the pillow to Prevent Nightmares.

In Great Britain it was used to help bring back children who had been kidnapped by fairies.

Various Native Americans knew a good thing when they saw it and used this Eurasian native that became naturalized in North America to return people to their right mind. For instance, the Hopi mixed the leaves with osnomodium to be used as a smoke by crazy people and those who had been betwitched. The Navajo wrapped the leaves in a corn husk to be smoked to help a mind return if it was lost, and the Potowatami smudged unconcscious people with the leaves to help them return to consciousness. Consider mullein useful in centering the spirit and add it to the pipe smoked as an aid to astral work.

Others wear the leaves in their shoes or Bathe for 5 days in MULLEIN Tea to engender Courage and Drive Away Enemies and Wild Animals.

Mullein Leaf Powder mixed with Graveyard Dirt also appears in a few old recipes for Goofer Dust. When burned with a mixture of Psychic Vision Incense and Commanding Incense and MULLEIN Smoke is said to be powerful in spells against Enemies.

It is mixed with dill, salt, and fennel and sprinkled around haunted areas to repel malicious spirits or ghosts, and it is a substitution for graveyard dirt in the recipes of various spells.

Mullein can be used to bring clarity and inner light, to help a person stand firm and develop inner strength (think of Mullein’s appearance for a moment – strong, upright central stem, almost represents a backbone really, with the flowers at the top as the head.) It can be good for those who struggle with their conscience – perhaps to help them see whether what they did was right or wrong and how to learn from their mistakes if their choice was wrong.

Mullein is a very good plant for those who feel they have lost their sense of ‘self’, to help them figure out where their boundaries are and develop into the people they are supposed to be. I’d be inclined to give it to those who have gone through a traumatic or life changing experience and who need help processing it all and learning from their experiences.

It protects those who carry it against wild animals.

Apparently if you put it into your shoe it will prevent you from catching a cold.

The dried herb guards against nightmares, evil spirits and negative magic and is added to sachets and charms to hang over doors and windows for these purposes.

It is also used in men’s love magic.

Some think that the Latin name ‘Verbascum’ is a corruption of the original word for beard, ‘barba’, alluding to the wooly appearance of the plant.

The plant was certainly known by the Greeks and Romans – Pliny suggested that figs should be wrapped in Mullein leaves to help them keep fresh for longer.

The stems were used as replacement torches by legionaries and were dipped in wax and used as candles at funerals – this usage continued up until the middle ages.

The flowers were used by Roman women to make a blonde hair wash.

Apparently both Circe and Odysseus used the plant – Circe used it as part of her spells, and Odysseus used it to protect himself from her spells, amusingly enough!

In the Middle Ages, Mullein was grown in monastery gardens as a protection from the devil.

Again, conversely, Mullein was used as candles in witches spells, though if the plant was gathered in a particular set of circumstances – the sun in Virgo and moon in Aries – the plant could be used to guard the bearer against sorcery.

Mullein is an ancient sacred plant that can be used in the midsummer celebrations. Flares are made with the flowering spikes that serve as a representation of the Sun god. Mullein protects against all evil, and in particular, against lightening. However, bringing Mullein into the house for no good reason is said to cause lightening to strike.

Meet the Gods: Bes

Merry meet.

Bes was an Egyptian god who brought comfort and protection to mothers and children. The somewhat comical, somewhat sinister-looking bearded dwarf looks human but is often also portrayed as part animal – generally a lion with a mane and tail, or with wings. He has a plump body, bow legs, prominent genitals and is sticking out his tongue. He is always shown facing forwards, unlike most Egyptian Gods who are shown in profile. On occasion, Bes is wearing a plumed headdress or a crown, and carrying a rattle, drum, tambourine or knife.

