A World Re-Enchanted February 2025

“It is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen.”

  1. R. R. Tolkien

The elemental focus for this month based on the Elven lore of Arda is Water.  As the above quote shows for the Elves of Arda water is a powerful force holding extensive wisdom and knowledge from the past. The Teleri or coastal Elves are most deeply connected to the ocean primarily and ultimately all forms of water.

The concept of water having memory and knowledge is not confined just to Tolkien’s realm alone. In the human world Dr. Masaru Emoto did some amazing research on water and his research has sparked a lot of debate among those who consider it credible.

The Dwarves, Humans, Hobbits and other races while they utilize and enjoy water do not seem to have the same spiritual connection to water exhibited by the Elves.

Even one of the three rings of power forged by Celebrimbor in the second age focuses primarily on water. The ring is called Nenya also known as the White Ring, Ring of Adamant and Ring of Water. Nenya possessed the powers of preservation and concealment from evil.

Water is an element of cleansing, purification and when used correctly is one of the elements that helps bring life to everything on Arda. In the mundane sense of things water keeps us hydrated and alive. In the magical sense besides being used for cleansing and purification it can be used as a gateway to the spirit world. Water collected during a storm can be used to make War Water for attacking your enemies. You can set your intentions into water and use it in spells.

Full Moon of February – Isilnénimë

Isilnénimë is the Moon of the Waters

This full moon is a perfect time to connect with water for the month of February. It is a time to honor Ulmo and Uinen the Valar and Maiar of the month. There are many activities that we can do during this full moon.

Moonlit gatherings by a sacred lake, a river, the sea or a pond.

Water Rites and Blessings which fit the theme of purification.

Carry on the night of the full moon a silver lantern that could be used to honor departed loved ones or to send wishes into the world.

Songs and Poetry of the Sea and Sky

Crafting Moonlit Jewelry using pearls, sea glass, shells or other such materials and including symbols of water and the moon.

Guided meditations taking the white ships of the Teleri out onto the water under the full moons glow to connect with the water and the majesty of Isilnénimë.

Ritual dance under the moon as a way of celebration of the moon, water and expressing a deeper overall unity with nature.

Valar of February is Ulmo

Ulmo loves both Elves and Men, and never abandoned them, not even when they lay under the wrath of the Valar.

The Silmarillion, “Valaquenta: Of the Valar”

Ulmo is known by other names such as King of the Sea, Lord of Waters and Dweller of the Deep. He is one of the third strongest Valar after Manwe and Varda.

Ulmo is the friendliest of the Valar to the Children of Eru. He also tends do things different than the rest of the Valar, such as rarely attending council meetings and choosing to not live in Valinor with the rest of the Valar instead preferring to stay in the deep oceans. Ulmo by making this choice also tended to know more about what was going on with the Elves specifically having talked to them more and with the rest of Arda as a whole. He and Nienna are the only two of the Valar who have chosen to remain single while the others are all couples.

Ulmo is the most instructed in music and understood the music of the Music of the Ainur better than the others. Ulmo and Manwe were close allies and together they most faithfully served Eu and the vision and purpose of his plans.

While Ulmo is known as Lord of Waters and has control over all of the oceans, rivers, lakes. He does not do this work alone and has many spirits who work under him. One such Maia is known as Uinen or Lady of the Seas.

While Uinen is known to all the Elves of Arda she is most loved by the Teleri and is a friend to them and a bringer of calm seas.

For those looking to connect with Ulmo or Uinen below will be a couple of incantations starting with one for Ulmo. These incantations can be done solo or with a group.

Whisper of the Tides

Ulmo, Lord of the Deep, hear my/our calling,
From foam and flowing streams, I/we seek your voice.
Where water weaves through stone and sky,
Let your will be known, let your song be sung.

Bearer of echoes from forgotten shores,
Keeper of wisdom lost in shifting waves,
I/We stand beneath the open heavens,
Heart unbarred, hands unshaken.

From silver rain to midnight seas,
From trembling brook to thunderous fall,
I/We open my/our spirit to your whisper,
That I/we may know the course unseen.

Ulmo, who lingers where none may dwell,
Whose thought moves silent beneath the tides,
Let the waters speak, let the rivers remember,
Let the voice of the sea be my/our guide.

Incantation to Uinen, Lady of the Sea

Uinen, She who weaves the waters,
Veil of the deep, bearer of calm,
Your tresses stream where moonlight lingers,
Your voice is the hush before the storm.

To you, I/we offer breath and silence,
To you, I/we open heart unbound.
Let your hands smooth the troubled tide,
Let your grace guide the wandering sail.

From the shadowed abyss to the silver foam,
From the stillness to the breaking wave,
Hold me/us, hear me/us, hallow the way,
That I/we may know the music of the sea.
