Book Review: Old Style Conjure- Hoodoo, Rootwork and Folk Magic by Starr Casas

I was quite excited to have the opportunity to review this book. It’s a subject that I’ve been curious about, but haven’t read about as much as I would have liked. There was a great Foreward by Orion Foxwood who is an author and conjure worker as well, then we get into the Introduction, which Casas writes “I am going to try and write in a way even the novice worker will understand, and the information will also maybe help the seasoned worker as well. I feel that it is important for this work to be passed on, as many of the elders are passing and with them the…

    Sacred Art Video

SWAN MAIDEN’S SONG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIRn_ciIoAA Have you ever had a life-changing dream?! In a dream I had in Sweden summer 2017 I was shown the soul journey of a Swan Maiden and her infant son after she died in childbirth. I was mystified and did some research. This took me to the town of Vedbaeck in Denmark, just north of Copenhagen. In 1975 a Mesolithic era cemetery was discovered here. The body of a young woman (aged about 18) was found with the body of a premature baby boy. It is presumed that she and her son died in childbirth. The baby was cradled in a whooper swan wing and he…

    Solstice Releases and Intentions

At this time of year, my inner wise one (A.K.A High Self or Dreamer) wants to slow down to the pace of cracking ice.  All I want to do as folks buzz around buying gifts is to journey to the centre of the planet where I can dream with the Earth Mother.  I want to engage in the Norse tradition of hygge and regain balance. Often, I do any Christmas preparations in November so I can have this time in December for introspection and slowing down. Ancient peoples, of course, knew that the winter solstice was a powerful time for dreaming and connecting with the inner wise one.  In my home, we…

    Tarot Talk

The Queen of Cups   (The Queen of Cups Card is from the artist Ciro Marchetti http://www.ciromarchetti.com/)**   We haven’t talked about the Court Cards of the Tarot in a while, so this month we will examine a Tarot “royal,” the Queen of Cups. First, let’s review some information about the royal family of the Tarot. A Tarot deck has 78 cards. There are 22 Major Arcana cards, with numbers from 0 to 21; the Majors usually deal with broader and more far-reaching life experience issues, archetypes that are easy for us to identify with and connect with at some point in our lives. There are 56 Minor Arcana cards that…

    The Kitchen Witch

Bountiful Beef Salad I eat salad every day. Usually for lunch, but sometimes for dinner, my salads are small meals in and of themselves. My base salad is a bowl of mixed greens, sliced red onion or Vidalia, slices of seedless cucumber, garbanzo beans and chunks of cheese – usually sharp New York State Cheddar, but sometimes Colby-Jack or Swiss. Depending on what I have on hand, I may add chunked or sliced tomatoes, salad shrimp, pieces of cooked chicken, ham or turkey, albacore tuna, avocado, sliced green pepper, celery, carrot or whatever other strikes my fancy. One thing I always thought was strange – you see salads with almost…

Celebrating the Old Ways in New Times

Celebrating the Old Ways in New Times January 2018 Bright Blessings, and Happy 2018! Time flies when you are an old adult, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday, I was looking forward to Summer Solstice! I write this on Winter Solstice 2017, and my Yule gathering is two days away. We are rearranging the menu and scheduling rides for everybody. As it is in between Sabbats, I get to pick a topic! I decided to write about Winter itself. Specifically, I’d like to write some Winter survival tips. Unlike some people like my husband- who LIVE for winter (psychos!), the rest of us suffer various issues due to cold…

Book Review: Sacred Plant Initiations – Communicating with Plants for Healing and Higher Consciousness by Carole Guyett

This is a very sincere and beautiful book, about ceremonial work in a magical place. It is based on decades of personal experience working closely with plants and their spirits. The author uses her own unique method, (that is to say: I had not heard of it before!), called plant dieting. Essentially this involves making an elixir from parts or extracts of the physical plant and then drinking this ceremonially as well as (intentionally and intensely!) connecting with the spirit of the plant for a certain amount of time. Generally speaking this is done ceremonially as a group while people are fasting during that time. That fact alone will bring…

She Who is All – The Goddess of Ten Thousand Names

Themis Statue of Themis at Chuo University (Photo Credit: Brittanica.com) The Goddess Themis – We see her everywhere as the personification of blind justice. Her image is used in courtrooms, attorney’s offices, anywhere justice is served. As one of the Titans, She was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus, and is the representation of the natural and moral order of everything, which was extremely important to the ancient Greeks. She was the second wife of Zeus, and as the Goddess of Wisdom, sat at his right hand as one of his councilors. Her name “Themis” means “divine law”, and it was She who instructed mankind in the laws of justice…

    GoodGod!

Meet the Gods: Boreas     Merry meet. When the wind would blow and the windows or the screen door would startle her dog, my aunt would say, “That’s Maria,” referring to Kingston Trio song from the ’60s, “They Call The Wind Maria.” When you hear the cold north wind blow this winter, you can call it Boreas, the Greek god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter. His name meant “North Wind” or “Devouring One” and is the source of the adjective boreal, meaning of, relating to, or located in the northern region. Like Maria, he will wail, whine, blow the stars around and set the…
