A halfway house<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Twixt autumn and winter<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cold for us<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Frozen for others<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yet warm and barely golden<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For some.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So many different Samhains<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So many calls to the dead<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So many nods to ancestors<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mentors<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Friends of fur and feather<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or those family we chose<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For ourselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wherever in the world<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You celebrate the turn<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Towards darkness<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Remember turnips<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Painstakingly carved<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Apple peels thrown over shoulders<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Candles lit while looking in the mirror<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The butter and cream left out<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For those who come<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps uninvited<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But never spurned or mocked.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Be safe<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Walk well<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ward well<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hold close those you love<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Close doors firmly in the face<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of those unwelcome.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What walks abroad<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of fur and feather<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Root and fruit<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Seed and bud<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or blood or bone<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or something beyond<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our Earthly home<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Is nearer now than ever.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Listen to the creak<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of the gate in the wind<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Though the night is still<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or the tapping of a tree<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At the window<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When no tree grows near<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or the howling<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Of a fox<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Though well past<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Their mating season.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Light the lanterns<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Latch the shutters<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Make your hearth<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Your heart tonight<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And share the tales<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The roots of why<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We shudder at<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The loss of light.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
