The Westwood Tarot is your traditional 78 card Tarot deck, but is filled with colorful, vibrant and whimsical illustrations for each card. Instead of people gracing the card images, animals do, deepening their meaning and wisdom in readings. I have long been open to use of animal symbolism, omens and the like in divination, having practiced augury for some time now. To combine the wisdom of the animal and plant world with the style of divination and wisdom of the Tarot is something I’ve not seen so completely done in a deck thus far, until I got my hands on The Westwood Tarot.

I chose this deck out of curiosity, as it’s not typically a style of Tarot I would purchase, but I’ve found over time doing reviews that those are the hidden gems you never knew you needed. This deck is no different, offering me a different perspective in my readings, and making it almost more relatable, each image more intuitive. The guidebook has so many meanings and interpretations for different areas of life, including finances, love and other most commonly asked questions in readings. The beautiful illustration and vibrant use of color and unique use of shading makes this deck stand out, not lest the attractive backing of the deck, coupled with the gold gilding of the cards themselves.

The guidebook, apart from having meanings for various areas of life, and general interpretations, also lists an explanation of the image of each card. The guidebook and deck of The Westwood Tarot will help new readers, or even someone who’s reading Tarot for the first time, get an easy grasp on reading the cards both with “by-the-book” meanings, as well as enhancing intuitive reading abilities. The meanings given in the guidebook do not differ much, if at all, from standard RWS meanings, making this an excellent deck for beginners, even though it is not marketed as a beginner kit.

Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading with this deck, and I find the animal and nature imagery calming, assuring, positive and intriguing. The animal guides within have guided me to deeper, mystical meanings in my readings that other decks don’t seem to add. I have no critiques of The Westwood Tarot, and I give it a 5/5. It’s a lovely deck, and easy to read; it’s really the perfect deck for beginners and advanced Tarot readers alike!
