Communing with the Essence

Relating with Raindrops and Communing with Cups of Tea; The Ecstatic Dance of Life —

Our mind is not the only part of ourselves that communicates. A hot cup of tea communicates; maybe through a warning indicating, “careful hot”, or maybe through a comforting warmth or a soothing relaxation, maybe it signals, “it is time for self”. It has been raining these past few days and the rain is communicating with my body. It is not always pleasant or soothing, sometimes it’s distracting and unwanted. Just like Nature, all of Life is communicating with us. Our past, our present, and our future communicates. Parts of ourselves we wish would go away and things we wish we would forget all communicate too, even our dreams and aspirations for our future. We are constantly receiving and relaying messages. Life is about relating.

Relationships are how we engage with Life. Life sends signals and we send signals back. Relating is a reciprocal and fluid exchange of information, sometimes subtle and unrecognizable, and other times overpowering and overwhelming. Our belly sends information to the brain and the brain to the chest. The heart sends information to the pelvis and the pelvis to our throat. Every cell in our body and atom in the Universe, from the mycelium to the stars, are relaying messages. From the tiny microscopic to the gigantic Tsunami-like ripples, Life is always communicating.

We overlook and sensor out much of this communication in order to function and survive. Over sensory load of constant stimuli bombards our nervous system and dysregulates our body until we shut down. Too much of anything is too much. The miraculous design of our body’s intelligence has built into its organic nature ways to focus and disregard information. Our brain and body separates, compartmentalizes, and organizes data into filing systems as a way to filter and process its memory. Oftentimes we forget to declutter and degunk these old “boxes” of information and they become the stuff that bombards our system and causes us distress. That is until we notice and give them our attention with care.

Have you ever thought you were over something and then it pops up triggering an emotional response in your body? Have you felt like you were done with some coping mechanism, behavior, or belief only to find it comes back after some time apart? Just like all of Life is communicating, we are also storing and processing repeatedly, much of the time unaware. The difficult things we usually suppress, deny, avoid, attack and attempt to kill. The pleasant things we like to store for safekeeping, nostalgia, and comfort for as long as we can, perhaps because deep down we know things end and people die. Our bodies are recording information and conversations endlessly. We don’t always know or remember these recordings. Every cell in our body is in relationship with its environment, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. We are recording data through the world of connection and communication.

When we allow our awareness to connect, expand and contract unhindered, naturally, and freely, we start to feel the reciprocity of us and Life again. We tune into the outward and inward dialogue, moving within and beyond, spoken or audible language. The language is energetic and vibrational. Much of the blaming and shaming evaporates and a wave of energy washes over us through our insides, like a laboring mother’s contractions. The wave builds and peeks before making its way down and dissolving back into the sea of our felt body’s ocean of awareness. The ocean is like our eternal presence and the waves are the received and transmitted impulses. The ocean knows the waves are also the ocean and so it denies none. The waves eventually stop resisting and forgetting, finally knowing that they too will eventually return to the ocean once again. This dialogue becomes our love letter to Life. It is through our aliveness, connection, and reciprocity we get to experience the fullness of ourselves through relationships with Life.

Let’s go on a little journey together. If it is safe to do so, close your eyes. Breathe into your heart center and breathe out through your heart center. Feel your body resting on a surface, maybe you are sitting and you can feel your back or sit bones on the surface you are resting upon or maybe you are standing and you feel your strong spine and your feet touching the floor? Allow yourself to feel whatever you are making contact with through whatever part of your body you can tune into the strongest. What are you touching? What does it feel like? Can you surrender and give more of yourself and your awareness to this? Can you let it hold you even more? Can you also feel how this surface that you are touching is also touching you? You are touching the sofa and the sofa is touching you. ?? You are touching the floor and the floor is touching you. This is reciprocity. The toucher is also being touched. They blend into one another and dissolve the barriers of separation. Rest in the loving awareness, as Ram Dass would say.

Now imagine you are walking into a Forest. You are walking and touching the Forest floor through your steps and the Forest floor is also touching you. Feel this interplay of electrical dialogue. You and the Forest are weaving tiny threads of connection with every step.

Let’s imagine it starts to rain; soft, warm, and gentle rain. Feel the rain touching your skin. Receive its touch completely. Allow your skin or tongue to also touch the rain. Can you feel the rain on your cheeks, lips, and eyelids? Can you feel it on the flesh of your arms? Allow yourself to feel this connection. You and the rain are sending signals to one another through shared aliveness.

Now imagine you are on a comfy couch. Your body tucked softly underneath a cozy blanket fresh out of the warm sunshine or dryer. Feel the softness and comfort. Touch the blanket and let the blanket touch you. You can bring the blanket up to your face and gently brush it up against your skin. Smell the lovely fragrance of the blanket, clean and fresh. Breathe the smell into your body and breathe out connecting back to your blanket and the environment around you.

Connection is not only through our flesh or touch, any more than language is only through our mind and words. Connection is through our breath, hearing, feeling, smelling, seeing, tasting, as well as through our sense of balance, intuition, even imagination. We connect through danger and safety, pain and ease. We connect to our past, our joyful inner-child, our troubled inner-child, our free-spirited adolescent, and our wise elder. We connect to our fears of the future, our dreams, prayers, intentions, and worries. We even connect through our separations. We connect through loss, death, and endings. Isn’t it strange and fascinating that we can connect with loss and separation? Separation is not disconnection. Separation is the connection with separation.

There is no place, connection cannot travel. We can connect with Animals, Planets, Holy Figures, Fungi, Plants, Fire, Water, Earth, and Water. We can connect with Stones, Mountains, Valleys, Cities, and the Countryside. Connection goes beyond our logical understanding. You cannot prove or measure it concisely. It goes beyond our intellect and scientific experiments. Connection goes beyond space and time. Right now you could decide to connect, using all of your senses, to a loved one, even a pet that is deceased. You could feel, see, hear, even smell them. You can experience this connection right here, right now. You can even receive a message and of course convey a message to them as well.

This reciprocity of communication goes both ways, in and out. It touches every aspect of our life. Like an ocean wave that affects the moon tides and the ripples that spiral out from a single stone cast out upon a lake, our relationships do the same. Life affects Life. We are made of this Divine communion. It is our relationships, inward and outward, that give meaning to our lives. How else does the ocean know itself, if not, through its waves and what lies beneath? How else does God or the Universe know itself, if not through its infinite children and forms? Rest in this loving awareness for a while. Tune into Life’s reciprocal communication. You are not separate. You are deeply plugged in and part of the whole tapestry of Life. You are part of this ecstatic dance! Enjoy the connection and communication!
