This month\u2019s column looks at hag stones, also known as fairy stones, <\/span>holey stones, witch stones, Odin stones, and eye stones. They <\/span>are rocks that have naturally occurring holes, worn by water over long periods of time. Because it\u2019s commonly believed magic cannot work on moving water, hag stones are valued because they would be immune to the effects of magic, <\/span>adverse energies, and enchantments, <\/span>yet possess water\u2019s powerful protection and healing energies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The oddity of the stones has made them a focus of folk magic. For centuries witches have used them in spells and rituals for everything from fertility to warding off ghosts. Common folk <\/span>also used the stones \u2026 against witches they believed caused sick cows, hens that stopped laying, and <\/span>fisherman’s<\/span> poor catches.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s said that if you close one eye and peer through the hole of a hag stone with the other, you can access the faerie realm <\/span>without them influencing you. The hole can also provide a connection to<\/span> elemental beings and spirits. Reportedly hag stones were also used as truth or pledge stones \u2013 when looking through these the wearer would know if the other person was telling the truth or lying.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Embellished or left plain, you can wear them around your neck, hang them above windows and doors, and tie them to anything <\/span>\u2013 vehicles, pets, structures \u2013 you want protected. Put them on a key ring or hang from the rear view mirror. Hang above a bed, place under a pillow, or put under a bed for fertility spells or to ward off nightmares. Break up stormy weather by threading a cord through the hole and swinging it around while visualizing dark clouds dissipating. Stringing several together increases their power. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