Also known as Bisu and Aha, he was a deity and a demonic fighter. A god of war, “he was also a patron of childbirth and the home, and was associated with sexuality, humour, music and dancing,” according to ancientegyptonline.co.uk. “Although he began as a protector of the pharaoh, he became very popular with every day Egyptian people because he protected women and children above all others. He had no temples and there were no priests ordained in his name. However, he was one of the most popular gods of ancient Egypt and was often depicted on household items such as furniture, mirrors and cosmetics containers and applicators as well as magical wands and knives.”

Apparently, he got the name Aha, meaning fighter, because he could kill lions, bears and snakes with his hands. Although labeled a demon, there he was not considered evil, but rather, drove evil spirits away.

Laboring mothers would call on Bes for help. It is said he would stay on after birth to protect and entertain the child, and that when a baby smiled for no apparent reason, it was because Bes was making funny faces for them.

Using dance and music, he would also chase away bad spirits during sex and sleep. That’s why he could be found carved into the legs of beds – to protect people during the night when they were most vulnerable.

Egyptians would put a statue of him near the door to protect their home from evil spirits wanting to cause harm. He appeared on the walls of temples and homes, and was on thousands of amulets and charms, protecting people from the dangers of everyday life such as menacing animals and food going bad.

Bes is the first subject to be identified in early Egyptian tattoos, according to “Tattoo: Symbol and Meanings,” by Jack Watkins.

Performers often had tattoos of Bes because of his association with dancing and music. It is also thought that sacred prostitutes may have had a tattoo of Bes placed near their pubic area in order to prevent venereal diseases, but it is also possible that the tattoos related to fertility,” Watkins wrote.

Bes’ wife, Beset, was the female version of himself. Images of them naked were painted on walls.

Merry part. And merry meet again

The Enchanted Cottage: Magick for the Witch’s Home

November, 2017

To Protect the Witches Home

“We will set to work on that” said Hansel, “and have a good meal. I will eat a bit of the roof, and though, Gretel, canst eat some of the window, it will taste sweet.”

Hansel reached up above, and broke off a little of the roof to try how it tasted, and Gretel leaned against the window and nibbled at the panes. Then a soft voice cried from the room.

“Nibble, nibble gnaw,
Who is nibbling at my little house?”

The children answered,

“The wind, the wind,

From Hansel and Gretel—Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tale

Grimm

The above tale is from one of my favorite fairy tale books. Reading the myth and lore that the Brothers Grimm collected not only brings me comfort during the cold and dark months, I also enjoy unraveling some of the meaning behind the tales. One of the lessons I have learned from Hansel and Gretel is that if you don’t want random children nibbling on your home, you better learn how to set up protective boundaries. If the old witch in the candy coated cottage had installed magical shields around her property, she may not have ended up being cooked in her own oven.

There are many ways one can go about protecting their home from evil and unruly spirits, enemies, and unforeseen forces. It is always best to figure out what shielding magic works best for you but I will share a few methods that I have found to be effective.

Red Brick Dust. A staple in New Orleans Voodoo and Appalachian Hoodoo, Red Brick Dust is my go to formula for most protective magic. Easy to find on the internet and fairly easy to make, this magical powder is made from the grindings of a red brick. The trick is finding a brick that is red throughout, they can be difficult to find. To use, just sprinkle across your doorways and window seals. If feeling the need for extra protection the dust can be sprinkled around the perimeter of you house.

Gargoyles. Found on Egyptian and Greek temples and many churches, the grotesque gargoyle started out as a water spout. Now they can be found everywhere as a decorative feature on many homes and businesses. I have found these creatures to be fiercely protective and have a few around my home. They not only defend my home from unwanted entities, they also have been known to protect my home from natural forces such as storms and falling branches. All of my Gargoyles have names and they are treated like part of the family.

Herbs. There are many herbs that can be used in the protection of your home. You can sprinkle them across entrances much like Red Brick Dust or you can make magical brews and washes out of them to clean or draw runes and symbols with. This list is but a small portion of herbs that may be utilized for protective measures. Garlic, anise, bittersweet (poison), cinnamon, datura, juniper, wolfsbane (poison), and my go to favorite herb—vervain.

