    The Sober Pagan

The Issue of Powerlessness It’s a beautiful fall day and I am on my way to an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting. It’s not easy for me to get to meetings, because I don’t have a car and public transportation in the Western New York area leaves a lot to be desired. To attend a one-hour meeting means traveling at least forty-five minutes to an hour each way on the bus. For years, this dead time on the bus kept me from attending meetings at all and of course, I invariably ended up drinking again. I had to get real with myself – what’s the difference between wasting time with public…

Book Review: Baldr’s Magic – The Power of Norse Shamanism and Ecstatic Trance by Nicholas Brink

Baldr’s Magic – The Power of Norse Shamanism and Ecstatic Trance By Nicholas Brink       I agreed to review this book because Baldr (or Balder/Baldur) is a Norse god I have a strong personal connection to.   On the positive side I will say that anyone seeking a strong connection to their ancestors and ancestral faith and traditions needs encouragement – in whatever way they decide to do this. The author certainly describes a very personal quest and invites others to make a similar journey into the past (even the ancient undocumented past of Early Europe).   He works for the Cuyamunge Institute which promotes the original research…

Book Review- Victor H Anderson: An American Shaman by Cornelia Benavidez

Victor H Anderson: An American Shaman Author: Cornelia Benavidez Publisher: Megalithica Books from Immanion Press Copywrite: 2017 Length: 308 pages     This book is a full transcript of interview tapes that the author had with Mr. Anderson and his wife, Cora. It also contains the family tree (ancestry) of Victor H Anderson on both his mother and father’s side. It also has the lineage of the Native American line in his heritage.   At times this book can be a bit confusing to read because in different questions about his legacy, Mr. Anderson does repeat himself and the Ms. Benavidez wrote it as he spoke it on the tapes of…

    Samhain’s Call

Crackling leaves are burning Transformed from life to death The crow calls out relentlessly To those unseen and life withers In the blasting of its issue.   The Crone’s outstretched hand Pulls me tightly to her breast The air chills at her touch Long icy fingers tapping out The heart beat of life’s pulse within.   The solemn silence of darkness The pause of silent breath Power and strength drawn From the sinewy strands of time.   Quartered path of gravel and stone Flesh and blood Moonlight and stars The wellspring of Earth The light of the cosmos above.   I tremble within Her embrace Form giving way to the…

    The Naked Goddess

The Naked Goddess   (Last month’s cover of PaganPageOrg, Goddess by Angie Yelton At FalconFire Ceramics Studio)   The censoring of female Goddess bodies is apparently not a new thing. While Greek and Roman Gods had their genitals lovingly crafted, in all shapes, ages and sizes, there is no hint of a cleft on the white marble. It symbolises the Greek, then later Roman idea that women must (especially in public) be silent. While this silence of your vulvic voice is not new, taboo is always, always drawn from something powerful and sacred. At least to James Frazier.   Greece bronze-age culture seems to be the turning point from the Minoan, Egyptian…

    Savoury Pumpkin Bread

Pumpkin Bread (Savoury) I love baking with yeast. It’s so organic. It’s literally alive. I prefer it for rituals and celebrations. I like how difficult, how much personality can seem to be infused, batch to batch, bread to bread! I do use fast acting easy yeast, BUT I also like to give them a little more love, a little more time than most yeast instructions say. There are really two part to this bread. One is the cultivation of the yeast, the backbone of the bread and the other is forming it into a loaf. You can, I suppose, use your bread maker but I think it misses the point.…

    GoodGod!

Meet the Gods: Hades   (art by Samantha Sullivan)   Merry meet.   As the wheel turns to Samhain, it is natural turn to deities of the dark, of the underworld. This month we get to know Hades.   A god with a place that shares his name, Hades is thought to be the god of death – in the Greek pantheon, that was Thanatos. Rather, Hades invites all to join him in his kingdom, the underworld. Hades is not hell, it’s the place all who die go.   Wanting a bride, Hades is said to have asked Zeus for one of his daughters and was offered Persephone. On one…
