Musings From the Mossy Trail

Autumn Musings

There’s something very magical about autumn. Perhaps it’s the myriad of Nature’s colors; rustic oranges, hushed reds, and tinted greens. Or the faint whispers and soothing sounds that carry on the cool morning breeze, sending messages of times gone by. Promises of what is yet to come.

This is the season when my yearning to live deep within the forest is the greatest. To transform the siding and shingles of my home into a mystical stone cottage with thatched roof, where oak scented smoke billows from a great chimney. Lush, plentiful gardens of autumn splendor would grow in my woodland dwelling. Carrots, kale, winter squash, and pumpkins would nestle among the many herbs. And a few feet away, in a large clearing, would stand a beautiful apple tree, whose fruit would stock my cupboards with canned delicacies.

I may not have all of this…yet. But I do have many blessings for which to be thankful. Family, friends, love and plenty of everything. For these are the gifts of the Harvest Mother, strong, resilient and giving. It is her song that we hear rustling through dried corn stalks; a lullaby to sooth and calm. Her arms tenderly cradle and guide the earth into a restful winter sleep, while at the same time lovingly calling out the last of the summer harvest.

It is with deepest gratitude that we include her in our many feasts, celebrations, and autumn rituals. Wishing a blessed Mabon to all.
