Lucy Delics has created a portal to the mysteries into which sacred plant medicine guides us. This is a black and white deck, with intricate line drawings and images described on the box as “psychedelic.” The black and white drawings are alive and animate against solid black backgrounds. With a softened gaze, the drawings move and come alive. The images containing many references to plant medicine – twining vines, mushrooms, blooming flowers, leaves. The symbolism is multi-cultural, with an ancient feel: Norse, Celtic, Egyptian, Incan, Buddhist, Navajo. The only colors on the cards are yellow titles and thin yellow lines between the card image and the purple borders inscribed with intricate patterns of red lines. The black and white images set against the purple ground are striking and intense, full of power and vibration, pulsation and movement. The backs are a black and white hand with multivariant, tattoo-like patterns on a purple background; the index finger presses on a star. The glossy cards follow the R-W-S major arcana names and suits. They measure 3-1/2×5 inches and feel good and solid in my hand. The accompanying booklet is 32 pages, over a third of which is devoted to Lucy Delics’ story of how she came to create the deck following her travels through England, Scotland, Sweden and finally, Peru. She describes her work with sacred plant medicine and how she rediscovered the innate artistry, lost in childhood, that birthed this deck. The booklet provides a few keyword meanings for each upright and reversed card position, and describes several spreads. The two-piece box with bottom and lid is sturdy cardboard.

When I first started working with the cards, I found them frustrating to enter. I wanted the cards to be more “linear.” I realized that I want them to reveal the mysteries of the cosmos! As I have worked with the deck, I have come to love these cards. The imagery poses an invitation to transcend the linear mind and let the images and meanings open up; they operate very much in the realm of the sacred plants – unfolding and taking you along on the intuitive journey, “hooking” the mind’s need to “understand”. They unseal the portals, and blossom and reveal themselves in ways that you cannot dissect with intellect. They invite your intuition to connect with them and understand them in ways that might not make sense to the linear mind. You enter them at one point, thinking you are going in one direction, and they take you somewhere else entirely, down the rabbit hole! I really love the intensity of the black and white drawings, so rich and intricate. This is a deck that surprises; I see something new in the card images each time I look.

This is not a “beginner” deck, unless you want to plunge right into the deep end!
