What Your Pagan Teacher Wants you to Know…About Practice

(Leather Bound, Pentacle Journal by Samantha & Jason of Earthwork’s Journals, Home of the Handmade Journal on Etsy.)   My mum was a music teacher. A strict one at that. She had this way of showing her immense disapproval with a slight tut and a look away. You ask any music teacher, any teacher at all really if they know that their student has been practicing or not, and they can tell a mile away. “And you practiced every day?” Maybe that’s where I get it from. I’m a pretty good student. I take anything I study seriously (I make Hermione Granger look like a slacker) and I love to…

    The Bad Witch’s Guide

The Bad Witch Reviews The Witch’s Spellbook Enchantments, Incantations, and Rituals from Around the World By Sarah Bartlett I feel like I should begin by saying while this is a review, and I did read a book I feel reluctant to say the name of it. Suffice to say it is a spell book. I feel like I would be much freer to comment without putting the name of this writer or the book title in this review. The introduction starts with a story about how this person came to magick. They found a book (it happens to many) but what struck me was the kind of spell she…

    The Naked Goddess II

(Celtic Gods: The Morrigan by Alexandra Rena of AlexandraRena Fine Art Prints & Gifts on etsy.)   I just read a very interesting article by John Beckett. In it he speaks at his unnamed discomfort at the “sexualisation” of Goddess imagery, specifically of the Morrigan. The word he was groping for but missing was objectification. Of course this is not a new thing (I spoke before at this Greek innovation of lessening women and Goddess power). Early Christian and Jewish priests had some very odd ideas about the worship of objects (animism) and linked it to avarice and greed. Love of possessions was seen as “worship” of things. I’m sure…

    The Bad Witch’s Guide

The Bad Witch’s Guide to Imbolc I am a bad witch. There are a long list of reasons why I am a bad witch. Having been out of the broom closet for some considerable number of years I would on occasion get asked “but you’re a good witch though?” My response to that depending on the person asking but I found I started to say “yes, a very, very good witch” rather darkly as it usually got the point across… January was called Wolf month in Anglo-Saxon. Where the starving creatures ventured into villages snapping at the young and helpless, just like the bitter winter winds. January stalks through…

What Your Pagan Teacher Wants you to Know…About Spiritual Learning

When I was at my hungriest for a teacher one did not magically appear with the answers I wanted to know. Well not in the way I expected. In hindsight I had many teachers. I was passionate, curious and worked hard to understand. I picked up two practices from two different authors that served me very well. One was to question. “The right question is a key.” The other said “do the work, the rest will come, have faith.” Through my work with spirit in my teens I had already been in a teaching position and I seemed to gather students, or at least people who wanted me to teach…

The Bad Witch’s Guide to Poppets   I am a bad witch. There are a long list of reasons why I am a bad witch. Having been out of the broom closet for some considerable number of years I would on occasion get asked “but you’re a good witch though?” My response to that depending on the person asking but I found I started to say “yes, a very, very good witch” rather darkly as it usually got the point across. As someone who has only relatively recently learned to sew I had to get crafty with poppets. I am quite cool about substitutes like onions and lemons (as…

The Bad Witch’s Guide to Yule

The Bad Witch’s Guide to Yule I’m always a bad witch, but apparently I really suck at this Yuletide thing. I mean I make my own gifts! I like snow! When people say “season’s greetings” or “Merry Christmas” I smile and mean it! I’m a monster! The cynical average British Pagan just sort of rolls their eyes at me. I don’t Cringle early. I spend November and December making gifts and decorations (I’m a bit slow this year but we have been adjusting to new medication this year, but I have plans)! I don’t even go and get really drunk! I mean I clearly suck at this witching thing!…

What your Pagan Teacher wants you to know … About Meditation

What your Pagan Teacher wants you to know …     About Meditation Meditation is a weird thing. It is seen as this perfect thing that a few people can actually do. In reality even after 30 years of meditation there are days I struggle. Not because I’m bad at it but because life happens! Much like falling asleep (a different kind of brain activity) there are layers and stages to meditation. I am sure they have proper names and titles somewhere. This is how I experience them, still. Brain Radio. Brain radio is the weird ambient noises inside my brain often a mix of 80’s cartoons, toy advert jingles,…

You’d think spending my childhood on the farm would have ruined it but I think it made things like…

    The Bad Witch’s Guide

Bad Witch’s Guide to Pinterest   I am a bad witch. It might surprise you to find out I like Pinterest. However my major problem with it is the “magick” and spellcraft on there is often utter twaddle. I…
