Finding the Pagan Way
A Conversation with the Muse I found myself in a large cave, and my goddess, who as you may know is also my muse, was looking every inch a faery queen. Her beauty always leaves me breathless. She seemed to be wearing a circlet of pearls woven into a silver band made from many fine strands. The strands of silver seemed to branch out from the core and formed interweaving spirals, between the pearls. Her ebony hair flowed down into the shadows and her deep brown eyes filled my mind with half-forgotten memories of sun-drenched foliage and warm moist air. “You have not visited us for a while”, She said…

In the Words of Mama Bear
What Goes on in Putting Together a Pagan Festival Mama Bear hopes you all had a wonderful Yule. Now that everything has settled down, with the holiday season, I hope you’re enjoying a calm, restful time of the year. Most people I know enjoy the winter months as a time for drawing inward, introspection, and self-work. Not this Mama Bear! Between classes and festival preparation, it seems as if every day is a new and magical adventure! Someone asked me what it takes to put on a pagan festival, so… What goes on in producing a Pagan festival: time, money, blood, sweat, tears and a lot of coffee. (Hail Caffinea!)…

Land Spirits in the Works of H.R.E. Davidson
The republication of Hilda Roderick Ellis’ (later Davidson) The Road to Hel, published initially in 1943, was an exciting event. It was one of the first attempts to correlate archaeological evidence with the data from surviving literature on the Norse views of the afterlife, the soul, the cult of the dead, and the journey to the land of the dead. I read it through with avidity, and only afterwards noticed that I already possess three other books by her on similar subjects, spanning her career from 1943 to 1993. I decided to take one topic, the land spirits. Over the course of fifty years, the author’s familiarity with archæological data…

Sacred Places, Sacred Spaces
The Temple of Dendur/Dendura/Denderah (Photo credit: touregypt.net) This beautiful shrine which honors the Goddess Isis, was part of a larger temple dedicated to Hathor. It was originally built on the left bank of the Nile in Nubia during the reign of Augustus Caesar. It was dedicated to both Isis and Osiris to honor the sons of a local Nubian chief. It is also called “Per Rekh en Iset”, meaning “The Place of Knowing of Isis”. The shrine, which stood on a wide stone platform, is small with three rooms, but extremely powerful. There is a portal with a front court and an inner sanctuary. There are carvings of the king…

Short Story: Kiara, Episode 6
KIARA, Episode 6 Kiara stood shocked and bemused for a while, and then her memories started to return. Sensing the change in her, Moira handed her a stout branch from the forest floor. “We need more light, princess”, she said softly. Without thinking, Kiara gazed at the branch as the tip of it started to glow and burst into flame. “What do we need to do?” she asked. Moira looked at her in silence for a moment, trying to choose her words carefully. “We must place protection around the tree, call the guardian and then release any children from the house. Then we must burn the house and all its…

WitchCrafting: Crafts for Witches
Glowing Snow Merry meet. A quick, easy and inexpensive way to bring a bit of winter inside this season is to coat glass candle holders with epsom salt. It’s a project suitable to do with children. Choose an adhesive. It can be anything from Mod Podge to spray adhesive, glue or clear double-sided tape. Apply to it to the outside of the glass and then roll or sprinkle with epsom salt. Salt is sodium chloride and is edible. Epsom salt is not really salt; it’s magnesium sulfate in crystal form, so it looks an awful lot like salt, but it has more sparkle to it. It is not edible.…

Tarot Talk
I love comparing cards! Let’s begin a comparison of The Chariot and Strength by looking at The Chariot of the Major Arcana. First, a quick review. There are 22 Major Arcana cards in a Tarot deck, with numbers from 0 to 21; the Majors usually deal with broader and more far-reaching life experience issues, archetypes that are easy for us to identify with and connect with at some point in our lives. An archetype (pronounced “ark eh type”) is a generic, idealized model of a person, an object, or a concept which can be copied, patterned, or imitated. The term archetype often refers to one of two concepts: a “stereotype,”…
