The concept might be a norm with fantasy fiction, but with\nthis addition from Mercedes Lackey, we find magic in the rawest form.\nElemental magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have\npersonally read this book over a 100 times, no joke. It is one of my\nearliest exposures to the actual \u2018possibility\u2019 of magic existing\nin our world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I\nstepped into the world of Jason and Rose, two totally different\npersonalities and walks of life, I felt a kinship with Rose. She is a\nlearned scholar and in the time period of the book that is\npractically unheard of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now,\npicture this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nuniversity-taught young woman, raised in Chicago, after losing her\nfather, has found out the full depth of his debt. He made some rather\nshady monetary choices and lost it to a charlatan who had managed to\ndo the same with all of his other backers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After\nwatching all of her worldly possessions being carted off by the bank,\nshe was taken under the wing of a fellow professor of her father\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter\nJason. Besides being a very well known rail baron and millionaire,\nliving on Nob Hill in California-he is also a Fire Master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made a\nvery foolish choice, after thinking that he had enough magical power,\nto attempt a werewolf-loupe Garou (1) spell that would allow him to\nchange between werewolf form and human form at will; while still\nretaining his human mind. This failed in a way he never expected. It\nleft him unable to read, write or practice magic fully due to the\nchanges he created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter Paul\ndu Mond, a selfish and perverse man who is also Jason\u2019s protegee &#8211;\nworking to become a Fire Master himself. He is quite prolific in his\nvarious diversions to acquire power. He feels like the elemental\npowers should be his without the regular work and patience involved\nto rise in power to a Master of Fire as well. He is also Jason\u2019s\nsecretary who handles the business that Jason cannot due to his\nhubris (2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is\nanother Fire Master, Simon Beltaire, who believes as Paul does that\nmagical power can be derived from sex magic and pain. He lives in San\nFrancisco. After enticing Paul with offers of teaching his way of\nmagic, he turns Paul against Jason, while turning Paul into a spy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After\nRose\u2019s father passed away, a letter was sent to her \u201cknight of\nshining armor\u201d from Jason outlining his need a scholar to help read\nfor him, under the pretext of needing a governess for children he\ndidn\u2019t have. Feeling like all she was able to do was to teach, this\noffer felt too good to be true, she accepted the offer with some\nconcern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off to\nCalifornia, she goes! \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could\nsimply say that I love this book, however it\u2019s more than that. This\nbook fueled my teenage years with joy and happiness. A world that I\ncould travel to and escape my reality. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition\nto this, I was also just beginning to learn about magic and things of\nthe occult. This also happened to be the only way I could \u201clearn\u201d\nabout the Craft in a way that wouldn\u2019t upset my parents.(I\u2019m not\nadvocating hiding anything from parents at all!) \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all,\nthis is a good read and a lovely way to spend an afternoon curled up\nwith a cuppa, and a snack!
