{"id":30643,"date":"2024-10-19T20:54:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-20T00:54:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/?p=30643"},"modified":"2024-10-19T20:54:25","modified_gmt":"2024-10-20T00:54:25","slug":"weylands-whey-october-19th-2024-column-the-difference-between-halloween-and-samain-part-two-conclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paganpages.org\/emagazine\/2024\/10\/19\/weylands-whey-october-19th-2024-column-the-difference-between-halloween-and-samain-part-two-conclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Weyland&#8217;s Whey, October 19th 2024 Column: The Difference Between Halloween and Samain, Part Two, Conclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For Your Deliberation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To me, Samhain focuses on a different type and aspect of death than does Halloween.\u00a0 It&#8217;s more familial than scary.\u00a0 Samhain is for moving on into what&#8217;s next instead of hanging around here on this side of the veil making trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u00a0<em>are<\/em> exceptions&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waiting for the Dark<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The houses in our neighborhood share a big leafy backyard which is crisscrossed by a warren of short bridges and long pathways.\u00a0 Lots of trees, almost woodsy, it hosts a murder of crows, a dray or two of squirrels and an alarming number of very bold skunks.\u00a0 We have lights back there, but after twilight it can get pretty gloomy.<\/p>\n<p>The other night I took Delinquent the dog for her evening stroll.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t get too far before I could feel a presence.\u00a0 Not from one of the houses.\u00a0 From the trees and greenery.\u00a0 We went a few steps more and the feeling grew stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Delinquent is not just my pet, she&#8217;s one of my familiars, and I looked down to get her opinion.\u00a0 She was looking up and me and I could tell she felt it too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well,&#8221; I said aloud.\u00a0 &#8220;It\u00a0<em>is\u00a0<\/em>October.\u00a0 The veil is getting thinner all the time now.\u00a0 It could be real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Delinquent agreed.\u00a0 We turned around and she led the way back home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thanks, Mom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mom was a remarkable woman.\u00a0 She raised me all by herself before it was fashionable to do so.\u00a0 We were poor, but I never realized it.\u00a0 Mom worked hard, and we always had enough food, plenty of books and lots and lots of love in our home.\u00a0 She led by example, and showed me how to value hard work, fortitude and honesty.\u00a0 And she taught me to never, ever give up on what I feel is right and important.\u00a0 Considering what she had to work with, she did a d*mn good job with me.\u00a0 She died at the age of 104.\u00a0 A good life, one well lived.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUSIC Review<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Veil is Thin at Samhain <\/em>by\u00a0Flora Ware, with Heidi McCurdy.\u00a0 From Flora&#8217;s album\u00a0<em>Songs for the Wheel of the Year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simply awesome.\u00a0 Google the video.<\/p>\n<p>5 broomsticks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two More Names for the Townie Roll of Honor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The guys and gals who help me look good every month!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Thinker.<\/em>\u00a0 He&#8217;s the third man in my triad of techies.\u00a0 To say he&#8217;s great with computers is an understatement.\u00a0 Thinker should be working for Google or Wayne Enterprizes or something like that.\u00a0\u00a0<em>And\u00a0<\/em>the SOB is better looking than I am!\u00a0 Life is unfair.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cyn.
