Agrimony

Agrimony (“Agrimonia eupatoria”) is also known as Church Steeples, cocklebur, stickwort, sticklewort.  Agrimony is a perennial.  The leaves grow from a tough root and it usually grows in a tall column of flowers, which is where it got its name “Church Steeples”.  It is soft to the touch but not tasty so it does not belong in the kitchen.

Agrimony is known for helping with sleep.  If you struggle to sleep at night, you can make a dream bag with agrimony and mugwort in it to promote sleep and dreams.  Ancient lore says not to sleep with Agrimony under the pillow because it will make the person sleep so soundly that it would be almost like they were dead and could not awake until it was removed.

Agrimony is also used for protection spells.  It can be placed in magickal bags to protect the keeper of t he bag.  It is also known to protect again negative magick, energies, goblins and poison.   Agrimony also was used to detect witches at one time.

Agrimony can be used as a “counter-magick” herb.  In other words, it can be used to remove hexes, jinxes and curses.  What’s unique about Agrimony is that not only does it break the hexes, jinxes or curses but it sends it back to the person who placed the spell in the first place.  Used with Slippery Elm Bark, it can break spells involving slander and lies and people who are trying to harm your love life.  Also, if it is combined with Rue, it can remove the Evil Eye, even after it has been cast.
For Remedial uses, it can be used to help heal a cough (but flavor it with honey to make it palatable).   It can also be used a gargle for a sore throat and taken internally to help heal the liver and cases of jaundice.  It’s important when using any herbs to consult with a herbalist and/or doctor to make sur e it’s safe for you.