Runes and other symbols. These can be drawn through the air or “painted” on doors and windows with washes and brews. They can also be carved into the ground at the four corners of your property. Runes can be used on their own or combined to make bind-runes. Isa, Nauthiz and Algiz are just a few of the runes that can be used. The pentagram or pentacle is another popular protective symbol that is used as is in some magical circles, the cross.

What I have shared here are a few techniques that I use in protective magic for my home. There are many methods that have been known to work just as well as mine and it is wise to find the ones that work best for you. As the nights grow colder, I offer you many warm blessings for your hearth and home. May your home be safe from the nibbling of children…

Samhain Enchantment Spell

October, 2017

(“Witching Moon” Book of Shadows Parchment, Binder Refill Pages from Gypsy Wytch Diaries, OddSoul etsy shop.)

The Season of the Witch is upon us once again and Samhain is just about here!  You will need the following objects to complete this Spell and Enchantment.

We will start with the Object Enchantment first.  The main focus of this enchantment is for PROTECTION (of house, home, self, family.

The Enchantment is an “object enchantment.  You will need to find an object suitable for enchanting from your home or purchase something that you wish to enchant.  This item can be a gemstone, a necklace, a sun catcher, a scarecrow in your front yard is an excellent choice, a pumpkin on your porch or mantle…you get the idea.

So, items you need for this:

1.  Altar cloth or clean table surface

2.  Object you will be enchanting

3.  Tealight candle

4.  Incense (if you wish)

That’s it…

Okay, you have your items and now we’re going to talk a little bit about enchantments.  Everyone likes the word “enchant” but we, as a society, use this in a “fairytale” sort of way a lot of times.  To enchant is to actually “speak over and imbue something with your words, power and intent.”  It is to give the thing you’re enchanting, ‘orders from headquarters,’ and hop -to and do its new job!

You are in essence, imbuing the object with your own power; corresponding herbs, oils, objects of your intent; and sealing it with a spell that is heard, as you know in the Universe and goes to the ear(s) of your God/Goddess for provision.

Enchantments are EASY and, more importantly, POWERFUL talismans of magick.  They are easy to do, and just about anything can be enchanted.

So, with your items in front of you, light your incense and tealight, (open your circle and ground/protect yourself if this is your custom).  This object you have chosen will be a PROTECTIVE TALISMAN for your family, your pets, your home, your property, your car…everything associated with where you abide….to keep you and yours SAFE during the Autumn Seasons.  This is a WARDING agent.  It wards evil and things that don’t belong there and keeps them away.

1. Lay out your altar cloth on a clean table.

2. Sit down in front of table where your object is.  Close your eyes and visualize white light around you protecting you and cleansing you from head to toe.  Stay with this visualization until you feel good about it.  Then open your eyes.

3.  Hold the object in your dominant hand (the one you write with), or if it is too big (as in the case of a pumpkin or scarecrow for the front yard, lay your dominant hand on it, and blow your breath on the object.

4.  Once you blow on your object, say these words:

This object is keenly chosen by me,

To protect me and my family.

Ward my property well and protect us true,

Under the Midnight Stars and Skies of Blue.

Protect this family, I enchant you tonight,

An harm it none, keep us safe from fright.

By the Magick of Harvest Home, this spell is spun,

As I will, So Mote it Be, ‘An harm it none.”

5.  Now, take your hand off of the object.  Visualize the object taking on a “life force” of it’s own (I.e., if you use a scarecrow for example, visualize it coming to life and watching over your neighborhood and home at night.  If you use a gemstone, visualize it forming an “all-seeing eye” that sees and knows any threat that you come across and protects you from harm…) Once you have the visualization down, then say repetitively (at least 3x):

I add my intent to make you real,

With my words I enchant you to do my will.”

