Shadow Seer Tarot: A Night Vision & Dark Archetype Deck is a dark, and somewhat macabre Tarot deck that is geared towards the dark side of each tarot card. Many believe that each card in a tarot deck, like people, has a dark, or shadow side, and Carl Jung’s works are the foundation of this belief. Dark Archetypes, such as those used to represent the inverted side’s energy of a tarot card, are commonly called upon to face & confront one’s worst fears and deepest shadows.

I’m no stranger to shadow work and healing, a process I started years ago before it was en vogue; part of me gets irritated with the flooded market of “shadow” this and that, but I do have to say, another part of me appreciates the darkness getting its due finally. This deck is the first I’ve seen to directly address the dark archetypes that each tarot card has within them, and it’s quite refreshing! The imagery on these cards is built on simple lines and lots of dark space, which for folks like myself, is favored, and what I’m guessing is that “Night Vision” part of this deck.  As for divination, this deck does not read as an everyday type of deck; instead, its specialty is just what the title says, and it will always show the dark side of a situation. While this can be helpful to be aware, a “normal” tarot deck can do this, without the need for drudging up the shadows.

Aside from shadow work uses, this deck can also be used to work with more malefic, or untamed forces for magick and mysticism, but I would advise against that for those new to the darker end of spirituality, for safety purposes. To be clear, this is not a deck for the faint of heart, and it will call you on your bullshit; but the growth that can come from this deck, especially when paired with sound shadow work methods and therapy, is unrivaled. While this deck may not be my first choice, I decided to review it having the experience with the darker side of spirituality and magick, and I was not disappointed. Overall, I have no complaints, as even the cardstock is sturdy and shuffles well when bridged. 5/5 Pentagrams!
