    Book Review: Psychic Self-Defense

Psychic Self-Defense by  Dion Fortune  © 2001 Red Wheel/Weiser ISBN:  978-1-57863-509-2 272 pages       Paperback        $16.95 (U.S.) This is a classic in the occult literature.  That means that everyone knows it; everyone discusses it; but very few people have ever taken the time to actually READ it.  Of course it is dry reading.  Of course it appears dated (it was originally written in 1930), and difficult to wade through.  None of that, however, is important.  What is important is that Dion Fortune (nee Violet Firth) was both a pioneering psychoanalyst and a practicing ceremonial magician.  This unique perspective allowed her to approach the problem of “psychic attack” from multiple points of…

    MoonOwl Observations

Litha- The Summer Solstice               Litha is the summer solstice and it usually takes place between June 20th and 22nd. It is the longest day of the year since Litha is when the sun reaches its high point in the sky. It is also known as Midsummers night’s eve and stems from Saxon tradition.  It is a low holiday and a lesser sabbat that the majority of modern pagans celebrate. There is some debate as to whether or not ancient pagans celebrated it or not. Of course there are monuments that were built to highlight the rising of the sun on the summer solstice. Stonehenge is the most well…

    Across the Great Divide

“Haunted House for Rent” Haunted houses have been the stuff of local legend for generations; often these stories are exploited by Hollywood. Sometimes, though, there’s nothing fun about the experience, as the thought of sharing a home with an unexpected guest is no laughing matter.               Josue Chinchilla and Michele Callan, of Toms River, New Jersey, filed a lawsuit against their home owner, declaring that the rental property is also the residence of at least one paranormal entity and that this was never disclosed to them before moving in. They believe they had no choice but to flee the property, along with their two…

Myths and Legends: Journeys Through Time

“Arabian niiiiiiiiights, like arabian daaaaaaaaaaays, More often then not, Are hotter than hot in lots of good ways..”~Arabian Nights Disney’s Aladdin 1992-1993. Aladdin is the first Disney movie that I really, really loved. The Little Mermaid was pretty good…but a little bit too long for my taste at the time, and there were a lot of overtones I didn’t understand. Aladdin however… Aladdin made me laugh. Specfically Genie made me laugh. Hey it was Robin Williams..who wouldn’t laugh? I idolized Genie. I told my mom that I wish I could find a magic lamp and have Genie come out of it and hang out with me. It wasn’t…

    Pertho’s Pronouncements

The School of Life   I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the future. My life, in a way, has slowed down. It’s that feeling of the same thing, day after day. But when I look closer, it’s not doing that at all. I’m experiencing new things every day. In other words, every day is not EXACTLY the same, even though the same activities take place, and therefore, my perceptions of them are not the same either. My mind is still taking everything in, and I’m finding myself looking inward more and more.   The time in which we are human has been compared to being in school. When we…

Witches’ Paradigms, Part Three, Section One

The Ogham Tree Calendar and the Rune of Amergin: Introduction through Fearn The Ogham Tree Alphabet:  In the old time, when the children of Danu still lived in the East in their cities of Falias, Gorias, Finias and Murias, the Ever- living Ones guarded their four treasures and grew and prospered. “Ogma was the most handsome of the Children of Danu…To him fell the gift of honeyed words, of poetry and of languages, and he it was who devised how man could write in a form of calligraphy, which was named after him as Ogham” (Ellis, p. 27).  The following illustrates the Ogham script, which is thought by most scholars…

    Hally’s Hints

All is Quiet in the Spiritual World… or is it?   It has been a quiet time in the spiritual world. This does not mean that nothing has taken place, rather that the shifts are not affecting the conscous directly and are aligning themselves with the planets, animals and with the unconscious. An indication of this is having over sensitivity, more people flying off the handle with certain comments or feeling an increase of negativity.   I have been advising for the past six months, if not longer, that these shifts are not going to stop anytime soon. They will intensify however, in the world of energy this intensity is…

    June Correspondences

The sixth month of the Gregorian Calender, June is the first month of summer. June derives it’s name from the Roman Goddess Juno. Her Greek counterpart is Hera. The traditional birthstone amulets of June are alexandrite, moonstone, and pearl; and the rose is the month’s traditional flower. June is shared by the astrological signs of Gemini the Twins and Cancer the Crab, and is sacred to the following Pagan deities: Juno, and all gods and goddesses who preside over love, passion, and beauty. During the month of June, the Great Solar Wheel of the Year is turned to the Summer Solstice, one of the four Lesser Sabbats celebrated each year…

Consillium Ratzon or Rite of the Phoenix

I invoke Thee, the Mighty One, The Bird of Wand that ascends to the skies. Thee, Thee I invoke! For I am the wanderer of Wisdom and Love, I ascend to the Will of Fires and Scourge. Beat me with the winds of the four quarters, Cleanse me in the soils of the Earth, Shed your tear drops over me! Thee, Thee I invoke! For I am the wanderer of Wisdom and Love, I ascend through the veil of Death, Make me the conqueror of the unknown. I am he of the conjurer of spirits! I call you forth in this blessed space of Will! Thee, Thee I invoke! Make…