6.  After you are done with the chant, close your circle if you cast one, and place your object in a front and center place of stature in your home or outside in your front yard to keep you safe during the Fall Season.  If it is a wearable item, wear it as often as possible. When not being worn, keep it in a dish in your front entry (on a front entry table, etc.)

That’s it!  You now have an honestly enchanted object to help protect you and your family this Fall!

Witch Balls

Merry meet.

A blog by Silver RavenWolf for making witch balls for conjuring inspired me to try something similar as a project at a recent pagan gathering.

witchball1

The balls are made from herbs, essential oils and wax. They are meant to be thrown into a ceremonial fire, placed on an altar or in other spaces, added to mojo bags, or crumbled and scattered around an area. They are not to be eaten.

witchball2

The herbs and oils chosen will determine if the balls are for protection, cleansing, love, healing, abundance, banishing or some other intention.

witchball3

Although I made mine with wax, they can also be made using mud, clay, or a dough mixture of flour, salt, egg and water.

After determining your intent, collect ingredients with those properties. I used a mix of about a dozen herbs, spices, resins and dried flower petals for a total of about three cups.

witchball4

Working in small batches, I melted wax and poured some into the herb mixture, stirring with a spoon because the wax is hot. Mix in just enough wax that the herbs will hold together. Working quickly before the wax hardens, use your hands to form small balls. Place them on waxed paper or tin foil and allow them to cool.

witchball5

Melt more wax, adding essential oils if you wish, and one by one, dip each ball and place it back down. If you wish, you can smooth the balls before the wax hardens by rolling them between your palms as you would a meatball. Dip each ball at least twice. The more layers, the more sturdy the balls will be. In all, I used a bit more than a pound of beeswax.

witchball6

Some people drizzled wax in a contrasting color over their balls. One woman added small gemstones to hers. Slivers of money, ashes of photos or documents that have been burned, grave dirt and charms can also be added, along with whatever else your imagination conjures or your intuition desires.

Once cool, the balls store easily in egg cartons.

Merry part.

And merry meet again.

Meditation and Protective Incenses
Meditation Incense:
I use oils for this, which I purchase from Azure Green, but I’m sure you can find them at other places:
2 drops Sandalwood
2 drops Frankincense and myrrh
2 drops Rose
2 drops Lotus
This is a beautiful smelling incense which can induce a calm, peaceful, meditative state. Unlike most essential oils, these blend perfectly and smell intense. (not so intense that you will be overwhelmed)
Protective Incense
Warning, this is stinky. I burn it on charcoal disks. I found it really works:
Pinch of Vervain
Pinch of wormwood
Pinch of Angelica Root
Pinch of Mugwort
Pinch of Yarrow
As I said, it’s stinky. I had a threatening phone call from an ex-boyfriend, a Satanist, who was an ex from 27 years ago. I friend suggested I place a picture of him in my freezer from new moon to new moon. Another friend made me a bindrune which I placed on my altar. You may want to google protective runes to draw and place on your altar.
Another good meditative incense is mugwort. Now, I am not qualified as an herbalist so please contact one. A friend of mine said Mugwort tea helps clairvoyance. Tastes gross. Then they told me to add wormwood. Even worse! So I boiled about small handful of mugort and wormwood in a pot of water, strained it and lit cool with the lid on. Then I inhaled the water for a few minutes and used my divination techniques. I’ve never burned mugwort or wormwood as an incense.

ARTICLE FOR SPELL-STRUCK

Samhain Enchantment and

Protection Ritual Spell

UNDER THE NEW MOON TIN KIT

www.underthenewmoon.com

The Season of the Witch is upon us once again and Samhain is just about here!  This spell is adapted from a Witch Tin Kit I created for my store, Under The New Moon.  You will need the following objects to complete this Spell and Enchantment.  We will be doing an Enchantment first, then an actual Ritual…so this article covers a 2-fer for your October…to make it all the more Enchanted!  Let’s dig in!

