{"id":159,"date":"2008-10-01T00:04:08","date_gmt":"2008-10-01T00:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paganpages.org\/content\/?p=159"},"modified":"2008-09-30T16:52:03","modified_gmt":"2008-09-30T21:52:03","slug":"the-kitchen-witch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/2008\/10\/01\/the-kitchen-witch\/","title":{"rendered":"The Kitchen Witch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Samhain- and the \u201cveil\u201d thins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this issue I will share my Coven\u2019s favorite Samhain recipes.\u00a0 We will bake with pumpkin and make a wonderful cocoa.<\/p>\n<p>Samhain, the Witch\u2019s New Year.\u00a0 It is the third and final Harvest Festival.\u00a0 It is a time for contemplation, looking back as well as looking forward.\u00a0 Perfect timing for all kinds of divination.\u00a0 It\u2019s a special time to remember and honor our recently departed loved ones and to look farther back and honor our ancestors.\u00a0 The veil that separates the world of the living with that of the dead is at it\u2019s thinnest this won\u2019t happen again until Beltane.\u00a0 This is why divination is especially clear and why the possibility of communicating with the other side is easier.\u00a0 Please enjoy them and if you have any of your own you\u2019d like to share please email them to me.\u00a0 That is unless you all want to see the same recipes for Samhain next year.\u00a0 Please send any of your Thanksgiving and Yule recipes now as I will start working on those issues soon and not just those, send any Sabbat and or holiday recipes you are willing to share for any time of the year.\u00a0 I like being a bit ahead of\u00a0 the game.\u00a0 You can email me at dea7887@yahoo.com<\/p>\n<p>With that I give your Samhain.<\/p>\n<p>Till next month,<br \/>\nCarpe Noctum,<br \/>\nDea, of The Descendants of the Flame<\/p>\n<p>I would like to share with you a recipe for Samhain Cocoa that has been in my family for many generations.\u00a0 It is warm and rich and as you close your eyes and smell it\u2019s spicy goodness let your mind drift to those who gave so much so that we might walk our paths without fear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samhain Cocoa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00bc C. cocoa powder<br \/>\n\u00bc tsp. cinnamon<br \/>\n\u00bc C. sugar<br \/>\n1 tsp. pure vanilla<br \/>\n1\/3 C. hot water<br \/>\nDash of sea salt<br \/>\n4 C. milk<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magical attributes<\/strong><br \/>\nCocoa- love, passion, power, wisdom<br \/>\ncinnamon- protection and love<br \/>\nvanilla &#8211; love and wellness<\/p>\n<p>In a saucepan bring to a boil cocoa, salt, sugar and water.\u00a0 Stir constantly for 2 minutes.\u00a0 Add milk and stir till well heated but do not boil.\u00a0 Remove from heat and add cinnamon and vanilla.\u00a0 Beat with a whisk.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most anticipated meal of the year.\u00a0 Meal in a pumpkin.\u00a0 Not only is it beautiful it is delicious.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meal in a pumpkin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medium sized pumpkin (4lbs)<br \/>\n1 tsp. sea salt<br \/>\n1 \u00bd lbs. lean ground beef<br \/>\n1 tsp. seasoned salt<br \/>\n\u00be C. bell pepper, chopped<br \/>\n\u00bd tsp. pepper<br \/>\n1\/3 C. celery, chopped<br \/>\n\u00bc C. soy sauce<br \/>\n1 C. onion, chopped<br \/>\n1 can cream of chicken soup<br \/>\n2 T. brown sugar<br \/>\n2 C. rice, cooked<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magical attributes<\/strong><br \/>\nPumpkin- fertility and plenty<br \/>\nSea salt- spice of life, purifying<br \/>\nrice- prosperity<\/p>\n<p>Using a knife cut a lid in the pumpkin, scoop out seeds and excess membrane.\u00a0 In a large skillet combine ground beef, green peppers, celery, and onion.\u00a0 Cook until beef is browned, then drain.\u00a0 Add remaining ingredients, mix well.\u00a0 Place mixture into pumpkin, put lid on pumpkin and place on a foil lined cookie sheet.\u00a0 Bake at 350 degrees F. for about 2 \u00bd hours.\u00a0 To serve, scoop out part of the baked pumpkin along with the meat\/rice mixture.<\/p>\n<p>This recipe has been circulated around the web for many years.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know the source.\u00a0 I am sharing them with you because I think they will add to your Samhain celebration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rosemary Remembrance Cookies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 1\/2 C. powdered sugar<br \/>\n1 C. unsalted butter, softened<br \/>\n1 lrg. egg<br \/>\n2 tsp. pure vanilla<br \/>\n1 tsp. almond extract<br \/>\n2 1\/2 C. all purpose flour<br \/>\n1 tsp. baking soda<br \/>\n1 tsp. cream of tartar<br \/>\n1 1\/2 T. chopped rosemary<\/p>\n<p><strong>Magical attributes<\/strong><br \/>\nrosemary- protection and remembrance<br \/>\nvanilla- wellness and love<br \/>\nalmond- prosperity<\/p>\n<p>Heat oven 375 degrees F. In a large bowl, beat sugar, butter, egg, vanilla, almond extract, and rosemary until creamy. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Fold flour mixture into sugar mixture. Beat until dough forms and refrigerate for three hours. Divide dough into halves. Roll out one portion to 3\/16 of an inch on a floured surface. Cut out with Samhain cookie cutters. and place on an un-greased cookie sheet. Repeat rolling and cutting with second portion. Bake for 5-7 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>My Witchlings have been making these cookies for 13 years.\u00a0 They are very tasty and wonderful.\u00a0 Witchlings love to make these pumpkin seeds after making Jack-o-lanterns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neeko and David\u2019s Pumpkin Seeds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2 C. pumpkin seeds, washed and towel dried<br \/>\n2 tsp. oil<br \/>\n1tsp.
