ElectraChic is a German based band who released their debut album, ImPassionn\u00e9ment<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>in November of 2016. They find their influences & themes in Shamanism and through the Sacred Feminine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When <\/span><\/span>it was time for <\/span><\/span>ElectraChic <\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span> set out to make a video for the first song, <\/span><\/span>Erde\/Terre,<\/span><\/span> off their new album, <\/span><\/span>ImPassionn\u00e9ment<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>they did not have very far to look. Singer Annick Moerman & Musician Rike Casper turned to Annick\u2019s son, <\/span><\/span><\/span>25 year old <\/span><\/span><\/span>Thomas Govaerts<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>a recent graduate of the School of Media.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We asked Thomas <\/span><\/span>to share his thoughts with us on the making of the video for Erde\/Terre and here is what he had to share:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>For a couple of years I\u2019ve also been passionate about spirituality and esotericism. During my studies I had the chance to try a shamanic journey with drums. I looked for many other practices since then (paganism, mediation, or yoga for example).<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

About one year ago, my mother (Annick Moerman) made this album, ImPassionn\u00e9ment, with Rike Casper. She asked me if I could do a music video for her. I could choose any music off the album and I immediately chose Erde (\u201cEarth\u201d in German) because of its shamanic sounds.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In my job or during my studies I worked on great projects, but none of them had a spiritual meaning or aesthetic. I\u2019ve always had a wish to insert spiritual contents in a pure visual form, almost abstract and without using words in videos.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, for me shamanism is the perfect subject. During a shamanic experience (not necessarily using drugs, but only drum or dancing) someone can get information, not in a literal form but through images or sensations. Maybe that\u2019s the reason why there are many symbols in old mythologies.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is the kind of feeling I wanted to put in a video, I wanted to use visuals to deliver a spiritual feeling.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason I <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>did<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> a lot of research on pagan symbols: Icelandic magical staves, Viking runes, Aztec symbols, Rongorongo alphabet. The sami drums was also a major inspiration (more info: \u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>http:\/\/old.no\/samidrum\/<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In this video there is a mix\u00a0\u00a0of old and existing symbols and symbols of my creation.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Even if those symbols come from very different times and places, I find them very similar. They are very simple and na\u00efve but they have the power to connect you to something very old and ancestral. They don\u2019t interact with your intellect, but they go deeper. It\u2019s as if they could activate an unconscious force.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I also wanted to represent the sacred feminine and its connection to nature and earth. I think that the dance is a visual form that can perfectly express this. The dance\u00a0\u00a0allowed me to do a fluid and dynamic video, and not only to show static symbols. I tried to create a unity between the symbols, the music, the dancing and nature, to make a very alive and organic video. In the same way, during a shamanic experience, things are connected but always changing: what is usually hidden to the eyes becomes manifest. At the end of the music video the dancer completely merges into this unity.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So I hope that the video works on the viewer\u2019s\u00a0unconscious and that, in some way, it connects him to the invisible aspect of nature.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if I succeeded in this task, I\u2019m still a young filmmaker and this is one my first works. I see that there are still a lot of mistakes in the video. However, I hope that in the future I\u2019ll make other better videos. I would like to make videos that have a real impact on the viewer, as if they were spells. A little bit like Lynch\u2019s or Jodorowsky\u2019s movies.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The shooting of the video was made in the forest near Brussels. For the equipment we used a Canon 5D. The cinematography is made by Quentin Govaerts. The dancer is Charlotte Bossu. I did the directing, editing and the visuals effects.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
