\u201cSpark Magic\u201d isn\u2019t a book, but an odd little novelty item intended to inspire the imagination. Although it might have easily been a deck of cards or a book of suggestions, \u201cSpark Magic\u201d comes in the form of a box of fifty cardboard sticks shaped like matches that don\u2019t light, but instead, have short, pithy suggestions for introducing and manifesting magic in your life. The design and execution of the box is charming and shiny, and suggests something mystical inside; the matches themselves are cute and well-made.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The suggestions written on the matches vary from less to more magical, but never really delve into the occult, esoteric, mystical, or even intuitive parts of craft practice. They also vary wildly in terms of the level of commitment implied, from a short moment of reflection or a useful journal prompt to reading or creating an entire book. It is a charming idea, but it left me wondering what the best application for this set of matchsticks is. Some of the suggestions seem ongoing rather than repeatable (like the suggestion to create your own spellbook), while others could be done every day; some of the suggestions would take only a moment, while others could take days or even months. Some are suggestions that seem more contextual than suggestible, such as directing healing energy to a sick friend. While many of us may know someone who is struggling with their health at any given time, this nonetheless strikes me as something that is more often called for by a situation itself than something sparked by an external suggestion.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, \u201cSpark Magic\u201d lives up to its name <\/span><\/span>? <\/span><\/span><\/span>it may help get something started for someone who is entirely new to the practice, but may also seem watered-down to experienced witches looking to specialize or deepen their practice. There is no structure to the suggestions made in \u201cSpark Magic,\u201d and there isn\u2019t much of a theme beyond a loose, modern approach to magic. For a new witch, however, I suspect that this would be a fun gift that could give them some good ideas to get started. It would be especially good for someone who wants to take a slow start to witchcraft, not try too much at once, or not delve into dark or challenging territory, since most of the suggestions aren\u2019t very involved, specific, or occult.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
