Tarot with Lady Saoirse-Divination Without Tools?

Bright Blessings,

I know this is Tarot column, but not everybody who does readings uses cards.  There are pendulums, Ouija boards, automatic writing, Runes, scrying mirrors, and all sorts of things used in divination. Some people don’t use any tools at all, as a matter of fact. I would never have believed that was possible unless I had seen it.

Now, I read energy in my readings. I ask people to open themselves and let me use some of their energy to read for them. A lot of people are very good at doing that for me and readings are easy for me because of that. The cards and runes and trinkets I use in readings serve as a visual guide that helps illustrate the messages I get in readings. I have multiple decks and let people choose which I will use in their reading. The images help to get the point across, but I don’t always need them.

The way I saw a reading without tools was done by a dear friend, who was also a priestess, Dendera. I did not even know we would get readings that night, but we did. The way she did it was to darken the room and sit in silence for a few minutes. I’m not sure what she thought about, but she went deep into a trance and even her voice changed. Then, we each got turns asking questions, and she answered. But it was not Dendera answering. It was a goddess.

Dendera crossed the veil several years ago, and I never asked her which goddess it was, but I felt the presence of that goddess very powerfully that night. I wept uncontrollably because SHE was present. Dendera acted as a vessel the goddess used to touch the lives of her children. It was not only lifechanging to be in the very presence of that goddess, but it changed me as a reader.

I decided I wanted to be able to read without tools as well. Why? Not to increase accuracy. Not to impress people, but because sometimes you don’t have your tools and I did not want to use tools as a crutch. I wanted to be able to use my psychic abilities anytime and anyplace and not rely on objects to help me. Something to remember about doing divination is that tools are just tools, especially Tarot cards.

If you use the traditional tarot meanings- there are multiple things that each card could mean. I have heard people say ‘Well, to decide what the card means, look at the other cards around it.” No, you don’t. here is no ascribed meaning a card talks just because a specific card is next to it. If you can’t tell, the cards are not speaking to you.

The exact arrangement of cards can be used in countless readings for countless people and I promise you, the message will be different each and every time. Your intuition should be guiding you. Psychic readings are not by the book. They go by your psychic abilities. If you’re consulting some kind of a guidebook each time you give a reading, you’re not learning. You’re reading a book to give you the answers. Let the cards answer, or find a different divination tool.

All of us have psychic abilities. Tarot cards, pendulums, Runes, or any other form of divination tool is just that- a tool. Everybody can do something on the psychic level, but not everybody can do divination. So, be honest with yourself. If you’re trying to give readings, and there is zero accuracy, no matter what you do, you can’t give psychic readings. If you’re new, give yourself a chance to maneuver through mistakes, but if a decade has gone by and you still can’t do it- you can’t do it. Your psychic gifts lie elsewhere, and that’s ok.

With cards, or any other divination tool, give yourself the opportunity to learn to give a divination reading with no tools. Don’t be nervous, just have faith. The ability to do divination does not come from cards or anything else. It comes deep within us. Experiment with different tools, and give readings with no tools. Don’t limit yourself.

Blessed Be.

About the Author- Lady Saoirse is a practicing witch, and an initiated Wiccan of an Eclectic Tradition.

A recovered Catholic, she was raised to believe in heaven and hell, that there is only one god, and only one way to believe. As she approached her late 20’s, little things started to show her this was all wrong. She was most inspired by the saying “God is too big to fit into one religion” and after a heated exchange with the then associate pastor of the last Xtian church she attended, she finally realized she was in no way Xtian, and decided to move on to see where she could find her spiritual home.

Her homecoming to her Path was after many years of being called to The Old Ways and the Goddess, and happened in Phoenix, Arizona. She really did rise from her own ashes!

Upon returning to Ohio, she thought Chaos Magic was the answer, and soon discovered it was actually Wicca. She was blessed with a marvelous mentor, Lord Shadow, and started a Magical Discussion Group at local Metaphysical Shop Fly by Night. The group was later dubbed A Gathering of Paths. For a few years, this group met, discussed, did rituals, fellowship, and volunteering together, and even marched as a Pagan group with members of other groups at the local gay Pride Parade for eight years.

All the while, she continued studying with her mentor, Lord Shadow, and she became a Third Degree High Priestess in 2022 and is a Priestess of the Temple of the Goddess. She belongs to the Black Dragon Clan. She is a member of the spiritual family at the Magical Druid in Clintonville, Ohio. She has been with PaganPages.org since 2016 and writes for Green Egg, SpiritualBlossom, and Mysticsense.
