Book Review
Mindful Dreaming
Harness the Power of Lucid Dreaming for Happiness, Health, and Positive Change
by Clare R. Johnson, Ph. D.

I
love dreaming! It is one of my favorite things to do! I have been
tracking and working with my dreams for years. But sadly, I have not
had much luck with lucid dreaming, even though I’ve read many books
on the topic and practiced lots of different techniques.

Author
Dr. Clare Johnson is the first person to write a doctoral thesis on
the topic of lucid dreaming as a creative tool. She’s
been a lucid dreamer since the age of 3 and is currently the
president of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
So, she brings a real gravitas to the topic of working with your
dreams. Her book offers a different take on the practice of lucid
dreaming in Mindful Dreaming. She approaches “wakefulness” from
the vantage point of “mindfulness,” bringing your attention to
what is happening in the present moment. We bring our attention to
the present moment, not only while awake, but during the one-third of
our lives that we spend dreaming. The goal of mindful dreaming, as
she explains, is to become awake to our unconscious patterns, modify
them and heal our lives. “When we learn to be more present in our
waking life, we are more likely to discover how our thoughts can
shape our reality,” says Dr. Johnson. All this from dreaming, and
not years of therapy?? Yes.

The
key? Working with your dreams while you’re awake! For a
lucid-dreamer wannabe like me, to know that I can go beyond recording
my dreams and actually work with them and “change the movie” is
exciting. Dreams are not just random firing of brain synapses.
Rather, they are the doorway into our vast personal and collective
unconscious. Learning to understand their dense symbolic language
and decode their metaphors helps us to release powerful emotions,
fears and memories stored at the cellular level. When we unravel
unexpected associations that dreams make, we enhance our creativity.
If we pay attention to their messages, we are shown where illness
might develop. And we experience life-changing contact with the
numinous when we become aware of our “soul dreams.”

Dr.
Johnson takes us through the basics of working with our dreams: sleep
hygiene, dream incubation, dream recollection and journaling. These
are the first few of 50 dream practices and Lucid Dreamplay
suggestions present in each chapter. The beauty of the Lucid
Dreamplay practices is that many of them are done while you are
awake! You can change your “inner movie,” write, sketch or
dialogue your way into an understanding of a key dream image and tell
a dream to a friend in order to excavate its many layers. The
unconscious mind begins to build a blueprint for the possibility of
change in waking life and the direction that change can take. Your
unconscious will also begin to build new blueprints when you
consciously make changes in your dreams. The book contains many
examples of
how these practices work for different dreams and dreamers. The
techniques are valuable because working with dreams while awake can
mirror the experience of lucid dreaming and have the same powerful
results, as Dr. Johnson points out. She also outlines a nine step
program for becoming lucid in dreams.

In
addition to the useful and well-described techniques, Dr. Johnson
devotes individual chapters to understanding and working with
different types of dreams including nightmares; dreams of grief, loss
and death; sexual dreams; dreams of illness and pain; and soul dreams
or what I call “Big Dreams.” The book concludes with a chapter
on creating your own best life by working mindfully with dreams while
awake and asleep: “Dreamwork is a little like magic because it
allows us to dissolve the veil the covers our own hidden, unconscious
world. Once the veil is gone, we can clearly see the state of our
life; what it lacks and what it needs to be healthier and happier.”
Working with the Dreamplay practices will take you deep and keep you
busy, but just in case you want to go beyond Mindful Dreaming,
there is a Resource section. I am going to continue to use this book
to get to dream lucidity!

Ms. Fenton wrote a book that is in a straightforward way. I found it engaging and not boringly technical.

I’ve read three other books on astrology by other authors. But, Ms. Fenton’s book is one that gives you the real bare bones of what it takes for you to become an astrologer. Some of the chapters that she covers are, signs of the zodiac, the rising sign and the ascendant, the planets, predictive techniques, and easy miscellany.

In the chapter what constitutes astrology, she gives two different websites, for you to try out. I tried both of these on my phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy S9 +, on Verizon carrier. I had a problem getting both of these to work on my phone. My husband was born in a small town in Illinois that is the same as the town in England; it kept wanting to pick the city in England on both apps. I then tried them on my Kindle Fire and my Lenovo TV – X103F. On both of those, the apps worked perfectly. So, you may have a little bit of an issue every once in a while using the phone.