We will start with the Object Enchantment first.  The main focus of this enchantment is for PROTECTION (of house, home, self, family.)  The Enchantment is an “object enchantment.  You will need to find an object suitable for enchanting from your home or purchase something that you wish to enchant.  This item can be a gemstone, a necklace, a sun catcher, a scarecrow in your front yard is an excellent choice, a pumpkin on your porch or mantle…you get the idea.

That’s it!  You now have an honestly enchanted object to help protect you and your family this Fall!

Now to our Samhain Protection Spell Ritual!

Samhain Ritual

In getting ready for your Ritual, you will need the following items:

* Black Sand or Black Salt

* Garlic

*White Salt

*Black Sequins

*Bag of Glass Beads (with white, black and purple in them)

*Bell (any size)

*Candy (8 small pieces total)

*Muslin Pouch

* a quiet place, not to be disturbed

* an incense that you really like that helps you calm down

* a pre-ritual shower (if so desired) to get the days’ negativity off of you

* a lighter

* a tealight holder (for the tealight candle, or a piece of heavy duty foil underneath the tealight to protect your surface)

Now…we’re going to set up your altar (the place where you will be doing your ritual) –

~ Lay out a black altar cloth or any color you prefer

~ Put the tealight holder to your right on the altar (or foil if that’s what you’re using)

~Place your incense holder (if you are using incnense) to your left upper corner

~ ~Take the black sand, and go outside and sprinkle the black sand around the perimeter of your entire property.  Best to do this as evening is approaching. Then go inside.

~ Take the white salt and go into the 4 corners of your house (whichever rooms those are, and throw a pinch of salt into each of the farthest 4 corners of your house and one pinch at the front door, one pinch at the back door (if you have side doors, do it there too.  But do the 4 corners of the house first.

~Stand in front of your altar and close your eyes and visualize the salt beaming up like crystal beams all around you protecting you during your ritual.  Stay with this visualization till you feel it takes within you.

Once you have felt the light around you and you are calm and breathing deeply, then sit and go ahead (either perform your circle casting, calling elements, etc. ONLY IF YOU WISH) and light your tealight candle and your incense.

Say:

“I call upon the Ancient Ones,

To help me with this spell to be spun.

Protect me now as I say my heart,

Keep all evil away so this Spell can start.”

By now, a bit of wax pool should be forming on the tealight candle.  Take a good pinch of the garlic granules (organic) and sprinkle on top of the tealight.  Seeing a couple of tiny sparks is an excellent sign.  Do another pinch if you wish, just not so much as to burn the candle out.

Take your bell and while sitting or standing, shake the bell in the top left corner of your altar, then the top right corner, then the bottom left corner and then the bottom right corner and lay it down.  A bell clears out negativity from you, your aura, and the room space.  The garlic in the candle keeps evil and entities you do not wish to be there, away; along with the salt and sand you spread out earlier.

Sit and Breathe in the scentsFocus.

Remember: your intent for this

Spell is PROTECTION.

With PROTECTION as your focus, take your pouch.

Place the pouch over the tealight (but obviously without letting it get burnt) and let the scent of the garlic infuse into it for a minute or so.  As you do this, visualize protection and safety for you and your family.

~Next, take the black string and tie 4 knots into it as equally spaced out as you are able.  While doing this, say:

“4 Knots for Protection At Its Best,

These 4 knots shall be put to the Test.

Protection comes our way today,

And stays with us through New Year’s Day.

(at which time, you should re-do another New Year’s Protection Spell.)

~Place the string into the muslin pouch.

~Place Two white beads into the pouch and say:

“These beads show what will take place

To trespassers who harm us in our space.”

Place the black beads in and focus on the black absorbing all negativity or ill wishes that may be sent your way from anyone.

Place the purple bead in while visualizing the love of God / Goddess & the power of Good.

