Weyland’s Whey, February 10th,2025 Storm Moon, Snake and Familiar Column
Full Moon in Leo
Upcoming Wednesday February 12th is the Storm Moon, so called by North American Algonquian tribes due to the heavy snows and violent weather that often accompany it. This full moon will be in Leo, which signals possible surprises and the unexpected. (I’m spending a lot of time hiding under the couch so far this year. Sheesh!) I’ll tell you how everything works out next month!
For Your Deliberation
When is a new pet too young to start training as her owner’s familiar? In our latest Roundtable discussion, Townies Hershey and Crystal weigh in.
Wey: Okay, the only way this conversation is going to make any sense is if we all take for granted that it’s possible to communicate with a cat. How big of a suspension of disbelief is that for you guys?
Crystal: Like hearing voices?
Wey: More like sharing feelings. Or recognizing them as coming from the animal.
Crystal gives him a wary look: You think you can do that?
Wey: I’ve accidentally stepped on Tabitha’s tail a couple of times since we got her. I don’t need a Universal Translator to understand kitty profanity when I hear it.
Crystal’s still a little doubtful: I guess…
Hershey: So it’s just basic vibes and feelings. Not words or voices.
Wey: With Delinquent I can get more details, but no, I’m not hearing anything.
Crystal: I can’t believe I’m asking this, but is Tabitha old enough to talk?
Wey: I looked it up. She’s about ten weeks old now. If she was a human child she’d be around three years old. A kid that age is good for two or three word sentences. Enough to get an idea across.
Hershey: Yeah, but she’s not gonna be discussing philosophy with you any time soon.
Wey makes a face: Talk talks like those are prolly beyond me, let alone Tabitha. But I think we can agree that my little girl can potentially understand some words and very simple sentences. And she’s fully capable of showing emotions like anger, fear, and contentment through purrs and body language.
Crystal: Okaaay….
Wey: So if we take for granted that psychic and empathic communications are possible, and Tabitha already has the brainpower to string simple ideas together, she’s ready to start training.
Crystal: That’s a big if. Maybe two of them.
Wey: But theoretically possible.
Crystal: That’s the shakiest science I’ve heard this side of Dr. Who.
Hershey: I can kind of see it, though. Theoretically.
Wey: So we’re agreed, then!
Crystal looks suspicious: On what?
Wey: That the answer to our question about Tabitha being ready to start training as a familiar is a definite maybe!
Crystal: You should’ve been a used car salesman…
