The idea of a book about spells and folk magic written by a religious sister with a Catholic background is fascinating. Sister Karol\u2019s Book of Spells, Blessings and Folk Magic is a beautiful book that explores the impact of mainstream religion on what Sister Karol refers to as the religion of \u201cnone\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The religion of \u201cnone\u201d is described as persons who are \u201cliving at the heart of what the Dalai Lama sees as a spiritual revolution, a shift in consciousness touching the heart of those who seek to save their soul without religion\u201d. The \u201cnones\u201d are described as persons who find divine inspiration not in organized religion, but in a level of profound concern about one\u2019s own spiritual life and the well-being of others. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are a \u201cnone\u201d this book will help you create and strengthen your own spiritual practice. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is written in regards to prayer, home altars and the magic of the ritual. She assists the reader in creating their own prayers and rituals by providing a general outline of choosing the date, making the day holy, beginning the ritual, lighting the candles, incensing, making the magic and finally letting it be.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The book includes Sister Karol\u2019s collection of favorite rituals and how they work. This is what she refers to as her \u201cprayer book\u201d. In this section of the book, you will find prayers, blessings and spells such as a Memorial Blessing, the Lord\u2019s Prayer and a Rosh Hashanah Blessing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