Place the remainder of the garlic in the pouch.

Take the sequins and put 4 into the pouch.  Sprinkle the rest around your altar or a candle in your home (this ties the home to the pouch.)  While doing this, focus on the richness of your family’s lives together, your love, and that all negativity will be absorbed.

Eat 4 candies

Put 4 candies into the pouch.

Hang the pouch by a door,

Or keep on your person or purse.

Then say:

“Protection is Spun, It is Here…

It shall last ‘till the New Year.

Thank you for the Bounty I See,

That you have given me & my family.

So mote it be.”

You can now close your circle, release the quarters/elements, etc. (if you chose to do that), or simply clean up your space, thank your God/Goddess (or both) as in the spell above and put your pouch where you would like it.  Throw away any items not necessary to keep, and feel free to keep the bell for future spells (preferably of the same nature.) The candle and incense should be let to burn out completely or you may snuff them out when you are done.

You may choose to use either the enchantment spell OR this spell OR both to help protect you and your home this Fall Season.  Think of other ways you can make and enhance protection for you and your loved ones this Fall.

Merry Samhain!

“Spell for Peaceful Separation & Protection!©

The holidays are upon us!  We see pictures of postcards and greeting cards that show the Currier & Ives© pictures of how families are supposed to be—how we’re all smiling, sitting at a family dinner, sharing funny stories and laughing heartily as the fire blazes in the background and the cat is curled up on the mat in front of the fire.  Snow is falling and there are no troubles in the world.  Just joy.  Yes, that would be wonderful, but for many, this is not the picture of their holidays with their families.  First, we are assuming everyone has family to spend the holidays with.  This again, is not always the case.  Actually, and unfortunately so, the holidays can be a very difficult time for a lot of people.  There are a LOT of stressors during this time from Thanksgiving through New Years.  A lot of depression flocks many people and for some, they just want the holidays to be over.

Many feel obliged to attend the annual family dinner or gathering when, if given the choice, they would not want to spend their precious free time with these people.  That may sound harsh, but it IS how many feel.  Unfortunately their family of origin may not be all that ideal and family dysfunctional dynamics may run rampant.  Who would want to look forward to that?  You, dear reader, may be one of these people.  Well, you’re not alone.

So, summing this up, you may HAVE to go to that family gathering and just do the best you can.  You know, showing up, putting the fake smile on and not reacting to that uncle who drinks too much; or trying not to fly off the handle when Aunt Millie critiques your hair for the third time in a half and hour or respond when your mother comments on your weight for the umpteenth time.   Yes, sometimes we simply NEED to do some things and there’s no getting out of it.

So, in times like that, there are things you CAN DO that can help you feel empowered and more relaxed in such settings.  This spell just may help put the Jolly back in your Holidays!

I hope this helps and I hope and pray more than anything, you’re your holidays are Blessed beyond measure and that you laugh heartily, eat well, and enjoy the company of those that adore you!

Peaceful Separation & Protection Spell

There are times when we must emotionally separate from people and/or situations for our well being and theirs.  It can be difficult with emotions highly charged.  When faced with this situation or situation(s), getting all the help we can is vital.  With INTENT being the first and foremost important player in a peaceful emotional separation, other “physical” adjuncts are not necessarily a bad idea.  That’s where this spell comes in…just in the nick of time.  Using this spell along with your intent and focus, will help swiftly bring about the peacefulness you need along with needed protection for your physical well being and heart and mind and spirit.

In addition to the above, this spell can also help with “cooling” volatile situations down by putting “them” on ice.  Change it up as you ‘feel led to’ as that is what magick is all about.  The possibilities of this are endless.  Remember…Keep your goal and intent pure.

