    Musings From the Mossy Trail

Blessed Disting For those who follow a Celtic pagan path February 2nd brings Imbolc to celebrate the Goddesses transformation from crone to maiden; the change from dark to light. During this time we honor the beloved Brigid, goddess of healing and medicine, poetry, divination, fire (the forge and the hearth), knowledge and inspiration. She is daughter of Dagda, the great “father god” of Ireland and one of the oldest Goddesses still worshiped today. Also coinciding on this same day is the Scandinavian celebration called Disting, a holy day largely characterized by preparing the land for planting and the blessing of objects and tools. In Nordic mythology, within Vanaheim, home of the…

    MoonOwl Observations

Gerald Gardner I’m sure a few people have heard of Gardnerian Wicca or Garderian tradition, etc., but not many know about the man himself. So, I will shed some light and share some information on the “father of modern witchcraft.” Gerald Brosseau Gardner was born June 13th 1884 in Blundellands, England. He had two brothers and lived with his nanny most of the time growing up due to his asthma. Gardner claimed to be a hereditary witch, saying he was a descendant of  Grissell Gairdner. She was burned as a witch in 1610. He initially made his living as a customs officer, but retired in 1936. He married his wife…

    Pagan Theology

Getting out of the stores I am no historian of religions but I have to think that ours is the first that is mainly built up around stores.   It is somehow humorously incongruous, a religion, something that is traditionally divorced from the material world, that meets in, organizes around, and has the main part of its public identity bound up in stores.  I suspect that this is also a uniquely American way of managing our religion.  An easy analysis would say that its our pervasive materialism simply expressing itself in religious terms.  If megachurches can have Starbucks and gift shops then we may indeed be at the cutting edge of…

Functions of the Psyche in Magick

I have been in the in occult long enough to see some twisted folks and very gullible people thirsting for knowledge; there are a few misunderstandings that go in the realm of the occult Seeker. The occult is primarily in the usage of symbolism, one clear example is in the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. The word “Ateh” is used to mean “thou art” when the real meaning is derived to a beautiful woman in Islam or Princess Ateh in some middle eastern traditions as the original source; The meaning was changed to suit the grounding for the Kabbalistic Cross. Though the meanings are different, all that matters is…

It’s time for everyone to sit back in their desk and pretend to pay attention to the annoying and embarrassing grainy public service announcement that the teacher is about to play- but hey it’s better than algebra right? Ok so it’s not that bad, but we here at Thrifting the Witchy Way take our Spiritual Hygiene very seriously. While we’re out there hunting for those special pieces we need to remember that we can bring home more than just a bargain. Just by living we imprint ourselves and our spiritual energy on our belongings every day.  This is not a bad thing, and many items you find out there will…

Red Pixie’s – Elements of a Magical Life

Is Mediatation just another Form of Manifestation? Almost everyone wants to be successful. And whilst the focus of success varies from one person to the next it is a basic philosophy that hard work and focus are the key to success. But very recently people have discovered a thing called manifestation meditation, a meditative process of making our goals materialize through a shifting of thought patterns. Manifestation meditation is when you direct your thoughts towards what you want to achieve in life so that it becomes intimately aware of what you desire from life. This is very different from when you have so many random thoughts that your brain gets…
