SpellCrafting: Cord Cutting With a Candle
There are multiple ways of doing a cord cutting. This one uses two candles and a looped cord. The ritual energetically cuts ties with something – be it a person, a place, a habit, etc. Unlike a binding and some other forms of magick, this will not create a bond with what you cut from your life.
If possible, do this work on a dark moon, or when it is waning, for an added boost.
Choose a candle to represent yourself and one to represent what you wish to cut loose. White for you and black for the other person or thing are probably the most commonly used, but the color of a candle can add some energy to the spell. Carve your name into your candle, and what you are cutting away on the other. Sigils, runes, and other symbols can also be used.
If you wish to dress the candle with essential oils, vinegar, black salt, cayenne pepper, etc. now would be the time. Since this is something you wish to be rid of, hold that candle pointing away from you and, starting at the base, move your fingers up to the wick to spread the oil or herbs. If you are drawing something in, such as protection for yourself, begin at the wick and slide your fingers towards you.
Place the candles on a fire-safe surface about four inches apart.
If you wish, add other elements. I put salt and rosemary between the two candles. Around my candle I sprinkled a personal blend of herbs and added extra lavender. Around the other candle I was moved to put wormwood and mullein.
Some instructions call for tying one end of the string to one candle and the other end to the other candle, leaving a little slack. I chose to tie my string in a loop.
Focus on your intentions as you light each candle. While they burn, review why you chose to sever this connection, and feel the joy of being free of this bond.
When the flame burns the cord and it drops, the separation is complete. When the candles have finished burning, the spell is complete. Some practitioners will divine the meaning of such details as how the flames behave, how the cord burns, and how the wax melts.
Before you consider doing this spell, review your reasoning, do your research, and protect yourself. I am believing this spell will work when others have only held this specific toxicity at bay for several months at a time. If necessary, I will likely follow up with a banishment and another thorough cleansing.
