Yule has passed, and length of daylight is waxing in my world, though imperceptibly. I know it is, though, because the hens are laying again. I know because the stored onions and garlic are waking. I know because I’m taking inventory of seeds, placing orders, and dreaming of the spring-to-autumn gardens that sustain us. I know because I’m already dreaming of Imbolc, that glorious midpoint between winter and spring, when the waxing daylight turns undeniable, and garden dreams move into garden actions, albeit indoors, on shelves aglow with privileged light.

But now… in the gloom of true winter, it’s a time for me to sink roots deeper and honor the waning darkness, to fully leverage the still-long evenings of rest that are offered. It is a time of suspension, a time of pause, a time that can challenge our patience. It is a time, especially in these strange days of COVID-19, to check in on friends, especially those living alone, as this is when winter can – even in the best of times – offer its worst.

And that is the Medicine in which I shall root my mind, my will, my heart, my actions, and my spirit. I shall tap the Medicine of leveraging the pause of this season, to assess and access (as I strive in every season) the behaviors and actions that bolster meaningful value in life. All life. Yet the magic this year will be rooted in the relationships with the loved ones that I most miss in these strange times. I’ll be doing my best to make postcards, and write love notes to send… to bake and deliver toothsome treats… to trade in the comfortable text for a less comfortable phone call… and then some.

And so it is that I invite you to join me in manifesting simple Medicine ‘n’ magick. How? By doing your best. By reaching out and offering care to loved ones – and strangers, too – as we float suspended in our anticipation of Imbolc, in these early days of true winter.
