A Shamanic View
Surviving Chaos The past couple of months have been rather chaotic. My family and I moved from a house in Illinois to an apartment in Colorado. I’m relocating my shamanic practice and my wife and I are opening a shop together. The move was complicated and while boxes were designated as shop versus apartment, several ended up in the wrong place. There are still a number of things we haven’t found. It would be easy to go on and on about the things that are contributing to the chaos in our lives, but I think everyone can relate well enough. Aren’t most of us surrounded by more than our share…

WiseWoman Traditions
Wise Woman Ways to Boost Your Energy Almost every woman has, at one time or another, felt so fatigued she wanted to cry. But for some women, and for a variety of reasons — including menopause, caring for a new-born, working odd hours, chronic anxiety, and poverty, to name only a few — fatigue is a constant, not an occasional, problem. Stimulants don’t really give us more energy, though they are what many women turn to when they feel too tired. Stimulants create false energy, leaving us more exhausted at deeper levels. One more cup of coffee, one more soft drink, one more jolt of fear increases energy, to…

Tarot Talk
This month, we will move into the Major Arcana, and talk about The Fool. So far, we’ve been talking about Minor Arcana cards, and since this is the first Major we are looking at, before we begin breaking down The Fool, let’s define and describe some terms. There are 22 Major Arcana cards in a Tarot deck, with numbers from 0 to 21; the Majors usually deal with broader and more far-reaching life experience issues, archetypes that are easy for us to identify with and connect with at some point in our lives. An archetype (pronounced “ark eh type”) is a generic, idealized model of a person, an…

Goddesses of Sorcery
The Moon Goddess “Once it be in a month, and better when the moon is full…”(1) By Meri Fowler HPS The other day I on Facebook I was sorry to see a definition of Paganism as “people who worship the moon”. The moon is, as far as I know, a piece of rock that orbits the earth, although some people think it might be made of cheese! We don’t worship it, we worship God. I had an argument with a doctor of theology who said that Pagans worship the forces of nature personified by deities that were invented by ancient people. He said they made up these deities to explain…

Warrior Women
Annie Oakley. Now, that’s a name one would not associate with strength of character and determination. She was a strong woman, a warrior woman, who made a name for herself in the competitive arena of sharpshooting. A man’s world. Phoebe Ann Moses (her stage name, Annie Oakley, was to come later) was born into a Quaker family in 1860. Her childhood was one of deprivation and sadness. Her father died when she was just six years old; her step-father died a few short years later, soon after marrying her mother. A third marriage did nothing to alleviate the grinding poverty in which the family lived. Phoebe Ann’s mother,…

Jade Owl’s Kitchen
Photo used with permission. twopagans.com Blessed Samhain! This is hands down, no doubt about it my favorite time of year. It is the time of year of new beginnings, so I use this time to clean out all the old and make room for the new. I will clean out my herb cabinet and return the old herb to the earth via compost. If I feel the need for a new besom, I will either make one or purchase it. And instead of waiting for January to make new resolutions I will state mine at the end of my Samhain ritual. (And of course some of them will…

The Mugwort Chronicles
Cultivating Patience & Boundaries in the Garden This is a bittersweet time in the herb garden as the days grow shorter and temperatures are beginning to cool. The plants which have been attentively nurtured since early spring are now sporting an overgrown and somewhat rangy appearance. Many are yellowing, setting seed, and turning their growth inward to their roots to prepare for the winter respite. This has been a very prolific gardening season for me, re-introducing my herbal plant friends back into their newly expanded garden bed. Two years ago, my husband surprised me with his plan to double the size of my herb garden. Although his intentions were wonderful,…