Moon Phase: Any time (if waning, use this spell in “banishing/freezing/stopping/deterring danger/harm” form; if the moon is in a waxing phase, use this spell in a “bring about peace, cooperativeness, protection, drawing those things to you form, etc)

Day: Any day (Sat is good for protection; Wed for communication; Monday for family and home; Tues for courage; Thurs and Sun are good for money, business matters and success)

Planet: Saturn or Pluto

Supplies:

  • A piece of paper
  • A all-around protection oil;
  • a pen;
  • a bag(plastic);
  • your freezer and
  • some water.

Now…here comes the part you need to be willing to do.  Don’t rush this.  Sit down; get a cup of relaxing tea; Take a few deep breaths and PRIOR to doing the actual spell, clear your head and write the name of the person(s) and/or situation(s) that are involved—detailing the situation completely.  TAKE YOUR TIME!  When did the challenge/problem arise?  What is happening now with it?  What is your desire regarding the situation/him/her?  Why are you performing a spell such as this to begin with?(you should know this answer or you should not do the spell,)  Remember, this spell is actually a physical act that helps manifest the intent.

Write everything you can think of.  It’s okay if it’s 3 pages long or if it’s just one paragraph…as long as you have covered it completely.  Put a vertical line on the paper (this is the rune Isa).  Put this Rune picture at the bottom of what you have written.

Once you have done this, you need to prepare for the spell work.  Do this when you won’t be interrupted.  You may choose to take a Ritual Bath which is nothing more than soaking in appropriate salts with herbs/oils (lavender works wonders for protection, in addition to be wonderful for your skin and mood) for the given spell and focusing your intent while you soak and envisioning the outcome desired.

Purify your space (smudge, light incense, sprinkle salt/water…)

Everyone has a different method for preparing for their ritual.  Whatever is your method, make sure you are in, what feels to you as Sacred Space and have the protection you need (i.e., casting a circle – which you can do by simply visualizing a blue flame of light encircling you; calling the Quarters or Elements which can be done in any form of your choosing or not at all…it is basically just recognizing the Guardians of North, South, East and West and asking for their protection and inviting them in your presence. You can also have those elements symbolized to represent Earth, Air, Fire and Water and this can also be done to your liking.  If you need further assistance with this area of the ritual, please email Under The New Moon at underthene[email protected] ),

Anoint yourself with the Oil (however you feel comfortable and internally led to…this may change each time you do the ritual.)

Fold the paper(s) into a small square;

Anoint the paper(s) with the Oil

and put the paper(s) in the baggie. (if the problem is really difficult, add water to cover the paper and make sure the bag is sealed well; if it’s minor, just add the paper to the bag with no water) Seal the bag.

Hold the bag in your dominant hand and visualize your situation (basically visualize everything you wrote down on the paper AND ENVISION THE DESIRED OUTCOME), then say the following OR change to make it more natural for you (remember, your magick lies within you!):

Bring Peaceful Separation NOW~

Bring Peace & Calm & This is How~

Restore Harmony, Joy & Delight~

Make Amicable and Protect, This is my Right~

Personal Advocacy, Guarding of My Heart I Seek~

With Peace & Love That Does Flow Free.

It shall not Release, Until It shall Unfreeze.

And when I unfreeze this(these) Written Page(s) of Life,

All will be well, with no strife.

‘An Harm It None, This Spell Is Done.

Always works; always a blessing.

Now while still in your spell and magickal ‘framework of mind,’ place the baggie in the very back of the freezer behind whatever, where you are sure it won’t be disturbed.

Leave the baggie in there as long as you want/feel necessary.  Remembering that when you do unfreeze it and release the spell, you are confident that the situation has resolved and knowing that your initial spellwork still protects you after it is completed (unfreezes), you need not worry. However, you can feel free to leave it in the freezer indefinitely – as no harm will come to anyone.

This spell never hurts anyone (as long as intent is pure.)  As with all spells, your INTENT is EVERYTHING ~~ Be positive, even in a ‘conflict type setting’ – Remember Karma… J Now, go~~relax~~enjoy the holidays!  Anticipate a stress-free environment.
