Weyland’s Whey Mabon 2025 Column

Mabon

This year Mabon will arrive on Monday, September 22nd. It’s the second harvest on the Wheel of the Year.  (Lughnasadh is first, Samhain is third), and it celebrates feasting, giving thanks, and preparation for Winter.

Mabon Activities

Try a nice, quiet walk outdoors. Helpful hint: don’t take along a dachshund, unless you’re collecting ulcers. Delinquent barks at everything. Now, since my heart attack, I’d like to think she’s actually trying to “protect” me against (to her) perceived threats, but a stroll with her is far from tranquil. I reserve walks with my little girl (three or four times a day, Pilgrim–puppies need exercise!) for times I can concentrate on her, not trying to get my mind serene.

Make a broomstick for home or altar. My brooms all look store bought, cause they are. A wytch has to know his limitations, and artsy/craftsy I’m not.

Go apple picking. I’m a city pagan, but Sparkle loves to visit autumn orchards.

Host or hostess a Mabon dinner. Sparkle is doing turkey this year. Yum yum yummy!

Spend time with loved ones. Friends, family and fur kids. (“Heel, Delinquent!”) Sheesh…

Do a reflection ritual. I’m thinking mirrors, but Sparkle tells me I’m too literal.

Blog or journal about what Mabon means to you. Avoid name calling and profanity, this is a family Sabbat.

Craft a gratitude ritual. After the way this year went down, I’m just happy to be alive and upright! I thank the Deities often. And not just on the Sabbats…

Make a Mabon altar. We have altars–of sorts–in almost every room. But there’s always room for one more. Mabon colors include brown, orange, red and yellow. Oh, and dark green too!

MUSIC Review

Heartbeat of Harvest, by Cernunnos Rising.

Awesome music, awesome lyrics. Both perfect for Mabon! Check it out!

5 broomsticks.

Happy Mabon!

Color Schemes

Yellow is a power color, often linked to joy, productivity and cheer. It’s great for protection and attracting wealth, too. (Not just greenbacks, you greedy little Pilgrim you.) And don’t forget creativity, communication and decision making. Yellow rocks!

FILM Review

The Bad Seed was an American psychological horror film. It starred Nancy Kelly and Patty McCormack, as well as Henry Jones and Eileen Heckart.

Plot: a mother begins to suspect that her eight-year-old daughter is a serial killer. Spoiler: Mom’s right.

A classic based on a 1954 play by the same name–which was based on a 1954 book of the very same name. This title had legs!

1956. Black and white.

4 1/2 broomsticks.

(Saw it on Svengoolie, learned more about it on Wikipedia.)

No Place Like Home

“Hello, Mr. Wilson!”

6:30 a.m. Weyland is in the living room, watching the local news.

Sparkle calls from the next room: Wey. come quick!

Weyland tosses his remote onto the couch and hobbles over to her as fast as he can: I’m here, baby! What’s wrong?

Sparkle points out the window: Look, that nice Mr. Wilson is out walking already!

Weyland is hanging onto the back of her chair for support: You’re kidding me, right?

Sparkle: He’s your age! See how fast he’s walking? You should be out there too!

Wey squints outside. Mr. Wilson is just passing the cul-de-sac, power walking like a 40 year old.

Sparkle: That’s inspiring! What are you doing to get better?

Weyland (sputtering): I’m goin’ out to congratulate that rat b*st*rd personally!

Wey hobbles outside, shaking his fist over his head: D*mmit, Wilson, you’re making the rest of us look bad! Get the frack outta here! Go walk somewhere else!

Wilson doesn’t even hear him. He powerwalks around a bend in the road and disappears, oblivious to Weyland behind him.

Wey stops, gasping for air. He bends over and hangs onto his knees.

Weyland (croaking): And stay out!
