Beautiful Dreamer

The night kitty Tabitha returned home from being spayed, we set her up in the office room with a little bed and nearby bowls of food and water. Around midnight, I was awakened by something at my feet. It was Tabitha, curled up around her Elizabethan collar and fast asleep. How she made it up the pet ramp to get to us with that collar on I’ll never know. She must have really wanted to join us. I scratched her fur with my fingertips, gently, so I wouldn’t wake her. Still asleep, Tabitha wrapped her forelegs around my hand and pulled it close against her little chest, content. That’s my kind of magic.

TV Review

Sherlock & Daughter

It’s 1896, and the brilliant detective is searching for his best friend Dr. Watson and his landlady Mrs. Hudson, who have been kidnapped and are being held captive by a criminal organization known only as the Red Thread. Holmes is joined by Amelia Rojas, who tells him she needs his help in solving her mother’s recent murder–and that he is her long-lost father.

How can you not love a premise like this one? David Thewlis and Blu Hunt star.

Premiered April 16th, 2025. 8 episodes. CW and Discover +.  Wednesdays, 9 PM EST.

FILM REVIEW

The Ghost of Frankenstein

Cedric Hardwicke and Lon Chaney Jr. star, as does Bela Lugosi (yeah, that Bela Lugosi) as Ygor. It’s the 4th film in Universal’s Frankenstein series and the first to have Chaney portraying the Monster.

Although these films were extremely popular in their time, nowadays you have to be a fan of these old horror flicks to truly enjoy them. I adjust my ratings accordingly, to better match them with modern tastes.

PODCAST Review

DruidCast: The Order of Bards, Ovates & Druids

Hosted by Damh the Bard (the “h” in his name is silent). He gets some great guests and lectures. Every episode I’ve heard starts off with a song. The Druid tradition is explored in depth, as is Celtic mythology and history, along with reviews and competitions. There is an archive of more than 170 episodes. I’m a fan and I listen to new episodes whenever I can.

My verdict: 5 broomsticks.

Wey’s Predictions

(He’s been wrong about everything else!)

Insect population is declining in parts of the world, like sections of Europe and the Northern Hemisphere. Pollinator insects–bees, butterflies, moths–are disappearing due to key factors such as habitat loss from urbanization, agriculture and deforestation, climate change and pollution at such an amount it’s being referred to as an “insect apocalypse”. What’s that to us? You like to eat? If we lose native pollinators, human food resources could be threatened. The whole ecosystem could be changed at an unbelievable level. Even the landscapes would look different. And this loss is happening now. Today.

As this continues, we will hear more about it. Lots more. Not just on educational TV, but in the mainstream news. I’m talking headlines. A future without enough insects would be pretty bleak.

My Townies and I will have several Roundtable discussions about this topic!

I first learned of this problem on the 4-part PBS series “Bugs That Rule the World”, which premiered Wednesday May 7th. 10-11pm EST. I consider this essential viewing, Pilgrims. Trust me.
