Reaching Reiki

Welcome to this month’s Reaching Reiki column. This month’s topic is Self Healing. The holiday season is stressful for many, and brings to mind the need for us to remember to care for ourselves as we are thinking of others. Malls, in particular, are sources of negative energy. Family tensions can recur during extended holiday visits. Money woes can affect our decisions when purchasing gifts. All can affect our energy system in negative ways. Self care and energetic self healing are most important this time of year.
So how is this done? For a Reiki practitioner, remembering to use Reiki on oneself is sometimes a chore in itself. We tend to put ourselves last, taking care of everyone else first and then collapsing into bed at the end of the day, having forgotten to channel ourselves some healing energy. Reiki energy is primarily for self healing, but it’s easy to put that aside when we are so busy during the holidays. Ironically, this is the time it is most beneficial for us. Reiki energy can help release negative energy, clear one’s aura, release emotional blockages, and help one radiate a positive light to others. Stress is easier to manage, and less is absorbed when one is in a balanced state.
Other ways to incorporate self healing into one’s life include:
- Meditation – even short breaks to close the eyes and tune in can help one shed stress and become balanced. Take 3-5 minutes in the middle of the day for inducing quiet time within and see the way it affects the rest of your day. Just clear your thoughts, tune in, and breathe.
- Breathe – stop several times during the day to check in with yourself. How are you breathing? Be sure it is from the lower diaphragm, full and deep. Make an effort to take slow, deep breaths, because the oxygen in your system is cleansing for the entire body and mind. Consciously breathing deeply can help you give your body, spirit and mind a break from whatever you’re facing.
- Ground yourself – if you’re feeling crazed, stop and stand firmly. Imagine tree roots growing down from the soles of your feet into the earth. Visualize those roots extending downward, deep past the earth’s core. Consciously pull energy up the roots back into your body, up your legs and into your body, up to your heart. Just give yourself a few minutes to experience this, and the stress will melt away. You’ll feel strong and able to handle anything that comes at you.
Wishing you all balance, blessings of the season and a wonderful start to 2010. With love and light,