Ms. Fenton picked up seven different famous people to show their natal charts. Two of them are notorious British gangsters. They are in fact twins; she wanted to show the similarities and differences in astrology when it comes to twins. I have to say it was exciting to read this. The other people that she picked are like Jimi Hendrix (the musician), JFK, the President of the United States, Tom Hanks (the actor), and a couple of others. She picked these people and their natal charts for different demonstrations in how to bring the chart together.

The way Ms. Fenton has this laid out, it makes sense without being overly technical. And I have to say it made it an easy read, compared to some of the other books. So, if you’re looking for something that short, concise, and to the point, I would suggest starting with this book in learning your first steps to astrology. I found it very enjoyable.

Chapter 4

Western Meditation Techniques

There are thousands of books on eastern meditation, but I wish to concentrate on the western traditions as they are less well documented and require much less time to master. These traditions have been hidden for hundreds of years until the early nineteenth century. Some were the sole province of the religious orders and others were carried on in secret, by various groups and individuals. Although the reasoning behind the various systems may seem flawed to the modern mind, I can assure the reader that these exercises work. My own belief is that these were discovered by trial and error and whichever techniques worked were passed down to others, enmeshed in whatever ideology suited the teacher. Also, I have found, through personal experience, that there is a huge fund of knowledge within the collective unconscious mind (Carl Jung) that we can tap into during dreams and meditations.

The Treeing Exercise

This is a well-known meditation and it covers an important area of western tradition.

It helps us increase our feeling of ‘connectedness’ with the earth and gives us greater control over our altered states of mind as we journey. It is always a good idea to begin any meditations with the treeing exercise. As the name suggests, it helps us anchor ourselves emotionally before exploring our inner worlds. It also gives a great feeling of calm energy and optimism. This can be used anywhere, either sitting, standing or lying down. Sitting against a large mature tree during this meditation will certainly add to its effects.

Close your eyes and breathe as slowly, and as deeply as is comfortable.

Imagine that you are a tree.

Visualise the sun above you are pouring light and warmth onto your crown and branches.

Feel the warmth flowing through you and down into your legs and feet.

Picture your body filling with bright light.

Imagine your feet are rooted to the ground.

In your mind see the light form tendrils which push deep into the earth, like the roots of a tree.

Push the tendrils deep into the earth as the energy of the sun pours through your body.

See the tendrils spread out into tiny roots and anchor firmly into the soil.

Now, as you breathe in, draw the light of the sun down your spine and deep into the earth.

As you breathe out, draw the energies of the earth up through your roots, along your spine, and through the top of our head… sending their vibration through your body and out to the universe.

As you breathe in, feel the light flowing down into the ground and clearing and tension and pain from your body and into the earth to be transformed and healed.

When you feel totally relaxed and energised, then you may continue to another meditation, or slowly open your eyes when you feel ready to do so.

Seeking Peace in a Garden of Roses

Morning sunlight sparkling on a single drop of dew,

Light cascades like a rainbow on a rose.

Toes curling on the cool, wet grass.

The world is still asleep.

You walk in solitary silence, but you are not alone.

You share your thoughts and cares with One who truly Knows.

The One whose Spirit warms your blood and fills your heart.

The One who pours Their love into your very bones.

And you are blessed.

Memories come back to you unbidden,

Happy times that filled your heart with joy.

The chattering of your brain is stilled,

The worries and the sorrows drift away.

Then slowly, gently you become aware of now,

You face the world without the needless furrows on your brow.

And you are blessed.

Touch the rose with tenderness,

Kiss it gently as you taste the dew upon your lips.

Breathe in deeply as you fill your lungs with beauty.

Taste the fragrance of the morning garden,

Heady with the scent of earth and grass and summer flowers.

Stretch and raise your hands up to the sky,

and know that you are blessed.

This is an ideal meditation to follow the ‘treeing’ exercise. It can bring a feeling of relaxation, expansiveness, and connection to nature. It will increase our feelings of calm and inner peace.

Sometimes we are not ready to face our feelings head-on. Perhaps we have been under a lot of strain and feel tired and depleted. Too many demands from life may have left us feeling drained and ’empty’. Issues with friends and family that we have avoided dealing with may have exhausted our energy, – leaving us in no fit state to deal with them. Be gentle with yourself. We all hide away from things that are too painful to deal with. Simply take the time to heal and regroup your energies before tackling difficult issues.

We sometimes need to take the time to rest and nurture ourselves. Sadly, it is not always possible to take the time needed to do this. Use this meditation to take your own personal “mini-break” when you get a few spare minutes.

Breathe deeply and relax as you exhale a few times. Then take a few minutes to absorb the poem and gaze at the picture. Then use the relaxation exercise or one of the other meditations in the book and allow your mind to take you to a pleasant safe place where you will find inner healing and often, wisdom and guidance.

