{"id":2055,"date":"2009-07-01T01:10:16","date_gmt":"2009-07-01T06:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/paganpages.org\/content\/?p=2064"},"modified":"2009-07-01T06:30:33","modified_gmt":"2009-07-01T11:30:33","slug":"the-art-of-helena-domenic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/2009\/07\/01\/the-art-of-helena-domenic\/","title":{"rendered":"The Art of Helena Domenic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">The Fellowship of the Fool  Tarot<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Helena Domenic<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"HPS\" rel=\"lightbox[pics2064]\" href=\"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/HPS.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-2065 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/HPS.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"HPS\" width=\"148\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">I cr<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">eated this deck <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">to be a reflection of my own world \u2013 the models for the deck were all friends, colleagues, classmates, and students from all the different areas of my life \u2013 the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel, friends from in and around the DC\/Baltimore and Philadelphia Pagan communities, faculty and friends at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, as well as some of my students from Cheyney. I hope that although this deck is such a reflection of my world, that you are able to find some resonances with it as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">I began the creation of this deck in May of 2006, and completed it in October of 2007. I was fortunate enough to be able to use the deck as part of my work towards my Masters at Goddard College. In November of 2007, shortly after the deck\u2019s completion, I created an installation at the Between the Worlds conference in Wilmington, Delaware. This installation was also part of my work at Goddard, and was called \u201cThe Womb Room.\u201d In the Womb Room, I created an environment using large silk paintings, music that was composed by my friend Ivo Dominguez, and was meant to create an atmosphere conducive to meditations and readings. I read from the Tarot deck for the first time in the Womb Room as part of the installation. I felt deeply honored and privileged to be able to debut the deck in such an atmosphere of learning and mysticism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Strength\" rel=\"lightbox[pics2064]\" href=\"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Strength.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-2068 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Strength.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"Strength\" width=\"165\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 1ex;\">\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">I  am proud to say that the very first copy of the deck was auctioned off  at Between the Worlds to benefit the New Alexandrian Library, and was  the item with the highest bid at the auction, at $500.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">A  goal that I had for this deck was that it represent the multicultural  world we live in. I wanted to have representations of every kind of  person in the deck \u2013 large, small, black, white, Hispanic, Asian,  old, young, and every shade in between. I feel blessed to have a life  that is filled with all kinds of people, and I wanted my deck to reflect  that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">I  wanted the deck to be fairytale like in the imagery, yet have a modern  feel \u2013 I have done away with the traditional court card names in favor  of the names of the levels granted by medieval guilds and magickal orders.  I felt that as an American, the traditional court card names simply  would not work for me. I think there may be other people who feel the  same way. The Court Cards are more reflective to me of where people  are in their lives, levels of experience and wisdom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><a title=\"Death\" rel=\"lightbox[pics2064]\" href=\"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Death.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-2069 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Death.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"Death\" width=\"146\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">I  also understand and completely expect that each person who views the  images in this deck will develop their own views of what the images  and symbols mean for them \u2013 even if those views differ a great deal  from mine. As a visual artist, I have learned that perception is everything  \u2013 what has one meaning for one person may have a completely different  meaning from another. The meanings I have made of the cards are included  here for your guidance \u2013 but I do realize, especially with Tarot \u2013  and with the visual arts \u2013 that nothing is written in stone. Feel  free to make what meaning you will of the cards, with my descriptions  as a touchstone for your own understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">Most  of all, have fun with this deck! Helena received her BFA\u00a0 from Kutztown University and her MA in Education from The U of A\u00a0 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and her MFA from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. She teaches the\u00a0 History of her craft and many forms of it, such as African, drawing, and Painting at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Helena\u2019s artwork has appeared in publications such as <em>Faerie magazine, Green Egg, Sage Woman<\/em>, and other publications. In addition to teaching at Cheyney, Helena has taught at The\u00a0 U of A and Rutgers University, and a variety of conferences and festivals around the country. Helena has organized artwork exhibits for the Cheyney University campus and her work has appeared in\u00a0 galleries at the UN, Egypt, South Africa, and across the United States.<\/div>\n<div>Helena is also an Elder and High Priestess in the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel.
