This month\u2019s column will be about how to make a divination tool: a scrying mirror. Even if you\u2019re not on a budget, it\u2019s always nice to make your own tools. Creating something by hand puts your magical energy into the tool, making it an extension of yourself.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Scrying is one of the oldest forms of divination. The shiny surface of water \u2013 in pools and bowls \u2013 is a common medium. Mirrors (\u201cMirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?\u201d in \u201cSnow White and the Seven Dwarfs.) and crystals (often polished balls) are also often used as a clairvoyant aid to focus and see visions. A five-inch black obsidian mirrors can cost $70 or more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For your own mirror, choose a picture frame with glass. It can be large or small, old or new, ornate or simple, round or rectangle. Chances are the more unique it is, the better it will help transport you to an altered space. A wood frame would add an element of nature.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Remove the glass, wash and dry it, being sure to get off all the dust. Place it face side down on a piece of newspaper. Spray or brush the back with an even light coat of black acrylic paint. Let it dry completely and give it a second coat.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When it is dry, reassemble the glass into the frame with the black side facing toward the back. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019d like, decorate the frame or even the corners of the glass with symbols, gemstones, buttons, charms or other treasured objects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bless or otherwise consecrate the mirror, adding a prayer of protection so that the divination you do is safe and successful. The more time you spend it with, the stronger your connection will become. Try using it for astral travel or spirit communications, too.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When you plan your craft time, consider making it on a dark moon \u2013 a time of mystery, wisdom, darkness and magic \u2013 so that the moon\u2019s power lends itself to the oracle tool as well. (Some traditions call for making it on a full moon.) Working mindfully, chanting or creating the mirror in sacred space will also impart energy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
