Magical Names

Magical names are unique to you. They represent you within your capacity to spending time within the Astral. When you are in Circle, it’s important to use a Magical Name, especially if you’ve been dedicated with a Magical Name; otherwise, Deity won’t recognize you. Magical Names can come to you easily or with a degree of difficulty. Regardless, how you obtain your Magical Name, it is always suggested to keep it the same or augment it with additional names over time and as you progress in your Craft.

My Magical Name is Lord Fairy Bottom Educifer. It has a queer connation to it, although it wasn’t meant to be. I got my name from Midsummer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare. The first Sabbat I ever took part in was Midsummer and we were reading excerpts from the play. I was to recite the parts of “Nick Bottom, the Weaver”… When I asked who he was? I was told he was turned into an ass by the Queen of the Fairies.

At the time, I had never read this play, so I questioned, “Huh? Fairy? Bottom? Huh?” and with that, my mentor named me “Fairy Bottom” as my Magical Name. Later, after attaining my 2nd Degree elevation, I was able to tack on the title “Lord” and then after my 3rd Degree elevation, I added a last name, Educifer. I had pondered that last name for several years before making it “official”.

Educifer stems from two base words – ‘educ’ and ‘ifer’. ‘Educ’ comes from the base word for education. And ‘ifer’ is a base word for ‘bringer of’. If you’re familiar with the name “Lucifer”, it means ‘bringer of light’. Light stems from ‘lux’ or also spelled ‘luc’ and ‘ifer’ means to bring forth, as I understand my high school Latin of the early 80’s.

So let’s see what you could do to create a Magical Name for yourself. You can choose one based on a God or Goddess you appreciate. If you like a certain color, it can be a part of your Magical Name. It can correspond to a Totem Animal. You can even make it match the numerological vibration of your mundane name.

Gods/Goddesses – I know a male Witch who likes Pan and Eros… He chose Panos as his Magical Name. I have known many others, who have used other god-like names as part of their Magical Name. You can pick a favorite Deity’s name as your Magical Name.

Color? You can incorporate a simple color for a name or you could use a variation of a color as a name. Instead of the color red, try “Magenta”. Instead of blue, try “Azure”. Instead of yellow, try “Golden”. Ultimately, any color has a secondary name to it that might be alluring to you somehow.

I know a person, who loves a chocolate and her favorite flower is the rose. She goes by the name “Chokorose”. Another person uses the name of his favorite Tree as his Magical Name, Birch. Some folks receive their Magical Names during Meditations or other spiritual visions. When you see a bear with wings flying thru the air, you call him Gliding Bear. If you have a special Totem Animal and you have a special talent, you could use a name like my friend, OtterDance. Do you have a special Tradition or aspect of Magical Life? Go with a Magical Name that befits it, like Stregha or Gypsy.

I helped a friend choose his Magical Name by asking him what he likes and what kind of Totem Animals he often comes across. Using the genus name mixed with a talent for gardening became Lepus Earthtiller.

My own mentor likes Vetiver as a Plant/Herb, so she added an A to the end and she uses Vetivera. Do you have a favorite phase of the Moon? Lilith could be a great name. How about using a Spice and a flower part? ClovePetal, Cinnabud or Chocapod could be viable suggestions…

If you have an affinity with certain letter combinations of the alphabet, you could come up with all sorts of combinations. I named my first familiar Jaika-Dahl. I also had a big fat, black cat named Gizmo, but his Magical Name was Pan-Thor, because he looked just like a panther. Magical Names aren’t just for humans, you know…

Oh, one time I helped a woman come up with her Magical Name by spelling her name backwards… well, at least the sounds. And it worked for her. Her name was Sheri so phonetically she became “Iresh” (pronounced ‘ee-resh’).

Do you have a stage name or a nick-name of some sort that might work, too…? Could that be a Magical Name? Remember, you can change letters around, add and subtract letters and even spell things backwards.

C can be a K…. Candy to Kandy

I and E could be a Y… Cindy to Cyndi or Women to Womyn

Add a Z to S… Suzanna to Zsuzanna

B and V are interchangeable… and so are W and V. T and D are interchangeable… ‘Water’ could become ‘Vader’.

So it’s a matter of figuring out what you like, where you are in life and who you are magically… Do you have a favorite Deity? Herb? Plant? Totem Animal? Color? Element?

You have so many options and variations when it comes to creating your own Magical Name. It should roll off the tongue easily and you should have little difficulty signing your Magical Name. And if you have an ‘I’ in your Magical Name, you can easily replace dot above the ‘I’ with a Star. If you already have a Magical Name, share with us how you created it or how it came to you.
