A Year of Living Mindfully
by Joey Hulin
Publisher: Laurence King Publishing
Publishing Date: October 19, 2021
This book comes to you from a generation quite jaded by planners, journals, and almanacs. It has obliterated this impossibly high bar. Joey Hulin, who is just an amazing human being, has clearly mastered being a human.
She breaks down each month, and she gives you EVERYTHING. A meaningful fable, journaling exercises, recipes, rituals, planetary aspects, yoga positions, aspirations, meditation, and more! An example:
Ritual for November:
Rites of passage are central to a number of cultural,
spiritual and religious practices, and they often carry deep
They are frequently practised as initiations that
honour the cycle and stages of life: birth, the transition
from childhood to adolescence, that from adolescence to
adulthood and, finally, the last stage in the cycle – death.
Destruction and cessation are honoured within the
philosophy of a rite of passage, as happenings that create
space and fertile ground for new life to emerge.
Ho’oponopono is a Hawaiian forgiveness ritual and
translates as ‘put to right’ or ‘correction’. The ritual itself
is usually carried out in family or community gatherings,
and begins with prayers before an individual’s problem or
confession is clearly laid out. The collective work through
the problem as if it were their own; there is no separation
between the individual and the collective. Quiet reflection
and discussions take place, then everyone lets go together,
using the following mantra:
‘I’m sorry. Please forgive me.
Thank you. I love you.’
I’m sorry represents a connection to feeling, your higher self,
and relieves you of guilt and shame.
Please forgive me represents forgiveness for forgetting your
connectedness to others.
I love you – ‘namaste’ – is a greeting to indicate that the light
in me honours the light in you, and to show willingness to
honour the situation and challenge you face.
Thank you represents a hopeful perspective, a welcoming of
what is yet to be received. Through the power of forgiveness
the energetic attachments to past or ego are released.
As seen above, she dives deep into every piece of this almanac with such fervor. Each story, each posture, every exercise designed to wake you up to life, inviting you to be fully here in this moment. Books like this usually have varying appeal to different audiences based on their spiritual path and skill level, but this book serves as a compass, guiding the beginner and the adept, the religious as well as the mindful will get a full fruit basket out of this one.
The book is so deeply layered, you could make a goal to completely do all the things in the book, and let that act as your guide to building your own recipes and rituals for mindful living.
I can’t get enough of this book. And on top of it’s super helpful nature, the book is aesthetically ADORABLE. It gives you the feeling that you’re reading something very old, like an almanac should. This book feels like it was written by someone very old and very wise. It seems like knowledge passed down from the elders, and it very much is I’m sure. Every person who lives any kind of life should get this book, it’s truly a treasure.
This book gets so deep into the webbings of your mind, every piece of your life can be transformed. You can use this book to incorporate discipline in your life, or to incorporate ritual. Or simply to learn how to wake up and smell the roses. This book almost tricks you into being supremely mindful, and it is time for you to incorporate this into your already existing daily practice. Then you will surely be on the path to mastery!
I give this book 5/5, it should be on every bookshelf moving into the new millennium.
