Equinox of the Heart

March winds come before

April showers

May flowers

Cleaning the earth

Blowing away

Winter’s chilling dust

Remnants of rot

Leaf piles dead

Slushy, slimy heaps of

Seasonal trash

Yet busting out with life

Wood lice, slugs, snails, early caterpillars

Then birds that come to feast

Blackbirds, robins, and now the mistle thrush

Pecking industriously

Through a compost carnival

Early spring’s banquet

Against a backdrop of

Cautious blossom.

My heart, my heart blooms like the

Snowdrop the

Crocus the

Narcissus

Waiting to be plucked

To plunge me down into the Earth

To meet the end of one great thing

And the start of another

As the wheel creaks round

Stiff and cold

Frostbitten

Yet moving, always moving

But here we pause.

The equinox.

The point of balance.

Halfway twixt Solstices

Where light and dark

Shake hands

Call it a draw

And embrace something

As close to balance

As we ever see.

My heart, my aching heart

Yearns to feel it

To surround itself in black and white

And day and night

And joy and fright

And now it might

In the sun’s first tentative rays

The splashes of green by the way

The thunderous call of the splitting sky

Clouds banished while gulls cry

It might indeed

Might sit in that grey, cool point

Of balance.

The thrush sings

Tips my scales

My heart bursts

The dam broken, gushing

But that’s okay

Spring is here

And summer? On the way.