Book Review – Lucid Dreaming Plain and Simple: Tips and Techniques for Insight, Creativity and Personal Growth By Robert Waggoner and Caroline McCready

March, 2018

Book Review –

Lucid Dreaming Plain and Simple:

Tips and Techniques for Insight, Creativity and Personal Growth

By Robert Waggoner and Caroline McCready

No sailor controls the sea…Similarly, no lucid dreamer controls the dream. Like a sailor on the sea, we lucid dreamers direct our perceptual awareness within the larger state of dreaming.” – Robert Waggoner.

We don’t consciously create our dreams; we only ride their waves and direct our experience.” Caroline McCready.

I love dreaming. As a child, I woke up from dreams feeling like I had visited another world – a world that is as real as the “every day” world we move around in. I still feel that way. I love having a “big dream” – one the feels like a communication from another realm or includes visits from the Beloved Dead. These dreams feel so real, sometimes more real than what happens while I am awake! I have spent years recording my dreams, tracking patterns of dreaming by the moon and by astrological sign. I have participated in dream circles listening to the dreams of others, marveling at how we often had similar dreams or walked in each other’s dreaming on the same night. I often wondered how those connections come into being.

But, after all these years, I have had little experience with lucid dreaming. Other than listening to how easily it comes for some of my friends, that is. And wondering why I haven’t had a sustained lucid dreaming experience. In case you are not familiar with the concept, lucid dreaming occurs when dreamers “wake up” inside a nighttime dream, realize they are dreaming and can direct activity in the dream. Oh, I have so wanted to do this for such a long time. I’ve read lots of books, taken courses, explored all kinds of approaches to lucid dreaming, but have never been able to do more than realize that I am dreaming and shock myself awake with excitement! So, I was truly excited to read “Lucid Dreaming-Plain and Simple.” Authors Robert Waggoner and Caroline McCready are lifetime dream explorers, like I am. They’ve not only experienced lucid dreaming, they’ve studied it. Their research started with the works of Stephen LaBerge, Patricia Garfield, Ann Faraday and Carlos Castaneda, among the better-known early pioneer writers on the topic. I, too, poured over these authors’ works, studying and practicing techniques for lucidity.

(Original Painting by Susan Rossi)

Waggoner and McCready are much better students than I! They have dreamed lucidly with great success and now offer us a doorway into dream deepening that is a synthesis of the lucidity pioneers and their own experience. And this book is more than a dreaming technique guide. It is a manual about consciousness and perception.

I devoured this book. It is well written and engaging, full of the authors’ experiences in the dream time and well sourced in independent dream research. I have tried several of the techniques for lucid dream entry the authors present. It still hasn’t happened for me. However, I am filled with new optimism. Because Waggoner and McCready broaden the approach to lucidity way beyond simply achieving it. They present lucidity not as the result of techniques or the ability to fly when you want to in a dream. Rather, they raise with the reader an inquiry into of the awareness of consciousness and its role in “waking” and “dreaming” reality. As a longtime meditator, I realized I can go through this doorway to get to lucidity and that truly, dreaming is about playing with the web of consciousness and its interrelatedness with all that is! Waggoner writes that through his practice of lucid dreaming, he discovered a “consistent framework of rules and principles beneath lucid dreaming events” and that this “hidden framework suggested that dreaming and the unconscious actually followed rules and had structure.” Dreaming is not just “random firing of neurons.” In fact, he explores the idea that there is an intelligent awareness that exists behind our dreams and that this awareness will respond to questions posed to it. For those of us who read PaganPagesOrg, this feels quite familiar, I’m sure. All that is has an awareness we can dance with and through this dance we engage in co-creation with the web of energy and intelligence behind the solid world that we perceive.

In examining lucidity with this broad view, McCready and Waggoner address the nature of what is “real.” We readers are encouraged to explore with a critical eye the nature of our assumptions about “waking” and “dreaming.” Through this process, the authors state, we will receive “an education in the nature of the mind and perceived experience that calls forth insights capable of transforming yourself and your waking life.” So, for me, lucid dreaming is now about so much more than remembering to look for my hands in a dream. It is about “waking up” to my assumptions about the nature of what is real. It is about lifting the veil of separation so that all that is does not remain compartmentalized in my mind. So perhaps I am already awake within the dream during daylight hours! I loved this book and recommend it to you to awaken within the dream of your life AND in your nighttime dreams.
