What Are the Magickal Arts?<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

… As magickal practitioners we are all \u201cartists\u201d in our own ways, honing our skills of creating magick, weaving patterns of energy that affect change and calling to the most Divine of our natures as we align with cosmos, greater earth and all of the many Beings that inhabit those realms. And, I like where this trend is taking us in exploring the craft in all of forms…. <\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s continue honing our skills as we explore the Art of Honoring Our Ancestors\u2026<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When we speak of the Magickal Arts, the focus may go more naturally to the Hermetic disciplines embedded in the practice of the Magickal Arts. These would be astrology, divination (as we discussed last issue), alchemy, etc.. I would like to broaden that definition to include those actions taken when using a singular specific hermetic discipline and\/or combinations of tools and techniques. With this thought in mind, this writing will take a look at how we honor our Ancestors as a form of Magickal Art. This writing is also appropriately timed for this issue of Samhain\u2019s magick and the many ways we celebrate this auspicious turning of the Witch\u2019s Wheel. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Samhain is particularly ripe with talk of the ancestors and honoring the dead and often is an integral part of the celebration. The term \u201cancestor\u201d is used in different ways depending on the intention and your personal perspective. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Generically, the term \u201cancestors\u201d has come to mean those of your lineage, either biologically or culturally, who were at one time incarnate human beings. These are those from whom we claim a legacy in some way and if familial in nature, share the common thread of family history as well. These souls would also be known as ghosts or spirits of the departed. For this writing, this is how I will use the term ancestor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The practice of honoring our familial ancestors has been around for aeons in one form or another. Sometimes that honoring spread out to be inclusive of an entire tribe or clan, each and every individual considered to be a familial ancestor; so deeply embedded was the energy of collective community and shared experience. Regardless of how you choose to honor the ancestors, the constant is that we are the product of that lineage of support in all the ways in which it was given. And, this also implies that the connectivity we experience with our ancestors is universal and so we are also the product of the universality of humanity. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The ancestors may be of your own lineage, meaning departed family or those whom offered guidance during their living human existence. If you expand this further and consider that we are all interconnected as spiritual beings, regardless of blood lines, the Ancestors take on the form of all of the great souls who in their incarnation offered teachings, wisdom, and were examples of illuminated and evolved humans. These are those that exemplified the adage that we are Spiritual beings having a physical experience. Most often when you begin the intention of asking for information of the Ancestors, there is greater comfort in the specificity of inquiring of a departed family member or friend. The personal connection and feeling is what makes the difference between asking for help from a patron or Deity you work with and an ancestor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One of the primary precepts in working with Ancestral wisdom is that of gratitude. Cultivating a space of gratitude becomes the foundation upon which the ways in which you choose to honor and show appreciation for your ancestors organically blossoms and is integrated seamlessly into your spiritual practice and mundane endeavors. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When you have completed the pathworking, spend sometime allowing the experience to integrate and settle within you. You may find that you are called to pull out a photo or token of a beloved ancestor or journal the memory of a joyful recalled experience that arose from the meeting round the cauldron. Follow your instincts and acknowledge that this experience has been one of connection. Spend some time offering up gratitude to your ancestor and to yourself for allowing the space of openness and reciprocity as you and they reached across the veils.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Following a practice as a solitary for 2 years, she dedicated to\u00a0Oak and Willow Coven of The Assembly of the Sacred Wheel Tradition in November of 1996. She received her\u00a01st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th (Elder) degrees within the Assembly Tradition and has served as High Priestess of two ASW covens since Samhain of 2001 and the Winter Solstice of 2015.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nAs a teacher of esoteric and magickal studies\u00a0she uses Energetic Anatomy, Tarot, Astrology, Hermetic Qabala, Eastern Philosophy, and Numerology as the foundations of her diverse selection of workshops and writings for more than 25\u00a0years. Exploration of varied energetic protocol has been the focus of her work for some time now and the information gained through direct experience informs all of her magickal and spiritual work.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
