Of all the oracles in the world, the I Ching is the oldest, dating back more than 4,000 years. Created by Fu Xi, the mythical First Emperor of China, the I Ching is also known as the \u201cBook of Changes.\u201d Not only does it provide forecasts of the future, it is also the source of all Chinese wisdom.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The outcome of throwing three coins determines if a line is broken or whole. Stack upon one another, each set of three lines forms a trigram; in all there are eight \u2013 based on the eight directions of heaven. Those were later expanded to 64 hexagrams, each made up of six lines, that now make up the I Ching.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Born in Taiwan, Cho-Hsiu Chen studied Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist teaching over many years with many masters. She learned about different versions of I Ching, including an old one with interpretations by Lai Zhi De who was born in 1525. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That version combined Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Legalism with a deep understanding of the laws of nature. That is what Chen is presenting in this book, along with 68 of her paintings, each illustrating one of the hexagrams and adding another dimension to understanding the wisdom being imparted. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Embedded inside the back cover are three coins. After reading just two and a quarter pages, you\u2019ll know everything you need to know to begin tossing the coins, drawing the lines and looking up the corresponding forecast. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My throws offered two pieces of advice that two days later showed up in a tarot reading. You can be sure I will be throwing them again and again.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

About the Author<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Chao-Hsiu Chen was born in Taiwan, where she grew up with the influences of Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism \u2013 the foundation of her wide knowledge and deep understanding of Chinese philosophies and wisdom. She has written 40 books published in 20 languages, including, \u201cThe Bamboo Oracle: Confucian Wisdom for Every Day,\u201d \u201cA Clever Rabbit Has Three Hiding Places: Strategies for Life from Chinese Folk Wisdom,\u201d \u201cThe Chinese Art of Winning\u201d and \u201cThe Master: Teachings for Enlightenment.\u201d Chao\u2019s paintings can be found all over Europe and she composes music. The message she wants to get across with each of these art forms is, \u201cLove can grow hope, as long as we know how to treasure it.\u201d<\/span><\/span>
