Bright Blessings,
The longer you do divination, the more people you will do readings for. Somewhere along the line, issues are going to pop up- unfortunately. Most people who ask for a reading appreciate your help. They might feel lost, and any insight you provide will be valued and used well. You may get people who come to you again and again, thankful they have found a trusted advisor who helps guide them. These are the people who you look forward to seeing.
They are the ones who you do this for. They are the people who you learn new divination skills for. They are the people you do classes, rituals, and meetups for. Some of them will learn a lot from you, and go on to become psychic advisors themselves. These are the people who will also go on to guide people who need help, teach, and basically build community in positive ways. If you are lucky, you might even become friends with them, and spend a lot of time together, making great memories.
There are a lot of people, even those who don’t become professionals who are the very reason you do all that you do. It’s not the money. Because let’s face it, almost nobody earns a living wage as a reader or as a professional in our communities. Most of us work our “day job” and do this on the side. Shops don’t always earn a lot of money either. My Priest had a shop for years, and racked up so much debt, he said opening that shop was one of his biggest regrets. Not because he did not fulfill his vows as a Priest and not because he did not love community- but because it was too costly.
So, what do you do when the problem clients come in? The pain in the ass people? The Karens of reading clients? Most specifically, what do you do when your reading client wants to fucking argue with you when you are trying to help them by giving them a reading – which they asked for by the way? “Oh, that will NEVER happen to me, because I am SUCH a great reader!” Cute. If you think that, maybe you give almost no readings or have not been a reader for long enough. If you read often enough and get enough clients, it is going to happen one day, and the question is, what will you do about it?
I’ve seen it happen to readers, and of course, I kept my ,mouth shut. The first man I saw it happen to kept full control of himself the whole time. The client started saying “No, that’s not the way it is”, and the reader had a very serious look on his face, opened his eyes wide, and very slowly nodded up and down until the client stopped arguing. Then he finished. The client said they did not like what he was telling them. Know what he said? The client was moving over 1,000 miles away to be with a new lover- and the psychic told the client that relationship was not going to work out. I knew that reader to be very accurate in readings. Nothing he ever said, to my knowledge, as off. So, I feel bad for the client, but they cannot say they were not warned.
I’ve had two people start arguing with me in about 20 years. One asked about a specific issue, I answered what the solution would be. He said he gives readings and did not like my answer. I tried to explain it differently, and he was really mad- and then shut down, going completely silent, and starting to cry. I told him I was sorry he was unhappy, but I was telling the truth. Then he took an attitude- and anybody who knows me is fully aware of how a thing like that goes. He was informed it is my job to tell the truth, not blow smoke up his ass- yes I used those words- and he was going to find another reader. Since it was less than halfway through the reading and $15 was not enough money for me to stay in the room any longer, he got a refund and a trip out the door.
Recently, someone expected me to tell them there were “forces of chaos” in their life preventing them from doing anything they wanted. My psychic instincts immediately indicated that was not so. I tried about three times to explain that I could see was not what was happening, and each time, they insisted more passionately that I tell them that was so- to the point they were shaking like a leaf. It was less than 5 minutes into the reading- it was not worth my time and they were not going to get their money’s worth because they immediately decided they had all the answers and I did not know what I was talking about. Refund.
I don’t play these games with people.
I read to help people, not for money- but I do not give free readings because years ago that was seriously taken advantage of. So, money shows how serious somebody is about taking some of my time, but money is not the goal. The goal is to use my abilities as a psychic to guide someone. My gifts are not for entertainment, not to enable somebody’s illusions, and not to line my pocketbook. They are sacred and I respect them and appreciate being entrusted by the powers that be with such abilities.
Not everybody who comes for a reading sees it that way. They see it as something they are entitled to because they put money in your hand. They see it as “you work for me.” Actually, I don’t have to, so if you start shit during a sacred session, you show me you are not interested in learning, growing, or being supported, and you have a flesh bound desire to be spoiled, entertained, or to have bullshit validated- bye.
You have to decide for yourself as a reader how you feel about that. Will you tough it out, trying to redirect an outright argument, and please somebody or will you say, “We are not doing this,”? As an experienced reader, I recommend you do not entertain arguments. If you want to try and redirect things initially, I understand. Sometimes, clients are upset, scared, or just having a bad day, and you can get them back on track. If they are hellbent on arguing with you, don’t feel obligated to keep going with the reading. It really isn’t what you are called to do.
It is a holy calling to use your psychic abilities to help people. Not everybody appreciates that, or anything holy at all. The Christians have a scripture that I always go back to. Matthew 7:6 says “ Do not give what is holy to the dogs: nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” Do not give holy things to those who do not appreciate them- or they will spit on the sacred and attack you. You cannot teach them to be better in a 15-30 minute tarot reading. If you want to teach them, I recommend you kick them out and let them learn if they want something from you, they will behave respectfully.
Blessed Be.
Lady Saoirse is a practicing witch, and initiated Wiccan of an Eclectic Tradition.
A recovered Catholic, she was raised to believe in heaven and hell, that there is only one god, and only one way to believe. As she approached her late 20’s, little things started to show her this was all wrong. She was most inspired by the saying “God is too big to fit into one religion” and after a heated exchange with the then associate pastor of the last Xtian church she attended, she finally realized she was in no way Xtian, and decided to move on to see where she could find her spiritual home.
Her homecoming to her Path was after many years of being called to The Old Ways and the Goddess, and happened in Phoenix, Arizona. She really did rise from her own ashes!
Upon returning to Ohio, she thought Chaos Magic was the answer, and soon discovered it was actually Wicca. She was blessed with a marvelous mentor, Lord Shadow, and started a Magical Discussion Group at local Metaphysical Shop Fly by Night. The group was later dubbed A Gathering of Paths. For a few years, this group met, discussed, did rituals, fellowship, and volunteering together, and even marched as a Pagan group with members of other groups at the local gay Pride Parade for eight years.
All the while, she continued studying with her mentor, Lord Shadow, and she became a Third Degree High Priestess in 2022 and is a Priestess of the Temple of the Goddess. She belongs to the Black Dragon Clan. She does readings, Sabbats, and classes in her hometown in Ohio. She has been with PaganPages.org since 2016 and writes for Green Egg, SpiritualBlossom, and Mysticsense.
